I have just arrived in SVALBARD, Northern Norway. It's the northernmost inhabited place on earth, with more polar bears than residents. In the summer months, like right now, the sun brightens up the sky 24 hours a day, and in the wintertime, it's exactly the opposite.
I'm here a few days early before our Hurtigruten expedition sailing kicks off to Eastern Greenland and Iceland! Stay tuned for some fascinating stories about the people, culture, wildlife and nature from the Arctic over the coming 2 weeks!
Just curious, how many of you guys have actually heard of Svalbard before?

      @@adara4635 It's actually pitch-black for 2 months and a half, from November 12th to January 28th :)
The sun hides behind the mountain range at the beginning of October until it comes back on March 8th, so during most of October and February, there's some light at noon, but you do not see the sun itself. The very first days of February there's barely 1 or 2 hours of twilight, but it's enough to get a sense of joy and relief after almost 3 months of total darknesss :)

Svalbard has been in the News all week (July, 2019) here in USA, on NPR (National Public Radio).

1992 took ship from Tromso and returned after 2 weeks. I camped rough near the airport. You do get used to the 24 hours of daylight. Why fly, ships are much more interesting.

Not all citizens can work in Svalbard, only those from countries that signed the Svalbard treaty

@Sam All citizens and all companies of every nation under the treaty are allowed to become residents and to have access to Svalbard including the right to fish, hunt or undertake any kind of maritime, industrial, mining or trade activity.
