I have just arrived in SVALBARD, Northern Norway. It's the northernmost inhabited place on earth, with more polar bears than residents. In the summer months, like right now, the sun brightens up the sky 24 hours a day, and in the wintertime, it's exactly the opposite.
I'm here a few days early before our Hurtigruten expedition sailing kicks off to Eastern Greenland and Iceland! Stay tuned for some fascinating stories about the people, culture, wildlife and nature from the Arctic over the coming 2 weeks!
Just curious, how many of you guys have actually heard of Svalbard before?

Are we going to ignore the fact that the dog literally said hello?
I was looking for this comment.
Yeah, what a smart doggo right there! There’s also a talking dog on youtube named key. Search it.
I know that dog from Neptune.
Like bruh doggy from Roblox coming to life.
Bruh the dog is like hello
America: Has gun for robberies
Svalbard: Has gun for polar bears
Mexico:Has gun for murders. xDDD
Brazil: Has gun for Corruption
Your Country: doesn't even have a single gun
So people in America are polar bears and Gunners are human
😞😭😭😉
@@100cents5 ma country is Sweden LoL
You should have talked about the Svalbard seed vault. It's literally the future of humanity.
Not the future, it is a backup if we screw up the future for us humans

Wow, 24 hours of daylight, and living with no clocks would be a mindblowing experience for sure.
Most of northern Scandinavia also get's 24hrs of daylight in the summer, it's both amazing and really annoying.
You get the same in mainland Norway aswell, in the northern parts.
Wait till winter with the polar night where it's pitch black 24 hours a day for atleast a month. You don't see actual sun from November-February, and during that time there is also the pitch black darkness for like a month as I said
@@adara4635 It's actually pitch-black for 2 months and a half, from November 12th to January 28th :)
The sun hides behind the mountain range at the beginning of October until it comes back on March 8th, so during most of October and February, there's some light at noon, but you do not see the sun itself. The very first days of February there's barely 1 or 2 hours of twilight, but it's enough to get a sense of joy and relief after almost 3 months of total darknesss :)
1:53 Did that huskie just say "Hello!"??
@Jim Elliott A reply 8 months after the comment, Lol
Oh yes he did
I’ve been to Iceland and Siberia before but never Svalbard, looks like a nice place. And when you go to Iceland, you have to go to the natural hot springs, it’s amazing!
i cant even travel to my own country how tou visit siberia what
@@Shhehwhsi24 same,I didn't even travel to another city in my whole life. :-(
Svalbard has been in the News all week (July, 2019) here in USA, on NPR (National Public Radio).
Estimates report that 200 reindeer were found dead- apparently from starvation. Some Polar Bear deaths, as well- they can't get to where the seals are.
The melting & disappearing sea ice is destroying their ability to reach food sources.
I heard ice cover as a whole increased.
That's climate change for you has been happening for all of time
The USA chats a lot of shit
Thaat's propaganda for you.
go watch Norwegian news to get the real picture. The Polar bear were dead because of tourism...so many stupid tourist like to not follow instruction to NOT go find a Polar bear and try to tease them, so they attacked the tourist and the guide had to kill the bear.
"The melting & disappearing sea ice is destroying their ability to reach food sources." Polar bears can swim towards food, you climate change muppet.
Drew: Svalbard is one of the safest places on Earth.
Also Drew: Just in case a polar bear attacks you, you may need to commit a felony to survive.
Well if it's allowed there, it's not a crime.
I guess it's one of the safest places on earth when it comes to violent, depraved human beings.
@þrúðr J Polar bears largely are left alone, most of the land is unhabited except a few coastal settlements like longyarbyen.
@@Amghannam It's not legal to kill a polar bear. Before you resort to that, you have to try and scare it off using flare guns and such, and if you do happen to shoot one, you'll probably pay a fine.
@@adara4635 Its not leagl to actively hunt polar bears, but if one charges you, you have all the right to shoot it without any reprecussion.
Drew: Imma travel the world as a job!
9-5 jobs: am I a joke to you?
They truly are a joke
yep they sre a joke there is virtually no work amd life ballance
9-5 jobs: realizes they really are a joke, always have been
Where the fuck do you work 9-5
I lived in that green building shown at the start of the video for several months while attending the newly opened folk high school on Svalbard. Svalbard is absolutely amazing and recommend everyone to go there some time in their life! :)

Hi
Was super excited to find this video. I've been fascinated with Svalbard for years. I think I saw you on a Mark Wiens video.
Have you ever been there? If not, you should go one day! It's such an enthralling, awe-inspiring place.

@@mddin20 I think you can live in Svalbard visa-free, so you can probably go there visa-free aswell. But I think the only way to get there by plane is fromOslo, and you need a visa for that I think.

If you don't like fish, don't go there.
@@onlythetruth4039 I don't like fish I'm allergic to seafood
yes, without visa, but not as easy as people might think, because there is barely any accomodation available so yeah you can go but you got no house to rent. You could possibly live in a camperized van though.
Learnt this in geography
You have to go back in February/March…watching this video it looks drastically different in the summer
Having been to nearly 80 countries now, it’s quite possibly the most beautiful/unique place I’ve ever been (maybe some perspective bias as I’m from the humid swamplands of Florida)
@ Drew ..thank you so much and your gf is so lucky! ❤🙏🇵🇭 a Filipina from.NY
Love to visit there

Alert in Canada is a military and scientific base a little bit more north then this island
So cool
Finallyyyyy
This was a fabulous video. How do you afford to travel like that? It's so expensive.
My dream place anyhow
Not all citizens can work in Svalbard, only those from countries that signed the Svalbard treaty
@Sam All citizens and all companies of every nation under the treaty are allowed to become residents and to have access to Svalbard including the right to fish, hunt or undertake any kind of maritime, industrial, mining or trade activity. The residents of Svalbard must follow Norwegian law, though Norwegian authority cannot discriminate against or favor any residents of any given nationality.
Then that place is fucked the more diverse it gets only thing keeping them from fighting each other is its too cold.
What about illegal immigration from here? After I mean if they are here why don't they cheat the system and go south?
@@jewberggoldstein7112 1. Mutual economical interests and basic human values keep them from butchering each other like in every other place of the earth.
2. You might live in Svalbard, but that does not mean that you are allowed to live in Norway or any other part of Europe
