I lived there as a Yank during conversion to decimal. The old system was cumbersome but versatile in some ways. How much is one sixth of a dollar? There isn’t such a thing, just an approximation. No rounding in the duodecimal system. Many years later I was visiting my sister in Scotland. She warned me not to patronize a local shop. The proprietor was crooked. I needed some newspapers because I also read the opinion column and send a letter to the editor. I’ve been published four times. The Indian shop owner correctly sensed I was not a local. He tried to shortchange me. I just smiled, looked at him, and told him my sister warned me you were dishonest. He gave me the rest of my change. My father was a math whiz and was getting short changed at a bank in Athens. He sensed something was wrong so he returned to the same teller for another currency exchange. She was a little unnerved when he made a gesture with his fingers as if asking for another card in Blackjack. He did that until her share of his money was all his. Go dad!

Hi Paul, that was a really good buy. While watching I checked which ones I'm missing in the brass date run and you found all 3 of them, 49, 50 and 51. Probably going to get them separately as keep getting job lots and no luck with them dates. Great video.

The corrosion is mainly copper hydroxide I think. In such cases, judicial cleaning with a proprietary coin cleaner would be beneficial and you have nothing to lose really anyway.

I decided to restart collecting coins (had done so as a schoolboy, always checking bus fare change for 1919 KN pennies!) after finding a huge stash of threepenny coins in my mother-in-law's house. Got a full set apart from the rarer George VI ones. Luckily there were no examples with the horrible corrosion that plagued this coin hunt! Can only presume the bags were kept in slightly damp conditions and that might accelerate the deterioration seen?

I would sit the thrupenny bit next to the hole instead of having to keep taking them out again when you find a better condition one, it would save damage to the album, which already looks damaged, I'm not a collector, I just think it would mean less wear and tear to album, but still that's a good wee collection, I think the threepenny bit is one of the best looking British coins minted, it's just a nice solid wee coin, even better back in day when they were legal tender, and what you could buy with them if you were 5\6 years old in the mid 60's, also I'd rather have had 2 threepenny bits, as a wee tanner , it seemed more haha, an interesting and informative wee film.

Best find of a Three Penny Bit, ...........a rockpool at Bigbury-on Sea in Devon.
Someone had put a Three Penny Bit in a small rockpool goodness knows how long ago, sometime in the 1960's most likely.
I found it in the early 1990's. It was understandably somewhat covered in green seaweed, but I recognised the shape.
I just wanted to let them know that after all that time, someone had actually found it, and it was still there despite tides and seasons !
It's now in my 'treasure' collection.
