"I'm the ninja consultant of the decepticons!" - Sixshot 1987
Truly he must be in high demand
“Now that you know who I am, look out!”
I've never been clear on something: Does he consult the Decepticons on ninjas *specifically* or is he a ninja who serves as a general consultant for the Decepticons?
@@chaoticjusticezero Yes

When I was too young to read full sentences properly I used to think that the cover to #5 said "ALL ARE DEAD" and didn't get that Shockwave was amending the title. Like he was just leaving a message to make it perfectly clear he left no survivors.
My favorite Furmanism: "Let's give him the worst case of indigestion... that he's ever had!"
The irony of the Decepticons building a car wash, a facility that washes things, and sending it to Earth only for it get infected by a disease that can be cured by water, and having them not know what water is.
Might be because cybertronian as a whole can't grasp the concept that our organic cleaning solvent and internal catalyst is the same thing and not a hydrocarbon. They probably treat water the same way we treat sulfuric or hydrochloric acid
It’s called a kink! Think about it. To a transforming robot, a car going through a tunnel, soaking every inch of the surface in water and soap, that is kind of kinky to a robot, like the robot equivalent of a wet T shirt. And no I’m not sorry for this

It has only now occurred to me that these all in one videos are basically syndication packages for Atop the Fourth Wall.
Or trade paperback collections!
In this instance we can argue it’s a combiner.

49:33 Well you have to acknowledge the floppy disk's accomplishment of being able to store a Transformer's Spark within such low capacity.
Isn't computer science the technique of fitting as much data as possible into as small a space as possible?
Not sure if it makes the plot point any less silly, but it's an impressive piece of technobabble if you need it.
I was gonna I can buy Optimus fitting on a floppy disk, more in the sense of cybertronians Minds being like hyper optimized so they don't have to have him in like what, 64 floppies, 512?
It's funnier knowing Transformers: Battle To Save The Earth (The 2nd of two Transformers games made for the Commodore 64) was in fact released on a five and a quarter inch floppy disk.
I guess the Avengers used Superman's philosophy when it came to the Deceptions: That problem is over there, and over there has to take care of it's own problems.
I hope that Lewis sees your comment
If that's the case, then the Avengers and SHIELD dropped the ball hard considering Megatron nuked Earth in Regeneration One. Then again, apparently, Masetro/Evil Hulk's future started from a nuclear war as well...

What has science done?!
Actually because they already have enough tie ins to deal with
“YOU SHOT ME IN THE FACE!!”
Always my favorite part. 😂
One thing that I think should not be understated is that as sparsely as certain characters in these books were focused on, they were ALL characters. Budiansky and others wrote profiles for each character, every toy that came out. Every last one has a personality, feelings, motives, etc. We just didn’t get to see them all
7:49 love the gamera reference!! Bravo lad bravo!!!
Especially since gammera is a cyborg or a robot
The Rachetron jokes will never cease to amuse me.
3:16 Rodimus was post-movie: Coming into the movie (circa 1985), Galvatron and Magnus were pushed as "the new leaders" and got a fair amount of pre-movie animosity going.
Megascream: GALVATRON HAS FALLEN I *MEGASCREAM* IS YOUR NEW LEADER
Lewis is the kind of guy I would love to hang out with after getting my weekly comics and talk about comics late into the night. 🙂
Holy crap I only now realize how great Linkara's Megatron voice is. He is _really_ good at voice work.
You say that, but I actually find my Megatron fairly weak. It's hard to maintain that level of raspiness while still being clear.
Thank you for the compliment, though! =)
@@AT4W Everyone is their own worse critic. But I always do love your voices. Whether it's great acting or not is a whole different story. 😆
@@Pikachu2Ash agreed😊
@@AT4W Honestly, I liked your Starscream voice more.
"Wait, Earth is a Transformer?!"
"...Has that ever happened in this franchise?"
In the Transformers Prime continuity, the Earth is literally Unicron
Not only that, Beast Wars II had an Earth Transformer called Gaia
@@ssj4jason737 Earth was called Gaia but wasn't a Transformer, it was in the Shattered Glass continuity though.
Theres also at least 1 comic series (forget the name) that had the earth revealed as primus’ sister gia.
aLL of this BS you kids just listed above, I have absolutely no respect for whatsoever. Lol You can shovel it up to your stinky end, very, very deep! 😂
@@TAURON85 what the fuck are you talking about?
I think unicron being frighteningly large, even for Shockwave is fascinating
Shockwave also freaked out over Unicron in Transformers Prime, though that time it was due to Unicron raising an army of the undead.
The first issue said Cybertron was roughly the size of Saturn. That means Unicron's planet mode is of comparable size, if not slightly larger. to be able to eat it.
Now have Saturn transform itself into an anthropomorphic shape. It could hold Earth, quite literally, in the palm of its hand.
Given that Unicron is the manifestation and harbinger of death and destruction, war and strife, hunger, the darkest parts of the psyche... It makes sense that he would be so imposing and terrifyingly massive. Unicron is basically robot Satan, the reverse of Primus's robot God.
,,☹️😛🥲🥲🥲😚❤️@@Shadethewolfy. . .
@@barachiel212Depending on the continuity, Unicron is either a little bigger or smaller than Cybertron, the size of Earth, or bigger than Jupiter
In the UK run there were a lot of secondary/back-up stories that cover since of the plot holes Linkara picks up on such as where Megatron gets Starscream’s body for the pretender storyline.
You also get Time Wars which is Transformers’ first dabble with a multiverse.
You mentioned that Devastator is essentially a Megazord, which I find funny since, whenever I read fanfiction of Transformers crossing over with Power Rangers in some capacity, the first thing people think of is the Megazord (or Thunderzord in one case) fighting Devastator. Heck, Renegade Game Studios, the makers of the Power Rangers and Transformers Tabletop RPGs are releasing a supplement book later this year that has the Megazord fighting Devastator on the cover!
I wonder if the scene from All Hail Megatron where he allows the humans to shoot at the Decepticons to as a terror tactic was inspired by the scene from the Marvel comics.
Almost definitely. There's a lot of intertextuality with this in idw stuff.
After watching this series for the umpteenth time, it only now truly hits me that seeing the multiversal Rodimus teamup at 3:27:15 is the closest we'll ever likely get to seeing More Than Meets the Eye on AT4W.
9:50 Well to his credit, he didn't know Megatron's legacy still lived on with Beast Megatron. He had every intention of backstabbing the Maximals from the start too, it's just his original plan involved killing the Predacons first.
Tho og Megatron wanted it to be a crocodile
How I would modify the Pretenders is that the Autobots implant their shells with size changing devices and use them to better interact with humanity while the Decepticons choose monsters for intimidation and only have one or two (say, Stranglehold and Starscream) equipped to hide among humans
Also, I’ve always interpreted Pretender tech as the precursor to the ability to mimic organic life that the Beast Wars characters have
Funny, you should mention that. Apparently, in the Japanese continuity, pretenders could change their size to fit disguises.
@@johnnygyro2295 yeah, that’s what I was basing it on, the way they work in Masterforce, which allowed Metalhawk and co to blend in with humans far better than the endearingly goofy execution of the concept in the marvel comics (and which version the toy range itself was going for is anyone’s guess)
Fun Fact: Takara (pronounced "Ta-ka-ra") would later go on to create Beyblades and fuse with their rival company Tomy to create Takara Tomy.
I actually started reading this series because of this retrospective
Nice.
I hope you enjoy it.
This was a hell of a ride but I enjoyed every minute of it.
Thanks Lewis, Till All Are One.
It was only a few days ago I was like "when will the compiled version of the Transformers retrospective be a thing?" and my wishes were answered.
I do love how this retrospective really put me on a path to go deep into Transformers beyond G1 and the Bayverse. The rabbit hole down the convoluted Japanese G1 Transformers continuity was certainly something because of how much Takara got screwed over for wanting to do their own thing... or having an oddly horny phase every now and then.
The Dear TSF Frieza bit now just makes me wanna see a Transformers crossover with Dragon Ball!
Hilariously enough. My thoughts on making it so Buster and his girlfriend perished in the car wash of doom can be summed up with this TFS Frieza line "That's stupid. You're stupid. Stop being stupid"
I did not expect to leave this retrospect shipping Regeneration One Starscream and Shockwave.
My favorite retrospective? All in one? Hell yeah!
One could say it’s a combiner retrospective.
Till all are one.
I'd love to hear about the UK comics someday. Quite a few classic comics there
The UK two-parter that appeared late in the US series isn't really typical of the UK issues. They came out monthly also, in between the US comics which also ran there. This meant they were continuing the same ongoing story as the US comics, but in the form of "B" plots and "meanwhiles". They couldn't upend what was happening in the US comics but they could flesh it out and show it from other points of view. If the US comic that month took place on Cybertron the UK comic would likely take place on earth and vice versa.
You are perfect as you are linkara. Your comic reviews are hilarious but informative ☺️
Had the original retrospective on standby, perfect timing!
Also adding that Generation Two is so weird artwise. Like, Transformers drawn with pouches, belts, big, goofy guns, and GIANT FREAKING NECK MUSCLES. (Or at least, something resembling that) That’s a thing that exists. Someone thought that was a good idea.
Transformers is bonkers sometimes.
@@chocolattemocha8512 The 90s were a frightening time. The ravenous mass that was Liefled's style had its tendrils everywhere.
HEY I was literally JUST doing a rewatch of this series! I hadn't finished Generation 2 yet, so this is great timing!
I wake up and suddenly I'm listening to Linkara talk about transformers. I'd say that's a neat thing to wake up to
"The Carwash of Doom" was actually not the worst issue. I reserve that for issue 55, where one of the micromasters has to wrestle a human in a "duel to the DEATH".
Nah I’d argue it’s 33-34 since it brought the ongoing story to a screeching halt.
As a massive transformers fan and collector this is one of the best things that you’ve done as someone who grew up with beast wars and Armada but have parents who watch the G1 cartoon and read the Marvel comic book that always made me interested in intrigued on how it all began Which had me look for episodes of the original cartoon and read my dad’s old comic books
Great to see a long video talking about Marvel Transformers and to end this with some wise words from Optimus: Amazing. A booby trap that actually catches boobies
And also... Bud Light is awesome!
These Transformers comics are hilarious especially the Starscream power trip during the Power masters storyline
Hell yeah another compilation! I see these as a kind of "special edition" of the original run as it features the same OLD goodness and new hotness in the form of the new end credit text that, instead of just being the original, is new and has new jokes or insights.
Really enjoyed this retrospective. Thanks for all the work on it. The Marvel Comics continuity remains my favorite of all in the Transformers saga.
I love marvel's transformers comics they are tons of fun and also I never knew transformers did there own version of the multiverse because that sounds really awesome and tons of fun, also I still wished that beast wars characters crossed over with the g1 characters interacted with them in there prime because that could've been really awesome and tons of fun at least in my opinion.
38:51 The "Literally a bridge" idea would be reused a few times, most notably in RID2001 which had a global spacebridge network on Earth (which technically be earthbridges, not spacebridges), maintained by the -Constructibots- Build Team who can combine into -Renovator- Landfill..
56:18 "Where does that thing go when he transforms?"
"It's a suppository."
I've already seen all these episodes so I am not going to watch this, I just came here to give you a like and view for support
3:22:11 Ah, the Hub Network. That gives me good memories. Oh how much I loved watching Transformers Prime Alf & MLP all at once.
Ravage actually talks in either Episode 1 or 2 of the G1 cartoon I can't remember. But he also talks a lot in Beast Wars.
Great job on transformers retrospective and honestly I thought this retrospective was freaking fantastic.
I’ve been watching atop the fourth wall for a good while now…it’s actually what got me into comics and what ultimately set me down on the path to becoming an inspiring writer/author…especially the feature length skits and full length retrospectives, so thanks Linkara 👍😊👍
This was actually the only comic series I ever collected as a kid- which I was a kid perfectly in time for.
Aah, Marvel, the superior Transformers G1 experience. Nice to have these all packaged together in one video!
"You lack imagination decepticon" As a transformers fan, I can say the people who think reflector should be three characters instead of one mind controlling three bodies lack imagination as well.
back in the 80's i used to watch & play with the transformers as a kid. i even bought the comic's back when they were 65 cent's. i still have all of my transformers comic's still to this day.
Loved watching these during their premiere and here as a compilation.
I never read much of the comics as a kid, only watching beast wars on tv and G1 on VHS, but when i did get to the comics, it was something seeing how different it was in its story.
Dang, as someone born in 2004, the old web stuff is crazy to me
The guy who drew issue 7, William Johnson (I cheated and looked it up) had this fluid Neil Adams kind of vibe but had this style of drawing the Transformers that was just MILES better than most of the Marvel journeymen of the day who drew most of the issues. Thanks for reminding me of this treasured memory.
Transformers was originated by Takara of Diaclone and Microman toys at that time. Optimus Prime was from Battle Convoy Diaclone
and Megatron was Gun Robo from Microman, but i had those toys long time ago.
Amazingly, since these aired, i have issues 2-47 of marvelformers all from flea markets. Can't wait to complete the entire 4 issue limited series.
yay! thank you once again, sir! you are very kind! perfect for trying to make my next cosplay gauntlets!
Ngl, Soundwave is probably the best cybertronian because of his voice. He's the only one that sounds like that, and he sounds like he knows what he's doing.
Oh, my word. The details you are finding, and the wit you are sharing. Thank you for this excellent material!
Oh, and you NEED to be cast as Starscream!
So something interesting about Unicron and Primus' origins: In the Universe continuity of comics, they were originally one being named Unicron, who was created by The One to oversee a fledgling universe but all he wanted to do was destroy, so The One split Unicron into two beings: one of creation and one of destruction, to keep Chaos in balance. These two beings were Primus and, of course, Unicron. Throughout the ages they fought, until eventually Primus tricked Unicron into sealing his Spark in an asteroid, with Primus doing the same as part of the trick. As stated in the Marvel continuity, Primus terraforms his asteroid into Cybertron, while Unicron terraforms his own asteroid into the world-eating planet.
Something else that's interesting about the Universe comics... in Revelations Part 3, part of the Balancing Act storyline, Unicron breaks free of the Unicron Singularity and sends his Spark to the nearby(*) planet of Yst. His very presence drives the entire planet absolutely insane and the entire species wipes itself out.
Short of it is that Unicron is ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING.
(* == okay so it was 700 light years from the Singularity)
I loved these videos when they came out. Glad to see them in collected format! Hope you can cover Death’s Head some day. (I always imagined him with something similar to David Kaye’s Megatron voice.)
The classic starscream impression is probably the best I've ever heard
Hey linkara your a extremely top tier review to me keep up with the good work.
So I literally didn't know anything about transformer lore until this video. And I love the fact that you did voices and the wrestling bit was awesome 😅😂😂
Was actually about to go to the playlist then you uploaded this
Damn i have 3-4 of these comics and I thought it was the end, didn't know there we like 80 of them. I would've never finished the series
1:32:28 Always took it as that being the idea, but it's Megatron holding him back that honed him.
KUDOS for the wrestling challenge around 1 hr 40 mins. Made me laugh. Also your Starscream voice great.
Without the TFUK material this is only one small portion of the story.
I noticed they said Cybertron was "Saturn sized" - do they understand how friggin huge that is?
You understand how big the transformers are?
2:25:00 seeing you fly that toy plane made me smile hard enough i felt like commenting about it
Marvel Optimus is like goku and Leomon, he just keeps DYING
1:45:19 And now in Earthspark, we have the first _properly_ non-binary transformer.
Weird it took this long and an earth-born transformer for that to happen frankly. Also their name is Nightshade. Which funnily enough, is also the name of an unreleased member of the Botbots, Hasbro's belated answer to Shopkins and the second most recent cartoon.
Still can't quite get over that every individual picture ever taken of my cat apparently contains more information that Optimus Prime's entire brain...
She is a very good cat, though.
Linkara is one of my favorite internet reviewers of all time.
50:48 Ha look I guess Darkseid isn't the only guy that enjoys good furniture look at Megatrons recliner made of smashed up cars
Famous Linkarism: “After All….”
This video is definitely more than meets the eye.
3:14:48 Also Hot Shot from Armada and an unused Battlestars Rodimus Convoy (which Ask Vector Prime called Duke Fire (after the Brave Police J-Decker character with a similar transformation scheme) but the concept called New Rodimus) for some reason as well as toy-exclusives like Micromaster Hot Rod (bottom left, you can tell because he's the smallest).
once again a reminder: YES, in one of the cartoons, earth is indeed, a transformer. I won't spoil which for either, cause that reveal is amazing, and I'd love more people to go in blind
I see Marvel Shockwave knows the art of breaking the forth wall. Also find it HILARIOUS that his message was referenced in Heroes in Crisis (Update. And now I can imagine older readers who saw the movie comparing the demises and finding it bad because in the movie Optimus at least went down fighting)
Glad I base my Transformers lore on the cartoon and not the comics… What a mess of stories and characters! 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Absolutely nuts!
"The Earth is a Transformer?"
According to Transformers: Prime, yes. The Earth is Unicron.
I feel like the "optimus kills himself because NPCs got hurt" would have had more weight if it wasn't a game, if Optimus made a choice that allowed innocent people to be harmed.
I consider the original 80 issues (along with all of the miniseries like the headmasters etc)MY transformers. I’ve been collecting the transformers classics reprints by idw,and it’s some of the best transformers content I’ve experienced in years. My favourite continuity by far. As far as continuations go… g2 is terrible, but I don’t like the direction regeneration 1 took with things either. So just the original 80 for me told an absolutely amazing story, and impact how I see most of the characters in general. I’ve got volumes 1-5 and volume 7 of transformers classics and I’m looking to get vol.6 and 8 soon. I’m also considering starting to collect the uk issues.
Thank you!
Linkara superior.
We've had better than a Transformers/Godzilla crossover. We've had a Power Rangers/Godzilla crossover.
48:35
Megatron be like "EYEEE-HE-HE-HEEEEE" lmao
As to Ravage and other animation-silent characters talking in comics, there is precedent for it: Road Runner/Coyote, Tom and Jerry (and Itchy/Scratchy in Bongo Simpsons books) and many others who live by gesture and facial movement in the cartoons were made chatty by their comics' counterparts, in Coyote's case far exceeding his brief turns in the old shorts. Similarly, given the difficulty of conveying 'Duck Talk', Donald, and in the old days his nephews, were made utterly comprehensible when in books or strips. Grimlock here was an oddity, as noted, shifting from coherence to 'Me, Grimlock' AFTER being made leader, something I don't think the animated team would have even contemplated.
Will these more than meet the eye?
They will be marvel than meets the eye.
Yes
All hail linkara prime of comics
Gotta do some of the UK storylines like Target 2006 which were amazing, which explains your question about Galvatron's ruined future.
It's because Simon wrote those storylines and brought them into US continuity.
That was _Octopunch_ (His inner robot separated from his Pretender shell, which looks a little like Bludgeon tbf) who shot Grimlock in the back & accidentally awakened Primus.
3:14:48 Ngl I kinda hate that Linkara just casually mentions the fact that Hot Rod came across different versions of himself from other Transformers continuities.
As THEE Geewun fan, you have performed a satisfactory review of the Marvel series, with extra kudos for calling out that IDW/Furman '84 homicidaltron, Optimus. That was total rubbish!
Great work!
2:04:16 Seems like Prime forgot that there's two different factions of Decepticons that they know of. There's a third they don't know of that would further complicate matters but just the fact there's already two makes this an even stupider plan.
“The HUB Network” funny
