Those kids got to grow up and tell their friends they were manhandled by Lily Tomlin for a phone company monopoly gag. Lucky.
Sidebar: When Lily hears the child say, "Monopoly", she reaches for something (a prop) that was supposed to be inside her coat: you can watch her fumble inside to find it - then she realizes it's not there......booyah!
Mary Gross was one of the best platoon hitters in SNL history. Put her in the right skit with the right character and she hits the mark. Every time.
Everyone on that version of the show gets ignored except Eddie Murphy and Joe Piscopo. And it even happened to THEM eventually. People don't even connect Julia Louis Dreyfus with it.
@@Oppeldeldoc1 It was nice of you to not ignore Charles Murphy.
They just described Amazon
Hopefully in a year they'll be making the same sketch about Facebook and Google.
Amazon doesn't have a government charter that prevents any other corporation from competing against them, so its not the same.
@@crosstudio They do however employ unethicsl practices that undermine fair market competition, rergadless of govt intervention that could either be beneficial to the economy or not.
Lily's my Girl! Love her! My sister used to love Mary Hartman!!
We laugh now, but I'm old enough to remember when Ma Bell truly had a monopoly on EVERYTHING phone. Local, long distance, hardware. Imagine nowadays if Facebook, Google, Apple and Microsoft were to merge. That'll keep you up at night.
I will stick with "Radio Shack" and "Tandy." That'll show "ma Bell."
Love both Mary and Lily
This sketch came around the time of the AT&T divestiture.
This character to me is still the best!
For historical reference: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Breakup_of_the_Bell_System
Thanks! I had feeling there was a timely reference I was missing. I often wonder what will be over the heads of future generations when they watch SNL episodes of today.
I once ripped my Britches, on a Reefer Fence. Not a "Cheech and Chong" Reefer. The kind of Reefer you might find, on a Boat or in a Roundabout. Yes. Roundabout. Mother worked from 9 to 5, repairing those Britches.
As true now as then, if not moreso.
AT&T isn’t a monopoly anymore. They’re not even the largest cell phone provider
Brilliant on multiple levels!
Bravo Ernestine!
I don't care what critics say: the "Doumanian Years" of SNL remain THE EDGIEST in the show's entire history - this sketch is Exhibit A.
The curly red haired girl appeared in a few other skits in the 80’s.
Was that the couch from Cosby Show?
Mr. "Bell"vedere
and that was one take live! Get to know the master that is Lily Tomlin.
At about the time of the ATT breakup, the phone company charged for lots of stuff. Longer cord? Extra Bought a phone and it actually rang? The phone company charged for an extension bc they provided the electricity to ring the extra bell!
To avoid the "ringer equivalecy charge," you had to disconnect the bell in the phone you bought *_because the phone system detected and reported the extra electricity used to ring the extra bell_*
In this skit, Mary Gross dons a Louise Brooks hairdo.
❤
AT&T is still around
