  • Penang's vibrant and diverse capital, George Town, is located on the Malaysian island of Penang. The city is noted for its British colonial structures, Chinese shophouses, and mosques, and was once an important Straits of Malacca commerce hub. George Town is a modern metropolis with skyscrapers and shopping complexes beyond the old town.
Today we visit Penang Hill, a hiking trail and funicular railway, which provides a panoramic view of the city. Then a stone's throw away we go. Thean Kong Thnuah Temple is a Chinese temple located at the foot of Penang Hill in Air Itam, Penang. Completed in 1869, it is the only temple in Malaysia built specifically for the worship of the Jade Emperor and becomes a focal point for the annual Jade Emperor's Birthday celebrations on the 9th day of Chinese New Year. From there we walked to More than two hundred years ago, the Bats' Cave Temple of Tua Peh Kong was established at the foot of Penang Hill, on Jalan Pokok Ceri. The temple is remarkable and unique since it is home to a few dozen bats who live in the cave inside the temple. Then just a quick walk to Jinggangshan Penang Hill Temple, the main component of the temple, which is a hall or pavilion with a standing Buddha image, is located next to it, on slightly higher ground. The entrance to the hall is marked by a large arch with the temple's name, Jinggangshan. As you ascend the stairwell towards the hall, you'll notice a great number of gilded pagodas, or stupas, lining the hill. Then finally we finished off the day at little India which is a vibrant neighbourhood with dozens of Indian clothes, jewellery, and street food shops and vendors.

Looking for something a bit different than the usual Penang-Georgetown tours and activities? Here are 6 things that you can do on the south and southwest sides of Penang island (Balik Pulau, Teluk Kumbar and Batu Maung):
    1) explore the non-touristy beaches in Balik Pulau and Teluk Kumbar area: Pasir Panjang beach, Malindo beach, Ombak Damai beach, Tanjung Assam beach and others
    2) enjoy the scenic Balik Pulau villageside and green paddy fields on foot, cycling or ATV ride
    3) explore Balik Pulau quaint town, its food and its own murals and street arts.
    4) hiking to Esen beach and Esen hill in Batu Maung. ATV ride tour also available
    5) spend time with animals: Countryside horse stable, Audi dream farm, Saanen dairy goat farm.
    6) check out Penang war museum in Batu Maung. It was a British military fortress built in the 1930s, then abandoned for 60 yrs before being restored and converted into a war museum.

Hi Jack the black sauce in your laksa is not soya sauce - it is actually prawn paste sauce. It brings the laksa to another level. About the fishes you saw, I share your concerns. Felt bad for those fishes - hope that someone has the common sense to release them into a river so they could live in their natural environment.

The bat cave temple was burned down on March 2022. Those fishes used to be kept in a pond inside the temple. Not sure if there are any cultural significance to those fishes though.
