Thank you, for the excellent concise and informative video! I am growing scallop squash for the first time and had the very same questions that you answered! Much appreciated since the information was not readily available using “Mr” Google…. Very excited to grow them and add a fun, pretty new veggie to my menu!
Growing in Suffolk County on Long Island, New York zone 7b. Direct Seeded 2 seeds in 4” grow pot in yard late July 2024, both seeds burst through soil in about 5 days! Within a week they are about 4” tall, with true leaves just about to sprout!
Perhaps you could suggest what size container or grow bag should be used. Also, can this squash be grown vertically?
Thanks again, I was happy to like & subscribe!

Thank you so much for your comment. Great to hear that you are growing scallop squash! Yes, they are a fun and cute vegetable. WoW! You are in New York. I live in Florida. Five days was a great germination time!!!
Scallop squash plants, can grow in containers that are at least 10-20 liters in size, or 10-12 inches wide and 10 inches deep. However, some say that a 5-gallon pot can fit one compact bush variety plant, while a 10-gallon pot can fit two plants. Because scallop squash vines can spread 4-6 feet, it's important to give the plants plenty of room to grow.
Yes, you can grow scallop squash vertically using a trellis, tomato cage, or stake:
      Trellis
A simple trellis can be attached to a fence or wall that faces the sun. Plant the squash the same distance apart as they would be at ground level, then gently weave the shoots onto the trellis as they grow.
      Tomato cage
Place a tomato cage over the squash and train it to grow upwards by pruning the lower leaves close to the base of the plant.
      Stake
When the plant is young, place a stake about 4-5 inches from the main stem to avoid cutting any roots. Use a nylon strip or twist tie to loosely tie the plant to the stake as it grows
      I hope this helps.
