What I love about this episode is when Sarah says 'Charlie's a really special friend isn't he?' she knows right there deep down that there's something more than friendship but she respects Nick and doesn't press him to come out to her she just leave it at him saying 'yeah he is' - it's such a special moment 🥺❤️

I'm so glad you mentioned how the subtlelty of the ED hints is a mirror for how subtle symptoms of mental illness can be in real life, because even after God knows how many rewatches and having read the comics, I hadn't noticed that parallel

I picked up on so many of the subtle clues in the later episodes, but during a recent rewatch of the series I also noticed how in episode 1, when Tori finds him in the kitchen with a bowl of cereal, he never actually takes a bite of it. He just sloshes it about with the spoon while telling her that he broke up with his “boyfriend.” So subtle and heartbreaking once you notice it. 🥺💔

I had heard that S2 might focus more on his ED and I did pick up on the subtle signs of it throughout the season, from Tori offering to make him pizza or Nick asking if he wants something here at the movie theater, to lunches alone where he doesn't seem to eat much to the cereal in the kitchen.

When Charlie says that Nick isn't his type, you feel Nick's hurt, not just in his face....but the director does a very subtle and smart camera trick when Nick's reaction is shown....the camera ever so slightly moves back and upward....actually making Nick look like he is shrinking or deflating slightly. Look for it.... it's very effective and subtle, adding to the facial expression by Kit.

There is a good chance that Netflix will adapt at least Radio Silence, Solitaire, and maybe Nick and Charlie. If you notice Alice herself, she rewrote the character of Aled and transformed him into Issac with the possibility of an adaptation, Tori is a great big sister and her story should be told because she is great.

(You questioned Isaac's sexuality because of Tao saying he's the token straight friend - in Radio Silence, you'll find out about Aled's place in the LGBTQIA+ community. The show does such a great job of foreshadowing Charlie's eating disorder because every time he says he's not hungry, there's usually something terrible going on at the time and you just think to yourself that he's upset and just doesn't feel like eating. You don't think it's anything more serious than that.

What intrigues me about Harry is his expression in the cinema when Nick leaves to go after Charlie, the guys are behind him, and the camera is on his face. Something is very different about him in that moment and I want to really really know what it is. For most of his scenes he’s being quite performative, but in that moment he is truly just purely exuding an honest and direct seething negative emotion. That really made me wonder. I have a few head canons about Harry. Ironically he’s the most intriguing character for me, for the very reason that he’s not as clearly explored as all the others.

Funny you point out that harry still denies being homophobic. That's what so different from my generation. Growing up in the 80s bully's were most like the girls school. "lesbians are so gross". There was no pretend acceptance harry would have happily wrapped himself in the nomenclature of homophobe and quoted the bible or something similar. I know it's hard sometimes to see this as growth but I do ... In fact, notice the reasons he gives for picking on charlie. Yes he's gay but add he's got that weird friend who won't leave me alone. He can't verbally handle tao so he will come at charlie who "knows his place". He also smiles seeing how he's getting under nicks skin. I think this is more a competition for harry than homophobia. Nick is uber popular for just being nick... Harry had to buy his popularity. He even has to ask Nick to invite the cool people to his bday party. I think charlie is just target cause harry is petty yes but just can't hold up against tao and Nick. It's sad but I think your right. I'm guessing his back story would truly make you pity harry.
Ben... I'm not so sure. Though I'd bet the family is uber homophobic. And he's clearly self loathing. I find his barbed and far more deeply wounding cuts harder to empathize with.

There are a surprising amount of hints as to Harry's back story subtlety written into the show. Many of which come by way of Tao.
He's a sad boy who's bullying through pain. Fortunately, Harry works through it and actually turns into a decent guy. Well according to the novella Nick and Charlie anyway. I'm really hoping that is shown in season 2 or 3.

      @epicurius1 Před 2 lety +2

Hes not a decent guy in the novella, though. Part of what the comic and the novella make clear is that Harry's being homophobic and picks on Charlie because Charlie doeant have many friends and because he thinks it'll make him popular, and by rhe time of the novella, everybody at school are ok with Nick and Charlie being gay and they're popular, so Harry is friendly to Charlie because he wants to be popular.
It's not a real change of heart. He's just trying to chase approval.

I agree, as you mentioned, that the eating disorder signs were very subtle and could be overlooked if one had not read the novels. I did hear that in episode 7 the scene with Nick and Charlie by the popcorn machine had the popcorn in the popper transform into worms when Charlie looked at it (thus helping the viewers see clearly the effects of the disorder). The scene was cut as it was thought to be too dark in an already dark episode.

So interesting to see your reactions and hearing about your own backstory. I can understand why you connect so much with Heartstopper!
Have you watched Skam? Season 3 has an extremely touching storyline about a teen guy falling in love with another guy as well. It blew the world away when it aired in 2016, created a massive fandom and won several tv prizes. AND the episodes are quite short (think the shortest are 20 minutes long), easy to binge.

Honestly think they'll have to include Solitaire due to the time-lines overlapping. The alternative is to condense Heartstopper or alter its universe somehow. The first season covers several months so my guess is season three will likely include Solitaire content.
I agree wholeheartedly, Tori is great and deserves more attention in show. I have five sisters, four that are harshly homophobic. I totally understand how baffling & infuriating that can be. Ah, misappropriated religion; how I loathe thee!
As for Harry, he's just a not-so-bright guy who wants to be popular. He presumes he deserves popularity as status due to his familial wealth. He learned somewhere along the way that bullying others gets him attention. He stupidly mistakes his peer's fear for esteem & friendship.

I really hope in the next series they reintroduce the 3 friends of Nicks because they are major side characters and they show real growth in the books
Also, I don’t think it’s in keeping with her character for Elle to out Nick to anyone and that’s basically what she does when she tells Tao that Charlie and Nick are going out.
The reason Tao wasn’t told makes way more sense in the books. Here it seems like it was included for dramatic effect and it created Tao in a much more possessive and unreasonable manner which he never was in the books.

    Hi, guys.
Everytime I watch Heartstopper season 1 (my son CAN'T stop watching it!! 😂😂😂), I pay close attention to every single Nick's reaction to the situations he is in.
The fight between Nick and Harry happens because it was the last straw. Nick couldn't be lenient at that very moment. But, why has that fight happened?
If we remember, Nick got angry at Harry on episode 3, told Charlie, for the first time, he didn't like his mates because they were totally different from Charlie. But, did he get away from them? No.
When Harry and his nasty followers go look for Nick (after the kiss), Nick says everything is ok. No!!! Nothing was ok. Harry, as usual, was nasty, disgusting. But why has Nick accepted that? Because he is negatively sensible, as Charlie is negatively sensitive. This is the reality!
If we pay attention, on episode 4, Nick wants Charlie to keep their relationship as a secret. And, by doing that, his unquestionable "straightness" wouldn't become questionable. Also, nothing wouldn't change in his ordinary routine, and he'd be able to carry on fearless.
On the other hand, Charlie took all the responsibility for he is out.
    That wasn't fair, indeed.
If Nick had broken up with those nasty guys, he wouldn't have gotten into that fight. What made him not do it? Fear and cowardice.
When someone is negatively sensible, they don't realize they intoxicate themselves and others.

The only thing I can remember that I wanted to comment on is that I think you're the only person on here who, like me, would like some background context for Harry's behaviour. While I don't want his story to take up space that could be given to telling the stories of all our under-represented groups (because, let's face it, rich white straight cis boys and their stories have dominated the airwaves for years), I can't help but be curious. As shitty as I can objectively say Ben is, the acting is so bloody phenomenal that I actually feel sorry for Ben in that scene. Or maybe that just tells you more about me, whenever I get attacked I start wondering what the person must be struggling with and want to give them a hug. Yes I have issues and yes I’m in therapy but idk, I think Tao, as a safe person, saying to Charlie that everything is his fault, KNOWING that he has a tendency to blame himself and feel like his existence alone is annoying, is way worse, than what Ben clearly illogically projects and spews out of jealousy and self-hatred. The only reason that what Ben says hits Charlie is because he further gets “confirmation” when Tao and Nick get into fights. Conveniently missing the fact that Harry is involved in both, but there’s a very logical reason for missing that, namely that Charlie takes Harry’s existence as a given one way or another rather than as an individual who’s responsible for his actions and decisions. I hope that makes sense

Sorry to hear about your troubles, mate. The writing is so good because Alice has kept the drama limited to one focus--the boys developing a new relationship and how the supporting characters affect that development. On other shows, Charlie would be a drug dealer, have an alcoholic father, and Tori cuts herself because she doesn't fit in. Since Nick's dad is French, he is torn between two cultures and two bickering parents, so Nick takes PEDs to remain that rugby star he is to impress the Oxford University rugby scouts. Imogen hasn't been seen since episode 5. Perhaps she is off looking for her estranged mother hoping to move in with her since her dad got a job at Princeton, because Imogen doesn't want to move. None of that was shown since it had nothing to do with the main characters.

I think even with a context of Harry’s stories won’t make anything different. Let’s assume he grew up in a family which is lacking of love, care, or decent education on communication or how to express themselves, or even abused by his parents, that doesn’t make his behaviours any acceptable.
A lot of people who were traumatised are still decent to the others. People like Harry must have been encouraged or feel encouraged to do the nasty things. And that’s the disgusting parts.
One thing about the homophobic people is that, no matter which generation or culture background they are from, they are OBSESSED with gay people. This obsession is kind of fascinating in a sense. Why? Why are they obsessed? I really wanna talk to one of them and break it down piece by piece to see what they are thinking. Sorry to hear that some C-word stole your vehicle. Hope they catch the a-hole(s) responsible. You are in need of that season finale goodness to lift you up!

      * maybe look into investing into an external video recorder to bypass that ridiculous record limit. That used to be some idiotic limitation years ago, but newer cameras have let go of that limit. Oh well, just wanted to say that, I’m case you weren’t aware 😬

thank you! I am looking at an external recorder it’s just £££. It’s on the list for sure but for now I will have to put up with the record limits. I am looking at getting a new camera body as mine is 4 years old now and the one i’m looking at has no recording limits THANK GOD.

To answer your question, Kids are the way they are because puberty has set in, their chemical balance is all over the place. And there is something inside all of us that is distinctly primal. Yes, we’re talking old caveman days. The strong shall survive and the weak will parish. Just look at, and study, the scene of the Reindeer games from “Rudolph…” They were rough housing, exposing, what they seem to be, a weakness. And they were cheered on by the adult, who should be teaching kindness and understanding. Instead, he imprinted the bad qualities to the masses and imprinted guilt and shame to the one who is different. Sound familiar?

This is my least favorite of the episodes because it's the most negative and has the most drama. But its lows allow for such highs on the finale.

It’s probably one of my favourites because of those reasons. It also feels incredibly real which is why the show hits so hard.

I know patreon is all the rage so you can make more money, but I don't understand a lot of reaction videos that do get uploaded to CZcams. They are so badly edited (cut) that it makes them literally unwatchable.

you have to be really, really careful with reaction videos on youtube because they very easily get a copyright strike and then they get removed which after hours of editing is soul destroying. I would happily have uploaded full videos to youtube otherwise but unfortunately it’s not the case.

@@JackieRossLavender Yeah...totally understand. I enjoy your videos...it just sucks that things are the way they are. TBH, I'm surprised that the full length vids are even allowed on Patreon. Either the studios aren't aware or don't care as it isn't as visible? I don't know.
Sorry for the negative comment...your video was like the 5th reaction video I've watched today (probably seen 100+) and its hard to watch because of the cuts ya'll have to do.
Edit: I changed my wording from "edited" in my original post to "cut" as that is what I intended (I couldn't remember the word earlier lol).

@@MemphisTiger basically because Vimeo is a paid for platform and doesn’t have as strict copyright rules. I get what you’re saying it is annoying. and in my first reaction I tried to cut as little as possible but it got pulled instantly. It is what it is unfortunately.
