      Hopefully people don't make the same mistake I did and try to drill straight through in one direction. I cracked a sheet of glass that way. Its very important with these drill bits to start drilling from both sides.

    This should be called "How NOT to drill glass." Never drill glass dry like this. Dry drilling creates microscopic glass particles in the air which can damage your lungs and eyes. It also makes for a poor quality hole. The easiest method for small parts is to submerge the entire part in a shallow pan of water. You can also use a flood coolant system, or build a 'dam' around the hole using clay or putty and fill it with coolant or water. Using a tiny bit of water from a spray bottle is useless. Use a fixed, medium drill speed according to the bit size; if you go slow as in this video, you will end up with cracked edges like in this video.

      Your suggestion is unworkable in a production glass shop. Submerged in water? Really? Drilling rosette holes in a 42 X 100 inch mirror? A flood system or dam for a small 1/4 inch hole, not needed. The dam system is needed if using grit bits and a tripod drill. Vertical drilling machines use diamond bits and coolant is sprayed through the center of the front and back bits.

      My brain was screaming when he said spray water when there’s dust, that glass powder that becomes airborne and ends up in your lungs…
      Water bath it, or submerge if small enough. I have a hose set up to have a continuous flow of water over the drill/cutting bit, I wear a mask and for larger projects I work outside, I’m a glass sculptor…

      this -- puts you on the fast track to silicosis, which is akin to the pain and agony of prolonged asbestos exposure. i can also confirm that drilling with the entire piece underwater produces complete cooling to all surfaces, eliminates any thermal stress, prolongs the life of the bit, manages dust, and provides for very clean holes

      I have a 50mm Swarovski crystal and I need to drill a hole in it so I can hang it. Any words of wisdom for me?

  • @nunyabidnis5407
    @nunyabidnis5407 Před 3 lety +8

    We used to do this a little differently. To start we just positioned the bit where we wanted the hole and with the help of our thumb we rocked the bit back and forth a little to make a small divit without the drill spinning. Then we drilled at a fairly slow speed after dipping the bit in a mixture of oil and mineral spirits which acts like a combo lube and coolant. I actually preferred a bit with some use on it. It seemed to me that new bits chipped more.

    I've never drilled glass before, however with any other material I've found using the drill at a low speed gets the job done more quickly.
    Fantastic Video. Thankyoh.

      Because in masonry drilling you don't need that much precision.

    • @Pidalin
      @Pidalin Před 6 měsíci

      @@Eden_M Ofcourse it's hard because it's the hardest material, you can't just drill a hole into it. With red bricks, you don't actually drill it, you are hammering it with a drill bit.

      It is already a drill bit for glass and I don't see how it could take only few seconds, because glass is fragile and hard surface. Even professional take time to make this. 🤔
