Donovan was a great influence too all of us growing up in the 60s and 70s. You know, he’s the guy that talked John, George, Paul and Ringo into going to India and learning to meditate with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. And he was there with them throughout the whole experience. It was during this period that they wrote 48 songs, including much of White Album! David's safe in Your Hands now,our Great Creator of All Things😊🙏
Had the amazing experience of seeing Donovan at the Memorial Auditorium in Sacramento 1973 approx. The very next day went to San Francisco’s Palace of the Fine Arts just to walk around outside in the park like setting. A group of people mostly photographers were walking in my direction and within 10 or so yards Donovan was in the middle. Looking happy and genuine right in front of me. I was 17 than. Now I’m 66. A lifetime experience for me that I’ll always remember.
David had such a shine in his eyes ...a pure spirit, I think we not only mourn the loss of an amazing person, musician , but also the end of an era which represents our youth ....love you David ...rock on !!!!!!!!!!!

Being a Folk Musician in the 60's, 70's, and 80's it was almost imperative to do at least one Donovan song! Growing up in that era all of this makes so much sense! Thanks for posting this. By the way Willy is Graham Nash, his middle name is William.
I see this as, instead of a tribute, more of a warning, or a pleading about the danger of cocaine and to rise above it with his words and music. Unfortunately it took years, jail and a loving wife and family to get him clean. I am so glad he did. I saw him in one of his last shows before the pandemic shut everything down, and his voice was as clear and the music was as good or better than it was 50 years ago. I am glad he kept working and writing, but I guess, what else could he do. That was his life.
This a beautiful heartfelt tune from one lovely guy to another. The "Remember my name" documentary is Croz brutally laying his heart on the line and saying sorry in the most honest way possible. The greatest power available to any loving human being is kindness and forgiveness.

just watched part of the Remember My Name doc last night and learned more about how DC ended up a bit of a pariah with those who were closest. What a shame. If I hadn't seen that I wouldn't have found this, thanks Joey McGowan for posting it, and wouldn't have had the context to better appreciate it. Sometimes it's better to not know the sadder details of public figures and artists - though this piece enhanced my already positive feeling about Donovan.
Like wise I’ve never heard this before. Crosby and Dylan we’re both very gifted yet competitive from my perspective and may have found some of Donovan’s talent a little infringing so their sharp young yes I imagine would have been quick to sting. Beautiful peace offering though. Thanks for sharing this rare treat.
Thanks so much for posting this, Joey I had never heard this before, it's beautiful. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems as though a lot of Donovan's 60's peers left him behind. McCartney did say later on that "Sunny Goodge Street" is one of his favorite songs from that amazing decade.
Joey, thank you for posting this, yet at the same time, it is a bit frustrating. Having met Donovan and been subject of his barbs seems to be since a "Flower to a Garden" his way to treat others, and it's not brilliant. It's the timing I am probably reacting to, but remove the splinter, please and quit yelling about other's beams. ™ was not free of criticism either, btw, but one person's path isn't everyone's path. Knowing the context of this song, when it was written, etc. Helps. It's complicated. Croz was not into freebasing back in 1970 and yes, he was a "complex friend" for many. He admitted he was an addict, he had faults; we all do. Those who stood by him knew how frustrating he could be, yet could be the most generous guy, sensitive and touching. This is my recollection from again, correspondence with him. And while the song is "pretty", it is full of judgmentalism and barbs. I am sort of glad that when I met him in 2011, I didn't know this part of his nature (other than "Ricky Ticky Tavi" alternative ending from his box set "Troubadour" ). We all have faults, we all do what we think allows us live in this life.
It would be interesting to hear David Crosby's reaction to this song. How he felt about it back in 1970 when he first heard it and how his feelings are now about the song? I don't recall ever reading any response from David, be it good, bad or indifferent.
I think Croz barely knew Donovan. Strange that Donovan would write a song about him and drug use that would not be a significant issue for him for another 10 years.
@@ptownscribe1254 How would you know that he barely knew him? Donovan did strike up a friendship with Cass Elliott and wrote a song about her on his Sunshine Superman album. Crosby was part of the same circle in Laurel Canyon, so Donovan quite likely came into contact with him. I'm not saying you're wrong, just wonder what is your evidence that Crosby barely knew him
That was a message from one Leo to another. It was also a warning against drugs that as of he knew that David would be in trouble otherwise. And he did. Music on the wings of a Dove.
Fascinating. Croz has never said much about Donovan one way or another. I'm actually surprised by the cocaine references, as I didn't think that played such a big role in their lives, circa 1969.
@@mark9058 He was not a regular heroin user until many years later, after he started freebasing around 1977. That's what did him in. It's all in his two autobiographies.
@@ptownscribe1254 Well that heroin use data I got from an interview in which David said he was on horse before YTY or thereabouts, this interview was after the two bios. Even if irregular use that was still addiction until he quit drugs in toto.
For those who question whether cocaine was an issue for Croz in 1970, consider that when CSN first got together they briefly considered calling themselves Frozen Noses. In his 1970 Rolling Stone Interview David even talked about irritability caused by "certain substances which we sometimes ingest through our nose" having been a problem towards the end of his Byrds tenure. So I don't think Donovan was just taking a stab in the dark, here.

From the guy who wrote Candyman & sung it in fairly amazing fashion. I just tried a couple basic searches & nothing came up. It's hard to know what this & the images mean outside perhaps the head of the individual who made this. The text is an explicit message against psychedelics and all other recreational drugs, particularly at the rate they were being consumed when these artists were in their prime. Back then, nobody would have been listening. However, many artists came to the realization (about the danger of hard drugs) on their own. Crosby cleaned up & I assume Graham Nash stopped using drugs because he is still out there performing. He never appeared to have a problem with them, but discusses use in his memoir.
It takes a little searching to find the Donovan song but it's out there. It's on Fairytale, the same album that contains his stunning version of Buffy Saint-Marie's Universal Soldier.

Joey, any more info on this?? Definitely sounds like Donovan during the "Open Road" sessions. Wonder what Dave must have said to get this song happening. Thanks for the upload to the universe.
Hi, This was one of a Whopping 56 Demos made at Abbey Road Studios during January and February of 1970. A portion of the Songs would wind up on "Open Road" later that year and a few on later releases. Most however ( like this one) have never been made available.
@@JoeyMcGowan1 , I bet those demos are gold like this one. Are you aware of those Barabajagal demos as well, "Runaway" , "Sweet Beverley", "Marjorie (Margarine), "Little White Flower", etc.?? I feel like that 69/70 period he was really really sharp on his writing and guitar playing, and melodies in general. It's like he was going through a metamorphosis of sorts
@@JoeyMcGowan1 Hi Joey. Thanks so much for your shared knowledge and material on Don! Are the rest (or any of) those 56 demos available somewhere for listening??
I'm gonna guess this is Donovan's response after his trip to see the maharishi with George and all. Crosby's song Laughing is about George's faith in the Maharishi. And I think Donovan's song is a reaction to their visiting the maharishi and David's opinion of that.
I was listening to Steven stills Speak Rather angrily of the troubles with David , mostly obliquely. He said David ruined CSNY and CSN. Here, Donovan Rather Calmly gets to the root of david with a message Directly to David. I for one can imagine David Responding by Telling Donovan to p*** off. I love both of their voices.
Well Stephen, you reap what you sow. He was poaching David while Dave was in the Byrds. Note David sang backup for Buffalo Springfield at Monterey while Neil was AWOL again.

@@uburoi3717 If there wasn't before Donovan released this, I'll bet there was afterwards. Shouldn't think Nash felt much flkattered either!
Wow!
Sounds like heaven
🌹
That was cool...
Donovan the consummate artist.
I'm not saying you're wrong, just wonder what is your evidence that Crosby barely knew him
Sadly we will never know RIP Croz.
@@ptownscribe1254 I also find it a bit odd. Says alot w too many words
@@anthonycrawford9873 Croz was occasionally asked about Donovan on his Twitter feed, and he was generally indifferent or dismissive.
Just FYI, The "Willy" Donovan mentions is Graham Nash, that's his nickname within the CSNY family and friendship network...
Crosby was a hard core addict
@@Light-Shift Not in 1969, he wasn't. He wasn't a "hard core addict" until he started freebasing in 1978.
@@ptownscribe1254 But he was on heroin by 1969. Can't get anymore hard core than that.
😘😘
For those who question whether cocaine was an issue for Croz in 1970, consider that when CSN first got together they briefly considered calling themselves Frozen Noses. In his 1970 Rolling Stone Interview David even talked about irritability caused by "certain substances which we sometimes ingest through our nose" having been a problem towards the end of his Byrds tenure. So I don't think Donovan was just taking a stab in the dark, here.
Maybe i should do an edm version. These lyrics are really saying something even beyond a tribute to david
BOTH DEES... BEAUTIES
Beautiful, never heard this, what album is it from please? Thanks in advance!

I must admit I have never heard this song before. And I have been a lifelong fan of Donovan. Is this available somewhere beside CZcams? Love them both, Don and Croz.
Apparently it’s a demo.
If you can find the "Old Fashioned Picture Book" bootleg, this is the song listed as "I Spoke With Willie."
GREAT be leaving in cupple days driving up to caliy , do you know anyone who mightwant a ride
Donovan (Song for David Crosby) - 1970
I’m writing this song with shapes that you know rhyming along hoping to show there’s no mystery between you and me. I’m not how you see .
Through eating the snow your receiver is numb, you imagine signals when the sender is mum. There’s no mystery between you and me. I’m not how you see.
We play with words we use them so well. So I’m sending these birds with a message to tell there’s no mystery between you and me.
I send you love Davy..I share your love of the sea and her mystery and her secrecy .The sound in your strings is the wind in the cloth. I’m simple as salt in a vegetable broth.
Your imaginings fly on cocaine wings, the gloomy doom bell rings.Could it be that the drugs make us to doubt our friends ? And what’s worse than that , to doubt our own finds. Do you get my point ?. Even one wee joint makes us self destroyed,
I now know the way to the natural high, which is soft as the cloud rides the early day sky. Not only mentally but physically. I can feel high and free , any time legally.
“ I spoke with Willy (Graham Nash) about a very fine thing, about how we can heal , with the way that we sing,” Jast (John Sebastian) he said to me, although sweet Joni (Mitchell) looked on doubtfully. She knew Willy was easily led, " But I don’t want his head I’ll take his ears instead."
I wanted to speak with you and Stephen(Stills) about the very same thing but it was too near leaving. I wanted to tell Joan (Baez) sing him this song but he must sing along.
Vibrations of love from deep within you await to surface. They long to pour through .You don’t need a mask or an acid cask.
You’re a poet turn the tide. I need some more talks to tell, cause to tell it well I’ll need your eyes as well. Hello to Dallas (Taylor) the happy wee elf. Hoping that Neil (Young) is his groovy . Lick self from mi'maid and me and the wee baby. Hoping soon to see Mr. David Crosby
( May be some mistakes - )
Memoirs of a lost generation. I pity notoriety; there is so much inequity in it all, and at the end of the day, it is just not real. Don't fall for pretensions, and turn away from them before they allure you with their falsehoods.
@@Michael69 Hi, I have Three full CDR's of these sessions. Forward your Email address & I'll try to get them to you.
@@JoeyMcGowan1 moh_moh_kid @ hotmail.com. Thanks so very much!!
That should read “sharp tongue”
What could be the reason that Donovan wrote this song about Crosby?
John wuz johnny Barbeta , x Turtles drummer ?
Think it's John Sebastian (Lovin' Spoonful)
Wow, 1970, long before Crosby's drug abuse became the stuff of legend!
Did Crosby ever react to the song?
1970??!! Was it ever on an album?!
