  • A few years ago, Bose were the unquestioned king of active noise cancellation in headphones. Then Sony came along and challenged them to an ANC challenge. Now in its third generation, the Sony WH-1000XM3 wins our coveted 5/5 - Ced says that they're the best noise-cancelling headphones ever made, and here's why!

    Based on your review I ordered a pair of these. For years I have been an enthusiastic fan of the Bose headphones, and have nearly worn them out anyway (physically-the plastic bands around each headphone has expanded and corrugated). Mind you, I use my headphones every night for around 4-5 hours, listening to music while my wife watches television. To be fair to Bose, I was not using the noise cancelling model (AE2 SoundLink) and was very happy with them. The Sony delivery arrived this afternoon and I was excited to find out (1) How the sound quality compared and (2) How well the noise cancelling design worked. After charging the batteries ( took about 2 hours ) I switched on and paired them with my Macbook Pro. I was delighted to find that there were no problems doing that, but was not ready for the incredible performance. I must say that the sound quality is outstanding, but the noise cancelling was nothing short of unbelievable. I have to say, Sony, that I am very impressed. My buy price here in Australia was $498.00 delivered .

    Love the sound signature of Sony M3's but the most amazing feature for me is the ability to adjust the cabin pressure during flights when reaching high altitudes and when landing, by activating the atmospheric optimizer of the headphone. I had used it for a couple of international flights and the pain of cabin pressure on my ears, immediately goes away. It's so helpful for travelers like me.

    • @pfarreller
      @pfarreller Před 5 lety

      Hi, I also suffer with that "pain" from cabin pressure when flying, it seems to happen me only about 15 before landing, I've tried few things bit nothing, unfortunately, worked. Just wondering do you suffer from constant ear pain, or like myself is it just a few minutes before landing when the altitude is changing, I ask, as if you suffer like myself and these counteract it, I'd definitely be interested in a pair. If you can reply it'd be great, thanks.

    It does not matter what you buy. Technology keeps advancing(or at least so you are told)and the latest and greatest is never latest or greatest enough. Sony WH MX-1000, Sony WH-MX-1000 M2 and now Sony WH MX-1000 M3 and next year another one or new version with a new code name and so forth. Point being, be satisfied with what you have if it works well. I don't need to replace headphone every year just be the newest version does this or that that the older version does not. I refuse to be trapped on the "upgrade" treadmill.

    • @treebush

    • @levihssh
      @levihssh Před 6 lety +5

      Sure, we just have to be aware of what is indeed useful for our use and what is just a "nice thing to have". For me, I didn't even feel the slight need to upgrade my M2 for these because I know exactly what I want in my next headphones*, and slight improvements here and there won't cut it. We need a detailed review from Jimsrevieweoom to know how much better is noise canceling now.

      On Land, I doubt there would be any Pressure at all as mine also registers as 1.0 atm. Rheuter Cheng is talking about the difference between Land and in the airplane. Bose's Digital NC is probably software based programmed to be virtual isolation 'compressed or pressurized' feeling. Sony never has that Bose NC pressure. My MDR-1000X was fine in the airplane without any engine noise. Pressure imbalances from various airplane heights vs Constant atm + cabin pressure while horizontal in the air varies slightly, that's where atm auto adjusts.

    I can't seem to find any plausible or even cursory explanation as to why Sony opted for BT 4.2 as opposed to 5.0. The review is solid and answers most of the queries anyone could have. Indeed, I ordered a pair and then went on a fact find to vindicate the purchase. To that end, flossy carter, Jim's review room and trusted reviews have done the heavy lifting and i feel confident in my purchase. It's just strange that Sony would leave this feature out and even stranger that no one (but Jim) seems to care, or even noticed. Very strange indeed.

Also, maybe it's me but I feel all the weight pressing in a small area of the padded headband interior and they fall sometimes when you lay (regardless of how tight I adjust them). Besides that and the kinda mellow highs... Yeah I enjoy them a lot.

I don't know if that it is true or not but on a recent flight while the engine noise was drowned out (and most baby noises), I could specifically hear some annoying women talking quite clearly. Maybe it was their high pitched voices I'm not sure but I don't remember that happening before. I might right these Sony out to hear the difference.

    One thing that bugged me for a while. Why don't those headphones have some built-in memory so they embark their own playlist and your don't need either cables or bluetooth fiddling? Or why doesn't the USB accept a (nano-size) flashdrive. OK, that would need a User Interface for navigation, which is probably the reason. I really like these, but am I wrong or can you not use both Google Assistant and ambient control at the same time? It seems it is either or, which I think is annoying. Either you can access the Google Assistant or you can toggle the noise cancellation stuff...

    the Sony store in my country was selling these for a little more than 215 bucks so I bought them(It was a limited offer since their normal price is 410 bucks), I don't know if I should keep them or resell them for a little quick profit.

    Interesting.How long could you wear this set of headphones without taking them off.Could I watch a movie with it for example, without taking them off in between?

    Anyone know if the WH-1000XM3 is capable of Digital Audio through the USB-C port aside from charging? ( besides waiting for a firmware update) The pins are all there. My Z5 Premium doesn't have an on board digital DAC

      No it isn't. The USB-C port is used for nothing other than fast charging.

    How about your own voice while wearing ? The Bose QuietComfort 35 II hear your voice and plays it for you so you dont have that dull-feeling . Does this it too ?

    Sony has a great ANC product. They still have a huge problem with the headband. After regular use you will find it makes a creaking, popping noise. ANC is diminished with this problem. Sony's response to me is the headband is "irreplaceable."

    Bought a new one last week. The foam pad heats up after few hours and on noise cancelling mode the headphone switches off frequently. Was using on a 16 hour trip from US and I got up Several time as the noise cancelling switched off. Never happened with bose or the zic parrot I had.

    I bought the New Bose noise cancelling headphones and I was disappointed in these.. The treble cracks at high volume and they didn't have the bass drop that I like so I will be returning them today and I will try the Sony and the beats studio 3s out also!!

    can noise cancelling be turned off permanently? with the xm2's noise cancelling had to be turned off manually every time you turn on the headphones. is this still a thing with the xm3's?

    I’m super close to buying these myself but I have a question. I understand you can only have one device connected at a time, but are you able to save different devices? If I wanted to switch from my iPhone to MacBook, how annoying would that be?
