Tuomas said in an interview once that he has some of the vocals muted in his in-ear monitors because it's tough for him to hear the lyrics... I think people just took this and assume he's on the verge of a breakdown while playing it and therefore they must be comforting him. It gets repeated so much as if it's true because people see others saying it but it's just speculation.

Although Floor is probably the most visceral singer on the planet, it's the song itself that has that impact. The first time I heard this song was when it came out with Anette and it hit me back then. But you're right, Floor is the Goddess we want and Annette knew that which was why she fiercely objected to Floor "temporarily" replacing her. Everybody who was into Symphonic Metal at that time knew who Floor was and what she brought to the table. Now the rest of the world is finding out as well.
And on a side note to illustrate just how important Floor is to Nightwish, Tuomas, in an interview, stated that if Floor ever left Nightwish he would disband the group 'cause Floor is a one of a kind talent and he doesn't want to go through another recruitment process. That's how much she means to HIS band.

Not sure how much background you got on this one so I'll give you the cliffsnotes version. Tuomas was very depressed after the band parted ways with Tarja. He lost his best friend and was getting a lot of hate from their fans over the way it went down (myself included if we're being honest about this). As memory serves he even got called out and publicly shamed by the prime minister of Finland. He contemplated ending Nightwish entirely but Tony Kakko of Sonata Arctica talked him out of it. In this song he kills himself figuratively rather than actually committing suicide. Even while doing that he is a stickler for details if you watch when the child's voice says "I only have three minutes and counting" it is exactly three minutes until the pendulum falls.
Jukka was the first drummer and has been with them basically since the beginning. The band had another bad breakup with Anette. After Floor & Troy came onboard Tuomas said that this was the final membership change of the band that it was to emotionally draining and if they had to replace anyone else they would probably just go their separate ways. Jukka had been having problems with insomnia all through the Imaginaerium world tour and things were not getting any better, he needed a break. Jukka enlisted his friend Kai to take over for him so he could see to his health and presented it to the band as a fait accompli. Jukka is still with Nightwish in a managerial capacity but has been unable to get well enough to do long tours so Kai took over the position permanently.

Thank you, very nice reaction. This is not only a song, it is Tuomas requem. Tuomas, Emppu, Jukka and Tarja they are all from a small village called Kitee in Eastern Finland not far from the Russisn border. They were all school mates from early on. They were teenager's when they started Nightwish, a bunch of friends. Kitee has 10 000 inhabitants, so it's not very big. What happend was that Tarjas husband managed to turn Tarja against Tuomas to a point where he had no other way out than to get rid of him and to do that she had to go too. What Marcelo did was he destroyed a friendship Tuomas could actually never overcome. He wrote this song to heal himself and actually never thought to record it in the first way. Tuomas and Tarja has never spoken or seen each other after that End Of An Era concert in 2005 after she was fired. The news was one of the biggest news bombs in Finland, because Nightwish was about Tarja, there was no singer before her, every song was written withe her in mind. Echoing what others have said, understanding the lyrics makes this song even more emotional, seeing as it was about Tuomas' experience of when he fired Tarja and the outcry from the fans. He became suicidal, but instead chose to write killing himself in the lyrics as opposed to actually killing himself.

Sergey, don't be embarrassed for teary up. I get teared up when Floor sings like an Angel. There is a backstory of this song. In a nutshell, original singer, Tarja started with the band. She and Tuomas are or were childhood friends living Finland. Both of them went to an academy or institute of music. At the school, Tuomas , Tarja and few people started a band I think in 1996. Tuomas named the band, Nightwish. Everything was going good for the band, until in 2005, either Tarja quit or being fired by Tuomas from the band. Then fans ganged up on him blaming Tuomas for Tarja leaving....
It gotten so bad, that Tuomas put the band on hiatus. He was very deeply depressed, and even considered suicide. But in 2007, Tuomas went into treatment, and regroup Nightwish with new singer, Anette Olzon. But she lasted only about 5 years until 2012. Floor Jansen started out as touring vocalist with Nightwish in 2013 as you seen with Ghost Live Score in Wacken. Rest is history. My opinion is that Tuomas was deeply in love with Tarja because he went into depression. He did commit suicide in musical sense.

She brings that x factor. That gutted everyone. Then Empuu being a ass. Comes to the mic "thank you, good night". Then puts his hands up like "what, you want more?"

Another thing, especially when it comes to Nightwish in general. Since they have the London Symphony Orchestra and one of the choirs in the UK on permanent retainer, they record their albums with them. So you are hearing the actual symphony and choirs with them on each album track. However, it would be logistically impossible to take an entire choir and symphony with them on tour, so they have the backing tracks playing underneath the band. that's how you get that symphonic feel without the symphony and choir being there. prime example: listen to the album version of Ghost Love Score. You'll hear the choir as the backing vocals to the lead in the chorus of the song. In this case, the boy soprano at the beginning is from a boy's choir, but is part of the backing track. Floor's vocals here are also part of that backing track. So while they play live, there may be a backing track underneath them, with which they also perform.
there's a documentary floating around (I want to say it's for the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful) that shows their entire recording process. As a musician (I'm a guitarist/saxophonist/bassoonist myself), it's worth watching.

Tuomas Wrote the song when he was dealing with serious depression from having to fire his great friend and original singer of Nightwish. He (tuomas) said he wasn't contemplating committing suicide but he did write his death in the song to help his mental health, when you see the other band members come to talk to him its simply to make sure hes okay he said hes had to have floors vocals cut before to help get him threw the song. It has a vary emotional story behind the song. also when you hear him say i only have three minutes in counting its exactly three minutes and some change to when tuomas cuts his throat implying his death in the song, he also wrote a the final bit of the song after having a conversation with his mother about his mental health. The song truly brings water to my eyes even tho i have heard it probably over 2000 times

As mind blowing as this proformance is and how extremely talented they all are, Tuomas making this whole composition a reality always sticks out to me.
It's metal, it's symphony, it's musical theater, it's a heart wretching story and it's absolutly friggin incomprehensible that one guy can plan this all out and find people who can preform it at this level and he has been doing it for 25 years... It's not a fluke.
He truly is the Mozart of Metal.
If he do not go down in the history books as one of our times greatest composers, the world may as well burn down to cinders cuz they're would be no hope for the future of intelligent life.

Once you have a certain understanding of NIGHTWISH, it makes this song easier to really appreciate. Having said that, you MUST check out the back story to this song. You are correct. That's a recording of a British choir boy. Floor told Tuomas she could sing that part but he decided to continue with the recording of the choir boy. And if you don't tear up somewhere in this song, you don't have a heart. BTW, this song is written backwards. If you look up the lyrics it starts with "The End" and the lyrics end with "The Beginning'. I think Troy is singing harmony on Part 5.

It's been a joy to see someone else fall for Nigthwish, is always a lovely thing to behold.
Also I've noticed you quite enjoy Marco's abilities (who doesn't right), so here's a sugestion most people don't know about, cause it isn't a live song, and most people that asks for stuff just knows the live videos and asks for the same ones over and over again.
Nightwish has a song wich is by far their heaviest, sang entirely by Marco, only in album form, they have never performed it live and never will due to it's content, this has been said by Tuomas himself (it's a song dedicated to Tarja's husband and agent at the time she left, so Tuomas feelings about him weren't pretty haha).
It's such a heavy song that, if it wasn't for Marco's voice, you wouldn't even recognize it as a Nightwish song, it's pretty amazing, check it out. Name is "Master Passion Greed".
There's a video made by fans with a montage of live clips tough, that's a cool choice if you don't wanna just react to a static screen.

As to your question about backing tracks, as I didn't see anybody else address it after a cursory look at the top comments. Yes, they use massive backing tracks. But they are all written, scored, or whatever you want to call it by Tuomas and recorded in the studio as integral parts of the studio albums. The backing tracks are the London Symphony Orchestra, either full or subcomponents thereof, and large, multi-voice choirs / gospel choirs record in studio also. I know on one album the choirs were credited as supplied by Metro Voices of London. Don't know if it is always Metro Voices or if they employ other contract choir houses also. For example, in Scaretale, you heard a children's choir doing the child's dream sequence in the intro vocals. The intro ghostly verse in Poet/Pendulum is, I'm told, a boy-soprano from the choir. Some people here can quote you his name; I can't recall it. Pretty sure it is the same choir boy who recites the spoken word verses also, such as the "being raped again and again and again," as in it being the "Peter Pan" innocent child inside Tuomas (who dies in this song) being raped by Edgar Allan Poe's swinging pendulum blade as it slices him in half again and again and again.

Yes its a backing vocal by a choir boy. You'd be surprised how many people spend the first 2 mins talking about Floor's incredible range! The backing vocals had "bolstering" and minor harmonies for Annette. I assumed they removed the doubling, but the minor harmonies are still there. The mix is slightly off.
This song requires Floor to put everything in. If you don't know the history or lyrics, research them after. This song is band-defining for Nightwish. You can feel the emotion pour through even if you don't know! It's also one of the best examples of Tuomas' understanding of how to build up and reduce intensity of a track to increase your engagement, and the impact of later sections. The ending to this song is the most insane reduction of a song to "small" to finish it. That and the showmanship and solidarity of the band, it's a tear every time.
