- How to grow Patty Pan Squash in containers - scallop squash
Hello fellow plant growers, gardeners and everyone who has stumbled upon this video :) Todays I am sharing with you my "growing patty pan squash in containers".
I wanted to find out if it's possible to grow some summer squash in small containers with getting at least average results. And it definitely is! Even on balcony 🌱

Great info. You're the only youtube I found focusing on patty pans in containers. I subscribed
Thank you very much 😊
I grew patty pans in containers for a couple of years, but this year I put them in the ground. They have gone absolutely crazy. For sure the most productive squash I've ever grown.
They are far more productive growing in ground rather than in containers. This is an idea if you don't have a garden, you can still get some in containers 🙂
Oh for sure, and how great it is that you're showing people how to garden in containers. It's awesome. I was just sharing what I'm experiencing.
Do they climb or doesn't need any support?
That squash plant did look great 👍. I have never grown patty pan squash, Nice video!
Thank you for feedback 😊 You should try it 😋 I grow at least few every year.
I discovered manual (hand) pollination a couple of years and it drastically increased yield of patty pans. Taking the male organ and rubbing it on the female organ yielded a fruit almost 100% successfully. For whatever reason, leaving pollination strictly to the bees, doesn't work as well with patty pans in my experience.
Clear, concise and not a lot of filler. I appreciate that in a good tutorial video. I have Pattys growing right now & Im glad I watched your video. I almost mistakenly took them outside to start hardening off. Now I will keep them inside in the grow tent instead of accidentally killing them in 90F weather 😬
Thank You very much :) I am happy You find the video helpful!
Thanks for sharing your video! Your garden is beautiful. I’m a gardener too and I’m researching all the things I can grow in containers. I’m happy it led me to find you. I’m so happy it did your channel has so much to offer! This is very helpful. Thanks for teaching me something new. I hope we can learn more from each other as we grow our gardens and our channels!
I have mobility problems so grow everything in pots. Have ordered golden yellow PP now I have seen your video. Thanks so much - very excited
Two years ago I grew yellow ones in containers too 🙂
Thank you and Good luck!
An enjoyable and helpful video. I also like to eat patty pan squash. Thanks.
Thank you for watching 🙂
I ate patty pan squash for the first time this week. YUM! Already ordered seeds to try growing next summer.
Good sharing about seed to harvesting of squash, let us stay connected and grow together
Thank you 🙏 ok 👍
Just L and S to you as well, love to support you because you put so much afford into your video..will stay connect.
Thank you 🙏
I enjoy this video as well because I wasn't able to find anyone else on CZcams with a video for this specific squash&growing it in a container.
Thank you very much, I am glad you do! 🙂
very nicely done
Thank you 🙂
This is great i love being able to see what others have to say , and i just need to double check to see if i am doing things right. Like cross pollinating, i use a tiny paint brush and use it on my starwberries. I never thought of just rubbing the patty pan suash flowers directly on male to female.
Hello, well when I grow dozens of squash plants, it's time saving to pinch of one or two male flowers and pollinate the whole group of plants. 🙂
Very nice video please send more videos in pot ❤
Thank You very much ☺️
Working on them 🌱🍀
Great information shared 👌
Thank you for feedback 🍀
Very helpful video. Plan to try this next year.
Thank you and Good luck! 🙂

Nice sharing..
Thank you 🍀
I just ordered some seeds to try this.
Sounds great! Good luck! 🍀🌱
Looks really interesting
Does it? 😅 patty pans can sometimes grow to interesting shapes though 🤪
@@Liap I have never grow that, I should try.
@@leonsgarden4053 Definitely, good luck 🍀
This was only my second year for vegetable farming. Have not tried squash yet. Plan on trying a zucchini next summer if nothing happens. Thank you.
Thank you for your feedback Sara 🙂 Good luck growing 🍀
I tried Zinnias for the first time this year - FELL IN LOVE. Plan to fill the yard next year.
@@nancydb1390 Glad you enjoyed them.

This is Great I Justin search this I click your channel
Thank you 🙂
I hope you saved seeds I’d love to see a video from saved seeds
I have a question. What is the size of the pot
Roughly 10 liters
How tall is the plant growing? I want to know if they climb or don't need any support. Thank you in advance for your response and help!
Hello, patty pans don't climb and don't need any support. They grow around 50-60cm in height (20-24in) and can grow 120cm (4ft) wide, even more!
@@Liap Thank you very much! I forgot to ask: Can I plant the seeds directly into the ground outside? Thank you again! ❤
@@gabrielac1954 Yes you can 🙂 if the temperatures allow that.
@@Liap Thank you soooo much! You are the best!
Do you have to have 2 or more plants for pollination? Will it be okay if I just have one plant?
Yes it will be okay, the plant will have both, male and female flowers.
I'm trying these for the first time&I have them in a 4 gallon container..there are 4 stalks that produced. Should I repot the whole thing or place separate stalks in separate containers.
I would transplant them separately to containers 👍
@@Liap Will do and thank u.
Why are you seeds blue? Is it because they are not organic and instead pre-treated seeds? That would more than likely affect the germination process.
So, those using organic seeds may not expect same results...but will have organic food to eat in the end if they follow the organic method of growing food.
Hello, yes these were pre-treated seeds, Against fungal diseases that could harm the seedlings.
There are some varieties that I can only get from one seed seller, and if they are pre-treated, there is not much I can do about it. Though I am not making a big deal out of that. I mean If I have an option I buy regular non pre-treated seeds, but If they are the only option at the time, I can deal with that 🙂
What inch pot sir?
The pot is just over 10 liter size.
Can I grow them from seed in July? Is it too late to try?
Hello, what climate are You in and what is the first frost date there?
These plants need warm air and soil temperature.
@@Liap I'm in the UK, it's summer (warm and wet) and they should have been planted last month. They will have to grow in the greenhouse, I could put containers outside o guess, but I have 4 dogs and there are pigeons and the slugs will get them wherever they are.
@@carolvile5584 Well, I am not sure how much of the fruit You will be able to get until cold weather sets in. Even if You could prolong their growing season by taking them in the greenhouse, when days get shorter, squashes don't grow as well. They are sun and warmth loving plants 🌞
I mean, You definitely can try and see how much can You get from them, but don't expect too much.
I tried to grow winter squash last year from second half of July and it just didn't grow well, August rainy weather and Spetember cold mornings... I harvested only one fruit, and even that one was not full size.
If You want to try it, go for it. If You want to make sure You have yield of some kind, I'd grow something else, that You know You can still get nice harvest from 🙂
Good Luck! 🍀
@@Liap thank you. The main reason I wanted to grow them is my diet is very limited and FODMAPs are a big problem, patty pan squash are very low FODMAP and I probably could eat them. Normally I grow tomatoes as the only thing the slugs don't eat, I haven't tried eating any this year, it's something that I need to test.
@@carolvile5584 In that case, I think You've just answered Yourself. Go for it 🙂 Health is always worth a try. If I may suggest, also plant some early zucchini variety. Some early cultivars can produce first fruit 7 weeks after planting, so in greenhouse You could still get few harvests.
Puting seeds in paper towels is a waist of seeds and time they would grow faster in a small dirt tray just stick them in pointy way down they shoot out of the dirt in less than a week
I would like to kindly disagree. Ofcourse you can just put the seeds into growing medium, but paper towel method will always be faster. Atleast that’s how it worked for me when I was comparing both methods. And if you use H2O2 paper towel method will be even faster due to easier access to oxygen. Another advantage of this method is that you have overall overview whether the seeds are germinating (especially when using old seeds) and this gives you advantage to replace the seeds or choose the ones with the strongest roots. When you put them in soil, you don’t see any od this. I grow a lot of plants, sometimes I use this method sometimes I don’t. It is personal preference and definitely not a waste of time and absolutely not waste of seeds. Also, some seeds are prone to rot in soil, that is also a time to shine for paper towel method. Thank you for Your feedback and opinion 🙂
There is more nutrients in dirt and space for the roots to and u even proved it's more waist full because u don't grow all the seeds if u grow more than one plant u u would want to just put them in dirt
@@petedonaghue5849 seeds don’t need nutrients to germinate, they need hydrogen and oxygen. I germinate all the peppers i grow with this method because it cuts the germination time significantly. The smaller the seeds, the better to use paper towel method. I am sure you will find some exceptions, but i tried this so many times. If i didn’t why would I still use this method? Why don’t I use it for all the seeds I grow? Because some seeds have Good germination rate and time that the difference would be small. But I still do from time to time, especially when I germinate old seeds that would otherwise rot in soil.
Everything u know is a lie
@@petedonaghue5849 okay 🙂 thank you for Your feedback. Have a Nice day 😉
