Thanx so much for posting HUGE MEMORIES!!! Well I was 13 and living in Beresfield and this is one of the biggest memories of childhood, if not my life. My sister had been taken shopping by my aunty to Hamilton! Obviously happening in the days before mobiles so my mother was in a panic as we had heard on the battery operated WIRELESS (yes batteries and a wireless was all was needed to get important news 🤔) that Beaumont st had been hit hard. It took till the afternoon for them to arrive back safely, the biggest thing though was I ruined my brand new sound system pulling it out of the wall as my wardrobe was going to fall on it! 🥺 The community was all out in the street listening to the wireless and supporting each other.
I was 2 1/2 yrs old at the time. I still to this day have memories of the minutes leading up to when the earthquake happened... being a toddler in a building then wasnt fun....
me and my dad were first responders from Carrington 252firestation I got to the station within 10mins rang Newcastle and was turned out to the workers club I had to wait for dad(who was captain) I said get in get dressed n the way "the workers clubs fell down" that seemed to be an understatement from the destruction and loss of life which i witnessed on that day and can never unsee
Crazy to think that,that once little boy PJ, is 2 months older then me. and I agree with what that lady Mary Chamberlain said about it being scary which is why it had stood in her mind for so long. I'd say that'd be the reason it has stayed in my memory bank too.
