- Come along and check out this blast from the past. A 2001 Buick Century with the big 3.1 liter. The customer complaint was a squeaking belt. It didn't take long to find out the vehicle needed more than just a belt

This reminds me of my 76 Camerro. In 1986 I bought it with bad exhaust... the muffler was gone so it was loud. I took it to the shop and had quiet exhaust put on. When I showed up to pick up the car I asked the mechanic, "Is she nice and quiet now?" His reply was legend. "It's so quiet you can hear the motor knock."
That's not good I hope it went to rod bearing but I bet it was it's fixable have a good day
Camaro
"If they're not 10 x 1.50, they're gunna be."
Classic
3/8 nc very close. FORD TRUCK assembly-Louisville, Ky. in 80’s never bothered with 10mm thread in CAT metric engines-they ran 3/8 bolts in with an air wrench.
It's a thread chaser/adjuster, one of them there multi purpose tools, lol.
An “offer” they could not refuse.
If not they with 3/8/16 have a good day
I drove my 2000 Century Custom today. 82000 miles. She's got the 3100, power windows and a working tape deck. And, being in Wyoming she's got no rust. Better yet, I can count the modules on one hand, unlike the two 2022s in the fleet.
“If I can do it you can do it”
You clearly have overestimated my skill with wrenches
Your commentary is priceless. "It's not potty trained".
Love this channel. 😀
It's wearing a Napa now. Hmm, that doesn't cross the Atlantic, I think.
“Not a sponsor” 😬
I have an 09 Impala like that. Runs like a top leaks like a sieve.
"If it's 10 1.50, it's gonna be"
“It’s not potty trained so there’s oil everywhere.” 21 Buick years is about 100 people years, so not surprising it’s leaking everywhere. Great videos. Love you enthusiasm Mr O.
I never thought of sealing the end of the crank. Just bolted them on. Maybe an old dog can learn new tricks...
Mr.O, Engineer here! You have taught me more about diagnosing cars than my automotive school has in 4 years! Thank you.
As a senior EE student I know you’re engineer because the number one rule of engineering is to make sure the other person knows you’re an engineer
@@W2wxftcxxtcrw exactly
I'm no PE but I can fix a rusty old car 🤷♂️
@@W2wxftcxxtcrw the way I know you're both not mechanics is because you'd know an engineer is a dirty word bc they're who curse us with designs that are terrible to service.

@@yeahitskimmel: Same here, Kimmel.
Haha… “Its not potty trained” love your humor Mr. O
I still remember working on these at the dealer. Those centuries had this huuuuge front air dam underneath that scraped on every single driveway in the whole world. Pretty nice cars to drive though, if you're into the "little ol' lady" style.
I guess did a 2007 Grand Marquis for a friend of ours great car and she's happy now a squirrel had done the same thing that happened Eric and built the nest inside the air cleaner cleaned it out with no filtering she was good to go in the car runs great have a good day
That's not a oil leak, it's a active corrosion mitigation system! 😁
"If it's not 10/150 they're gonna be." Great job, man.
The quote of the week - "If they're not 10/150, they're gonna be..."😄 Superb. Great video as always sir.
thanks, Eric, for my evening entertainment.... who needs HBO and all the others with the garbage they show when we can learn and be entertained.... SMA is all i need
South Main,North Main, Main Main, this is THE Main Auto Channel, always a pleasure to come back, you're the Main lol
"If I can do it, you can do it." Legendary tag line. For the many people people that benefit from your awesome videos, another truthful tag line might 'If I can do it, I can show you how to do it.', because that's precisely what happens. Thanks again Eric.
Sometimes I feel like saying, " if you can find somebody else to do it, you're probably better off" 🤣
Lol
If i can do it, you can do it, with 20+ years of experience...
@@SouthMainAuto I get it but please don't act on it. We need you man!
Well as a mechanic some jobs are a really pain lol. And the issue is always the boss wants it done yesterday lol, but as long as we do it right i sleep well.
"If they're not 10x1.50 they're gonna be" 😄
That car is pretty clean for it's age and where it resides
"If they're not 10 x 150... they're gonna be". Laughed out loud.
Thanks for watchin' you say ?
Well, thanks for postin' 🙂🍻
Another nice job, Eric. Frankly not sure how the owner heard the squealing belt over the lifter clacking.... Then again my wife tells me that I don't hear her but can detect the smallest squeak in my car. Listening and hearing, two different skills.
That's a straight up engine knock. Welcome to the 3.1 world. If they're not knocking, they're not running
I so agree with the wife comment. At my age I can ask her to repeat something at least 2-3 times. But I can detect unusual sounds in the car that are almost undetectable.
"If it ain't 10 1.50 it will be". Favorite line yet
Must be a transplant, surely no NY car could look that good after 21 years... Great video, Eric!
The leaking motor oil over time eats softens the rubber in the balancer till it swells and turns to jelly . The balancer flies off and usually goes straight through the radiator ! Lol 🎉
I'm impressed the LIM in the 3100 didn't condemn the car to a junk yard.
"Nice and quiet now." 🤣
First time id ever heard of harmonic dampers separating was on a crown Vick. Same complaint as you have. They diagnosed it. The guy said back it out, He'll drive it like that until his next check. Sure enough as its backed out of the shop, off the outer pulley goes and flies across the shop as fast as it could. The wall finally stopped it and it spun in the same spot for probably 5 seconds. That was an interesting experience
I just put a thermostat in a Grand am with 395595 miles on it. with the big 3.4
You make it look so easy, thanks for another fantastic video. My first car was a used 1972 Buick with a V8. Pristine condition and I had it for years. I suspect Buick will soon go the way of Oldsmobile though, all their clientele got old and died off. I say bring back Pontiac as a GM sports car brand. Trans Am, GTO, Firebird…
I've got a 3.1 in a 1999 Buick Century, bought new with 3 miles on it, now at 245,000. Never my intention to keep it that long, but all the new cars are awful in one way or another. When Eric said that the engine was "not potty trained" I sprayed my coffee all over my monitor laughing so hard. I have multiple floor diapers for mine. :) Thanks for a great laugh to start the day.
It doesn't matter the subject. Be it electrical diag, fuel system diag, or muffler bearing and blinker fluid changes, I LOVE your channel. Thanks for all you do Eric.
Wow! A 21 year old car in NY??? Wonders never cease.
Every Buick and Cadillac should come with a bag of speedy dry in the trunk from the factory.
Heck yeah a Older GM stuff , same setup on my 87 celebrity eurosport 2.8v6 and my 90 lumina eurosport 3.1v6
Everyone knocks the older buicks for being an old mans car but they make a great commuter car. They're very comfortable to drive and at the end of the day, you don't feel beat up from the ride!
Customer calls me and asks if he can bring his car right in. I say: I have a lot going on today, but I will make a few minutes to figure out the issue. About 10 minutes later, I am standing in the shop drying my hands off to call on more parts when my customer pulls into my lot. He pulls up in front of the overhead door and I hear a bunch of banging and wiping and turn back to see something buzz across the lot and then a worker from next door yell: HOLY SHIT!!!! Yeah, my customer pulled in just in time for his "STRANGE NOISE" to show it's ugly head.. His balancer and pulley flew off and hauled ass across my parking lot into the road where my neighbor was loading flowers into their delivery van and it scared the crap out of him!!! That was when I learned that NOT ALL CHEVIES received a CRANK BOLT for their balancers....
A 21-year-old Buick?! Wow! For a split-second, I thought it looked like my mom's 17-year-old LeSabre. Thanks as always, Eric!
21 yr old buick, 15000 miles grandpa never drives but to the grocery store once a week. lol.
@@karlgutenburg9176 And not in the snow and salt.
91+ Century, 97+ Regal, 85+ LeSabre and 07-11 Lucerne will run 400-500k with just basic maintenance. Super solid cars.
I have an ‘04 LeSabre i commute in and it is in far better shape and less troublesome than the ‘08 Camry it replaced.
@@karlgutenburg9176 Caught a ride in a Buick taxi up in Timmins ON and the driver told me it was the best taxi he ever owned. They chuck a shit ton of salt on the roads there too.
I have a 21 year old LeSabre I inherited a couple years ago and it runs like a champ, cars can survive in the rust belt if you wash them regularly.
"It's been a while,..." "If they're not 10mm 1.5, they're gonna be." LOL! My kind of sarcasm/humor. Love your vids.
WISH WE HAD A MECHANIC AS HONEST AS YOU AROUND HERE YOU DO GREAT WORK
I can’t trust any mechanic. I wish I lived close to SMA
I second that
Yup. Few and far between.
Good ole CV axle spreading its greasy love everywhere.
long live the GM 60 degree V6
"If there not 10-150, they're gonna be!" My kinda machine work!
Back in the day we had a series of Jeep Cherokees with the mighty 4L 6-cyl - every one had the balancer walk off and start hitting the timing cover making a screeching sound. Pretty simple fix as the radiator, etc., didn't have to be taken out.
Never miss an episode and always learn something new. Today I learned top corner on a circle.
I always fill the gap around the garter spring with grease when I drive a seal like this. There is nothing worse than looking in after seating the seal and seeing the spring dangling!
Oh I hear that. You get pretty handy with a 90° pick and can spin that spring right back in its place
Nice to see an old Buick still on the road in NY, I have a 02 Lesabre that still running like a champ, but the road salt has started to do its damage.
If he can do it you can do it !
That's how ALL V6's should sound.🥰🎵🎶
There's nothin' quite like the ol' fashioned handie, my guy!
Wow . 21 years old and it still has sills and chassis rails !! 🎉
Maybe there's an old vid of Eric Fluid Filming it...
@@greebo7857 fluid films itself by the looks of it.
"if they're not 10x1.50 they're gonna be" HAHAHA! Been there done that before!
You lucky man, the 3.8L is a bear. I had to make a special tool to hold the pulley just to get the bolt out. I thought my Strap-On impact was getting weak so I searched the inter-Web, low and behold there are a load of people who had the same issue I did.
Made it look easy,Sign of a mechanic on top of his game. Thanks for vid.
The old Buick roles again. Good for another 50,000. summer time only.
One thing i truly love of eric is his high speed when workin
Example: 058 removing lug nuts
I must be getting old because I look those old early-mid 2000s cars and think “I wish we still had cars like that.” They still exist in my area because we are smart enough not to put corrosion promoters on our roads every year (and yes, it does snow here) but it’s very difficult to find a car of this age that hasn’t been trashed by the multiple owners. Very simple, basic cars that are easy to fix and cheap to own.
Mid 90s to mid 2000s vehicles were the best. Just enough technology to make them turn-key "forget about it" reliable, but not so much junk on them to break. And most were relatively easy to work on. I never really liked the styling of these Buicks, but they really have held up well over time and miles. A surprising number of these cars have survived even in the salt belt states!
Nothing like a technician that takes pride in his work & goes the extra mile! Very glad that you are passing it on through your videos.
Thanks for resuming regular video uploads; makes my life more complete!
My daily driver is a 2000 malibu with 52,000 miles on it. I have found that it is much easier to install a new belt on all the grooved pulleys than slide the belt on the slick one. That works on most all cars.
I really enjoy learning from your videos. One of the biggest improvements I’ve picked up is to slow down and pay closer attention to detail. I’ve always been in a hurry to complete an operation, probably because life is busy. Now that I take more time and give more attention to details, I find that the job gets completed with better results and I enjoy the process much more. Thank you for the many fine lessons.
Better slowing down take a good look at things and do it once and do it right because cleaning up your mess after the fact and running for parts can drive you absolutely crazy have a great day
We had a 91 Riviera 3.8 supercharged. Was doing the out of balance stuff. I traced it incorrectly to the supercharger which set me back $1100. Finally checked the balancer and the rubber was totally separated. I had never seen or heard of one going bad. I have now.
I wish CZcams and the internet was around in 95.
I was thinking, "If it's not a 10 by 150 it will be," and 5 seconds later you said it. LOL
Never ceases to amaze me. Comes in for a belt noise I can bearly hear. And doesn’t seem concerned about the slamming and banging of the missing bolt.
When I was younger, I joined an a cappella group called the "Harmonic Balancers".....
I'm disappointed in you Eric, you used brake clean but didn't put up the jingle for the cleaner. Tiss Tiss.
If it's not 10X1.50 it's gonna be! LOL I haven't seen one of these fully loaded 2001 GMs with rockers since 2001!
GM had been using that W-body chassis since 1987, 2016 Impala Limited was the last vehicle to have it until every General Maintenance received an Epsilon Treatment and lost every ounce of character.
I had a 3.1V6 in my 1994 Pontiac Sunbird and that was a fantastic combination. It was a fantastic engine / transmission combination. I LOVED the car. If they had continued to make them I would have bought another. I had two break downs in 18 years. Once the fuel pump quit.....just quit. Another time the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm failed and the car wouldn't start at a gas station. Strangest thing. One time a coil pack failed but the car was able to limp home......up a steep grade all the way up the hill on four cylinders.
@3:02, "...if they are not 10x150, they are gonna be..."
too strong Mr. O ☺️ Bent the screwdriver, what in the thunder lol
I did the same repair on my Dad's 1992 Olds Cutlass Ciera about 3 years ago...car still runs fine.
👍
Mom had a 93 with the 3.3... only issue it ate 3 water pumps in 13 years.. then to a grand am GT that was horrid in PA snow. Now she has the 2014 Subaru OB 3.6 that goes any place all winter. It Just eats head light bulbs every year or so.
Spoken like a true mechanic ( if it's not 10-150 it's gonna be )
I'd use a wire round brush bottle brush I call them and a drill before I start tapping stuff have a good day
I had a 1999 Chevrolet Venture van. About 5 years ago I had just gotten home and backed into my parking spot and right before I shut off the engine there was a banging noise under the hood. When I looked I found that the pulley part of the harmonic balancer had come completely off the inner part and had bounced around next to the engine. But there was no squealing, no odd noises or anything before it happened, it just separated. And just a few minuted before that happened I had been driving down the freeway at 60 MPH.
As inconvenient as it was, there is no telling what damage would have happened with the engine running at freeway speed RPMs.
I always put a thin layer of RTV around the O.D. of a lip seal before installation. This serves two purposes: The first is that it fills any scrapes or gouges in the bore and prevents leaks, and the second is that it provides a bit of lubricating effect when fresh, easing installation somewhat.
A little maintenance adds years to the life -
Mr owe you you got the tricks you know the you got the smarts take care and keep them rolling them doggies
I have this exact same car, only difference is my Century is an 05. I wanted to replace my own serp belt on it (it also has the original OEM GM belt) and now I have a video from SMA doing just that! Sweet!
Had the 2.8 in an old Buick Century.
Was my winter beater.
Check the gas and fill the oil.
Never let me down though.
A combination wrench....on SMA?? NO WAY!!!😁
20 years ago i was a new mechanic. had one of these vehicles in the bay. I Had just bought a new padded handle 1/4 drive snap on ratchet on truck credit for way too much money. had placed it on the right hand fender wile engine was idling. it rattled a bit and fell into the engine bay as I watched in horror hesitant to try to catch it as it was on a path into the accessory drive. the bulky ratchet handle landed on the serp belt between AC comp and balancer and was instantly sucked by the belt into the spinning balancer. wile cringing and mumbling “shit” there was a bang and the motor stopped as if it had a race clutch that had been side steeped wile idling. the ratchet handle slammed the tensioner full lock as it went between belt and balancer getting maybe 2” into the rotation. it remained there and to my surprise did not even throw the belt out of a single grove anywhere. belt was guitar string tight and it took some effort with a breaker bar to turn crank backwards to free my prized new snap on tool free. there was slight damage to the belt and i think i replaced it. I still have the ratchet to this day with the original handle grip and it’s scar from the balancer having bitten it. I left auto repair 4 years ago. every time i reach for that tool i have a strong memory of it happening. never told this story before. i was not noticed having made this mistake and kept it from others in shop including my boss at the time as i was super embarrassed.
thanks for recording and your welcome
Don't forget to check that tensioner (idler) pulley. those things go bad all the time on those engines
So satisfying to watch a project to full completion
Good quick video ON a old Buick century Eric O sub frame bolt missing not good @South Main Auto Repair LLC
The outer ring separated on my little 3 cylinder Daihatsu crank pulley throwing off my fan belt. Couldn't find a part anywhere so we took it off, cleaned off the rubber and welded the outer ring on as true as we could. Been fine for 10,000 miles. I wouldn't recommend it though on something bigger lol, theres rubber in it for a reason, it just doesn't always last 22 years lol. Great video Mr O. :D
Hey Mr! My car wasn't making that knocking sound when I brought it here to get the squeak fixed! 🤔
I had one of those balancers outer hub spin on the inner hub part without a wobble. Car ran great until until it went into closed loop. Wouldn't get out of it's own way after that. It took a "minute" as they say now to figure that one out.
Years ago my son and I we used to race a 76 Z28 with a stroker motor and the harmonic balancer come loose and broke the bolt off used a left-handed drill to drill it spun out of there I got very lucky it was a spooky job put it back in and we're good to go have a good day thanks for everything Eric bye
Hi Eric thanks for the chuckle "needs a bit on top corner " when installing the crank seal there are no corners on a circle unless you know different, yet we all say it love work lol to ALL the family stay safe. NZ
Eric, people in your area are very lucky to have a tech as good as you .
You cleaned all the protection oil / grease off. Its going to rust now. Gotta love the rust belt. ha
NICE JOB
"If they're not 10/150 they're gonna be" 😆
I have a 3400 gm. The pulley removed itself😂
Hell that belt needed ' oil of ulay,' skin cream :-D
Enjoyed the video as always but missed the customary announcement when using brake clean. Educational and fun, thanks you always deliver
Seeing as how old the belt is you should check the tensioner pulley. There’s prolly no grease in it anymore. Check the water pump for play too.
Experience has made you incredibly efficient. I've never seen anyone remove a tire as fast as you did just now.
Nice repair job. Good for many more miles and no leaks. Oh ya the CV boot.
