      Did it several times and found that my canopy is a real beast if you let the stall fully develop. It will stay in a dive with the center cell deflated. Glad I found out during training at high altitude :D

      You want some comments? LOL, Eye opening experience...student doing static line jumps. I was coming in late evening to the LZ, light winds from the front. Big guy, small chute. I was wearing a helmet with a radio, one way, ground to student, listening to a jump master that was on the ground. I was pulling lightly on my toggles as I was approaching the LZ. I guess the JM didn't like the way I was flying, the JM kept telling me to pull more toggle....Finally he raised his voice and said to "pull on down on the toggles"....so I did, all the way down! Chute stalled! I shot forward like on a swing, as I rocked back, the chute folded. I released the toggles going full sail and "bicycling" to get it to reinflate. It caught air, reinflated and I was now going forward straight at the windsock. I immediately began "lightly" tugging one toggle and letting the other go full sail and steered around it and managed to make a safe, soft landing. My buddy, (first and last time out for him), made the comment on the way to the bar from there, "you really wowed the crowd with that last jump. You could hear everyone gasp when your chute stalled." BTW, that was my last jump. I have a few more hair raising stories in my short time skydiving. Ever have a chute open while doing a static line jump while still holding to the strut? I Have. Then have almost a full line twist? I was asked why I didn't do a cut away? My reply was "I looked at my altimeter, saw I was at 3500 feet and figured I had around 2000 feet to "fix it" bicycling twisting and turning before going to my last resort. I guess I made the right decision, I'm here." That's when I found out I had a canopy deployed while still on the strut. The JM that put me out in the pre-jump brief had said "I'll say door opening, get out. When I see you on the strut looking at me and we make eye contact, I'll point at you to release when we're over the spot." I guess when the chute went out he panicked. He kept waving his arms. I thought he was saying get farther out on the strut, so I moved farther out. When he looked like he was about to exit the aircraft, I said, "I'm outta here" and let go. It took about 1-2 seconds for the cute to open as I watched the tail on the plane go by. It seemed awful close. The static line pilot chute was still attached to the static line, the entire chute had deployed, but didn't catch air and was backwards. I found out from the pilot afterwards, the plane was almost flying sideways at a stall. They had taken a quick "survey" inside the plane and decided the JM that put me out needed to knock me off the strut before they all went in. After I'd landed, way off course, but on the airstrip, I was asked why I waited to release from the plane. I told him the JM was supposed to point at me to release and he never did. When asked why I released when I did I said I was taught if something doesn't seem right, do what you think is right. When he looked like he was going to jump onto me, I said, I'm outta here and went for it. BTW, please cover doing spirals. LOL, was told how to "enter" but not to properly "exit" one. Try doing a 90* spiral running full sail with one toggle pulled down, then just release it....Yeah, the canopy collapsed...reinflated and I carried on. You enter one slowly and exit slowly I guess....

    @1478521fvbgt Před 4 lety +4

    Hi, Im a paraglider pilot, and while doing low or nil wind landings specially, we are told not to slow that canopy at all, reason - more speed while coming in to land, means more energy to flare, thus eventually softer landing. I found that point of your really conflicting to digest?

    • @SkydiveVibes
      @SkydiveVibes  Před 4 lety

      Oh you are right. I am not talking about slowing down the canopy for landing. We are better to go full flight before the flare. But understanding the stalling point will help in completing the flare and go all the way till before the stalling point. Does that make sense? A lot of people don't actually finish their flare fully but if you can slow down your canopy to the max during the flare it is better.

    • @1478521fvbgt
      @1478521fvbgt Před 4 lety +3

      Skydive Vibes Basically in every landing you're supposed to bury the toggles all the way down as far as possible just before your feet touch the ground...and the pilot needs to judge that moment correctly depending upon a situation for a good landing. Since we are essentially stalling the canopy rt at the moment we touch the ground. If anyone isn't flaring to the max at the time of landing then they're doing it wrong! Or maybe it's different in swooping/acro etc.
      From my listening if your video it made me think that you were asking to slow the canopy while coming in for nil wind landing. Though you have added a disclaimer, but still since your channel is educational for budding skydivers maybe you wanna highlight this part so no one unknowingly misinterprets it.

      I was never taught to stall as a means of addressing a mal. Students are told to pump the brakes to address closed end cells but that’s about it. We have a very different approach to the use of the reserve in general, I think, given the greater altitude that’s commonly in hand and the emphasis on cutaway.

    I thought that explanation of how a wing works had been disproved. Isn't it all Newtonian? Many aircraft can fly upside down which refutes the aerofoil explanation. Also, Rogallo hang glider wings are single-surface (like beginner's hang gliders) - surely with no aerofoil shape they should fall out of the sky?
