    I love when Nick says, "You look... it looks great." He almost said a little too much, but he caught himself. Also, Nick's bolting out the door after he realizes the hug has gone on much too long (yet not long enough). And comparing that to how he leaves after the "homework" scene in a later episode really shows how they've grown.

      Perfectly written script and Kit nails it. Alice's intentions for all these characters are so deeply embedded into the scripts and this is why it's so important to have the original creatives fully involved to honour the source material.

      @@JackieRossLavender I completely agree. Having Alice lead this entire process is a huge part of why this series works so well. She has a great director behind the camera, but it's always her vision that's coming through. The first kiss scene looks like it was lifted straight off the page.

      Im so late on this comment section but im just bunge watching every reaction video for heartstopper like crazy..
      On topic of how Alice being there to actually direct it.. a little detail was shared by Kit. Their scripts (individual) actually had some illustration drawn on them by Alice herself and it help him see what it would look like on the scene and gave him the idea how he can work with it. He also added that it was the first time he encountered that and it was really helpful and unique.

      @@JackieRossLavender this omg. it's so clear that this is the formula to a good adaptation and we saw it again with One Piece. when the original creator is heavily involved that's when the quality of the show stays in check, and screenwriters don't get to make stupid changes to the characters or plot without permission!!

    The one thing I’ve not seen anyone pick up in a reaction video is that, during Why Am I Like This?, when Nick zooms in on the picture, his right thumb slightly caresses the edge of his phone right near Charlie’s face. This is one of the small details that absolutely gets me emotional every single time (and is definitely relatable for me)

      What’s great about this award was it beat out “We Don’t Talk About Bruno” which was a real hit from Encanto. You know the song did something special, something right to have beaten a song from a Disney hit. The snow scene was magical and the song set every emotion, every thought precisely as it would be in real life. That’s why everyone melted when Nick’s present was the picture of that day. (SPOILER ALERT). That was the most romantic gift ever!!!

    I think my favourite thing about episode 2 is toward the end, after Nick hugs Charlie in the hallway, he doesn’t look back as he says goodbye. It shows Nick’s confusion about what his feelings are, and the fear of showing himself to Charlie in that moment. Good acting choices there

      And Nick's eyes widening when Charlie hugs him back, like "oh, oh crap, this is what I've been missing". At first I was kind of disappointed that he just took off afterwards, since he'd previously talked about his feelings so easily, especially with Charlie. But then he had to go and have himself a gay panic while falling down a google rabbit hole, and I remembered that he still doesn't understand his feelings fully or what they mean enough to even put into words. All that's really clicked into place so far is that he definitely wants to do more than hug Charlie.

      I honestly think or hope at least this have improved even in the last 10-20 years. I grew up in a extremely liberal area in just the 2000-2010 range. In middle school people were mostly accepting of queer people, but there was still enough homophobia and, that's so gay insults to mess with me. Hell I somehow picked up saying f*g and used it often in anger not even thinking about it when I was like 12, sad considering I'm queer. I knew of one openly gay kid in middle school, and he help organize a day of silence when it was fairly new. I took part and it was a key moment towards accepting myself I think looking back.

    At 3:13 - I noticed that about their beds. I think See-Saw Productions who made the show for Netflix spent so much time and effort into making sure the TV version was as close and faithful to the books as possible, to the point where Alice Oseman was on set for the majority of the scenes, and she changed bits when she felt needed to be changed, if the director Euros Lyn got it wrong.

    I felt moved by seeing you being moved. I teared up a bit honestly. About the music and soundtrack...like you, I'm heavily and deeply soul-touched by music. So this song by Orla Gartland just straight hit me in my core, specially because I tend to overthink every little word in conversations. These sorta weird feelings you get, I get them too. I still don't know why (I'm actually trying to figure them now in therapy), but it's sort of a mix of sadness, nostalgia, emptiness and hope, all at the same time? Something like it. Another song that I had on repeat for about 5 days straight was "Paper Mache World" from Matilda. This song brings me a feeling of pure loneliness with hope. Like, the hope that my person is out there somewhere and one day (hopefully before I'm 40) we'll find each other. 🤣
    About Isaac. I'm not really sure, BUT I think he might be asexual. Maybe asexual and aromantic. And if this is it, his story will be more explored in future seasons. Tori is amazing. I love her mood because most of the time mine is like hers and at other times I'm more like Darcy.

    Late to the party here:
    I along with everyone else was blown away by the soundtrack. It was one of the many things that it seems Alice had a good deal of control over. In interviews, there are mentions of Alice (maybe others as well?) having made a playlist and then sharing it with the cast for thoughts or input. I'm not sure how much of that actually made the final soundtrack, but it's no surprise Alice had a clear vibe for what she wanted the show to sound like. "I Want To Be With You" by chloe moriondo is the ending song for ep 4 and was explicitly played in Volume 4 (which was released in print during the filming of the show).

    I had the same feelings and thoughts watching this show, and listening to that song at the end in particular! I think this and 3rd episodes invoked a lot of buried emotions in me growing up as queer kid, and also as an adult. There is always fear of potential rejection from your family, friends, and social groups, on top of highly sexualised and exploitive perception of being non-hetero. I mean the reality is far from perfect (and so is anyone) but I am glad this show is providing us the hopeful picture of accepting the self and finding the importance of friendship and love. Nick is such an exemplary embodiment of a character with kind and loving heart that we all need in our lives.

I have read that it took ages to get these shots, as both Joe and Kit had to really text on their phones, with the camera placed over their shoulder. A long, drawn out recording block that was.

    The ending of this episode is so relatable. When I watched it for the first time, I couldn't not cry to be honest. I brought me back to when I was figuring myself out. Why am I like this? Also adds so much to the scene on the feelings of literally why am I like this? That you get. The song simply wouldn't leave my head for days. Every time I remembered it I just felt so melancholic and I don't even know why haha

      It's amazing how we can be transported back to those feelings right? I remember doing the same thing. I remember crying as an early teen asking "why has this happened to me? why am I having these feelings? why can't I just be normal?!" Little did we know we would grow up to understand that we are beautiful just the way we are! And honestly, something that won't leave my head for a very long time is how when I first sat down to film a first draft of my first heartstopper video I put that song on and just sat and cried for about 20 minutes. The power of music!

      This was beautifully put! Music is so powerful. As a musical theater fan, I love the power it has to tell stories and to transport us to different times, places, and people. I think it can be an amazing tool to help us be more emphatic. I've been thinking a lot about it after watching the last season of Stranger Things haha

    Interesting to see your comments to this, and how so much you respond to it. I came out when I was 14, way back in 1975. Interesting to compare that when I did that, it was other people's reactions that were problematic (e.g. the bullying and violence) rather than any inner turmoil I felt. Mind you I knew i was gay from the age of 4 when I found Sean Connery sexually exciting in "Thunderball" and decided I was going to marry him when i grew up!!

    When I watched Episode 1, I made the assumption that Isaac was straight because when Mr Ajayi asked Charlie if he had spoken to his friends about the Ben situation; Charlie said no because they wouldn't understand because they're not gay! Hopefully we get Isaac's character more fleshed out in Season 2!

    You know what else was "gross" about locker rooms? Being the overweight kid. I was always overweight when I was growing up and that was the WORST. I never heard anything said about being "gay" in the locker room, but of course when I was in school (elementary 82-88, junior high 88-91, high school 91-95) "coming out" wasn't a thing I ever saw nor heard about either. Much different time.

    Loving watching your reactions to this groundbreaking show. I am a happily married gay guy but there are moments in this show which trigger how awful it was growing up in 80s and 90s and not having these positive representation. Just one friend who could have said it was ok and been supportive like Nick is to Charlie. Don’t get me wrong it is amazing that this exists now and I love Heartstopper for being so honest and amazing but it chokes me every time how I didn’t have that and it would have meant everything to me

    I think Alice confirmed Isaac is asexual which is why I think Tao called himself the token str8 friend (which actually makes me wonder if Elle is bi or something) but I don't think Tao nor Charlie know if he is romantically interested in any gender yet because Charlie did make the point to tell his teachers that he can't talk to his friends because they are not gay and won't understand his situation...

    • @johnking5174

    • @johnking5174
      @johnking5174 Před 2 lety

      @@dillychan Well technically he is, but also remember, Heartstopper is all about sexuality being fluid. Look at Nick, before he met Charlie, he felt he was straight. Meeting Charlie changed all that for the better. So don't take what Tao said as 100% literal or true.

    • @dillychan
      @dillychan Před 2 lety

      @@johnking5174 Yes Tao is really not the best at assuming sexualities which is something people should not do altogether. However my point still stands that saying you're a token would imply you're the only one and to say something like that so confidently in front of your friends without any of them correcting you probably does mean that you're the only straight one among the group. So since we know Charlie is gay and Isaac is ace, it may also support the fact that Elle isn't straight ... or she just doesn't bother correcting Tao.
      Edit: Or it could simply be that she identifies as queer as do so many transgender people do because the straight label doesn't exactly capture the struggles of being trans and straight.

    Virtual hugs 🫂. I might not know precisely what your story was, but I feel it’s a struggle reconciling who you are and what others think you are. It’s taken me a long time to be more comfortable with my sexuality. I still have insecurities. In a later episode, Nick says something that sums up my bittersweet feelings toward this series. If I saw myself more and in a more normalized and positive way, I probably wouldn’t have wasted so much time hating myself and “praying” these feelings away. Heartstopper is indeed an emotional rollercoaster. I’ve yet to read all the available graphic novels, but I did only read the ones that the first season covers. While I’m tempted to find out what happens next, I want to be surprised and see season 2 first before expanding with the graphic novels. I just enjoy experiencing series and movies before filling in the gaps with the books or graphic novels they’re adapted from 😅 😬
