I grew up around antique engines and tractors!! My dad was “The Doctor” of hit and miss engines! At my dad’s passing, he had 450 engines and 50 Tractors!! My dad was also one of the founders and president of root river antique power show in Racine, Minnesota!!
Awhile back I did some work for a guy who worked for fairbanks Morse in beloit wi as the maintenance manager and he was able to get me a tour of the place.. some spectacular engines they build some smaller than this one and others so much bigger...and the machining used to build them was amazing Mostly everthing they build to this day is basically one off stuff ... Thanks Enjoying
This engine is a two stroke diesel engine. Fairbanks Morse designed these engines to start running on two cylinders when the rpm's started dropping. So it basically runs on one cylinder until it gets to slow then the second cylinder will kick in.
I remember one time 25 years ago we went duck hunting on a river and I remember seen an abandoned old engine that was twice the size as this half swallowed on the side of the bank, I'm quite confident that it's still there
Very neat engine. Love the sound and the smoke rings. lol There is a video of a 4 cylinder one on YT that's even bigger. Wish something like this would happen near me.
It's only running on one cylinder because that's the way they idle. These are power demand engines and only fire all cylinders when they are under load. Usually one cylinder is set up as the primary which keeps it turning at no-load idle with the others governed off until under load.
bearbon2 You make it sound more complicated than what it really is. Its a hit and miss engine so when 1 cylinder is enough to make the flywheel latch out the other cylinder doesnt get to fire. You dont control which cylinder fires, its just dumb luck. The same thing would happen if you had 2 or more single cylinder hit and miss engines belted to1 shaft in parallel with no load. One engine would by blind chance be the one that fires making the flywheels spin too fast for the others to fire.
richard vaughn Uhhhm, no? The Fairbanks-Morse Model 32 is not a hit-and-miss engine, it's throttle-governed... What bearbon2 said is correct. With all due respect, have you even heard the difference in sound a hit-and-miss engine makes, compared to one that's throttle-governed? They're completely different rhythms. Plus, most hit-and-miss engines I know of are single-cylinder, you rarely find a multiple-cylinder one. Hit-and-miss engines also do not fire this rapidly once they are at speed. They can fire once every 20 seconds if the RPM is set fairly low. This one is firing about 4 times per second, per cylinder (while both cylinders are firing).
Sheesh, they say size don't matter. They haven't seen a Fairbanks 32 2 cly or, a 32D 4 cly. before. Thanks for uploading. I enjoyed seeing her fire up. Impressive isn't it ?
Dude, These old Fairbank Morse engines are huge, but ... If you want to see massive engines that will boggle the mind, check out marine engines for supertankers. Edit: So ... here is a video link for you: czcams.com/video/BL04oq1lYVc/video.html 🙂🙂🙂
I love those huge Fairbanks morse diesels, many of them were used for power generating plants and In service for more than 50 years and still continue to go strong they are an amazingly over designed machine
Guys! Its a hit and miss engine. The flywheel speed controls a governor that latches out the exaust valves preventing combustion. Because one cylinder is enough to make the flywheel too fast, the other cylinder doesnt fire. Which cylinder fires is blind luck. If they were to slow down the engine by adjusting the governor, cylinders would fire intermittenly and which cylinder fires would be more random.
I'd love for you and the crew to get a chance to revive one of these big ol' FM 2-strokes, but they're just so damn big you'd never get it in the garage!
Mike almost bought one identical to that a couple months ago!! He drove 700 miles to Tennessee and when he got there the guy sold it out from under him!!☺
@@805ROADKING Man that just ain't right. Guy drives down 700 miles to pick somethin' up he's probably not gonna back out. Wish I'da known he was comin' down here though, I'da waved at 'im. I'm out that way myself. Be kinda cool to have one out behind the shop, feed it filtered used cooking oil, make it power the compressor and the outlets in the garage. Have it thumping away back there in the background when ya'll get a chance to have an engine night. Get a lot of good videos off of it!
Oh, that makes sense, i was wondering how they would get both cylinders running at the same time without a pony motor, the volume must be huge on that beast. Amazing that it works (and so well) after so long. I think i heard you say it was restored. Good job on them. Thanks for sharing this, you don't get to see stuff like this every day. :)
CaseyD11 not necessarily. Probably easier than cutting the fuel line installing a valve with 2 compression fittings. 2 more potential fuel leak points And I think a globe valve would be much better that a gate valve. Lol
I know where two of them are setting at. They're 32D two cylinder Fairbanks and Morse engines. They set 3miles south of Gillette Arkansas on US 165 . One sets on the ground and the other sets on it's mounting blocks. The later has oil in it and does turn over and has compression. It's cooler and fuel tank are long gone and the building of the rice grist mill it ran is gone. They are both free if you can move them. The farming museum south of them knows the owners of the property. They set next to the road.
I'm with you. I only think that it was running on one cylinder. It did sound like a few times that maybe fuel was introduced into the second cylinder but it never took off. Is it strictly a manual/human pull start or was there an external source for starting like compressed air? I hope those old chaps figure it all out and teach some of the younger guys how to start, run and maintain the engine. It's fantastic.
*i believe you showed this running before. never showed what they had to go through to get it started but i believe we've seen it run before. was either last winter or the one before. i remember it was cold then*
nice problem to have lol i didn't mind seeing it again i just wondered if it was the same one or not, trying to see if i was going senile already or whathaveyou
Aust1n's Reviews & More Its a hit and miss engine. When the flywheel spins too fast it latches out the exaust valves preventing cylinders from firing. In this example blind chance has that same cylinder stealing the show. If you turn the speed down by adjusting the governor then it will only fire intermittenly which will then start to fire on random cylinders.
@ike fun Well you're just as ignorant as the last guy... the cylinder blowing smoke rings is the idol cylinder that was running, the other cylinder kicks in as load increases or rpm's drop as seen in the video.
I grew up around antique engines and tractors!! My dad was “The Doctor” of hit and miss engines! At my dad’s passing, he had 450 engines and 50 Tractors!! My dad was also one of the founders and president of root river antique power show in Racine, Minnesota!!
Sorry for your loss. Rip.
Sorry to hear your dad has passed away. Hope you are taking over the show. Good luck Sir.
I can listen to engines like this for hours. They have their own music.

napodano26 Must of had been something seeing those pieces there. I admit, i'm a bit envious :D
b2sI I had a good reg0
Love to put this in my backyard as the answer to my neighbor’s loud stereo. That engine is singing to me! Thanks for sharing!!!
It's amazing after all the years powering factories machine and now still running they don't build them like this anymore keep up the good work guys!
Who else is missing events like this in 2020?
Me

Thats a big old engine, really cool. Thanks for sharing man.
Absolutely amazing!
Very cool video. Thanks for posting and have a nice day too.
That smoke just like an "O" you made when you on the first time learn smoking cigarette, awesome!
Roadking ....
There are so many pages on CZcams for me to see .....
But I MUST admit ....
Yours is the BEST engine one by far .....
Thank you.
***** Thanks alot Jim!!☺
Cool thanks for sharing it

Rogue river? If so, it's still there.
Probably used to drive a water-pump for crop irrigation.
Would love to get the big engine. Where is the beast ???
Man ! I'd love to be able to see this one up close, and sure would like to hear this one running on 2.
Thanks, Roadking.
This engine has an awesome sound.
Especially the last sounds: "Pump-ing... Pump-ing... Pump-ing... Pump-ing..." :-)
8 minutes from my home, the Blue Mountain Antique Gas and Steam Engine show otherwise known as Jacktown here in Bangor, PA. 4 times a year
YOU MISSED THE START UP! Still cool.
Wow Roadking that's the biggest I've seen so far. Thank you for sharing.
***** Posted on my 65th birthday as well ....
Thank you RoadKing ..... :)
***** Well a very Happy Birthday To You. :) And may you have many happy and healthy More.
Thank you! :)
Would be a dream working on one of those, full rebuild. Wish I had the time.
Thank you the video!
That's over at the Jacktown grounds where they have the Flea Market right?
The beats dropped by this engine are just as sick as his bigger brothers from that video here on youtube.
Very neat engine. Love the sound and the smoke rings. lol
There is a video of a 4 cylinder one on YT that's even bigger.

CamperMike Thank God for CZcams .....
Well misfire always happens between my buttholes 😂

a 1942 diesel. and ran a graphite plant. At least some of that graphite was used for the Manhattan project.
I think with alittle help you could get it in your Pickup RK lol
What a beast👍
Now... If only it could talk... I'm sure there is some interesting history there!!
a fly wheel on the wall would be interesting indeed

Definitely built according to Morse Code.
@@marshalllhiepler bro what does that even mean. Genuinely asking

I can't believe the power strokes on these things it's like an earthquake

59chevt Thanks for watching Tom!! We try to find odd and interesting stuff!!☺
what model? (its model 32, but is it 32A, 32B or something else)
Very very big machines
Was the second piston wet with fuel or something?
Hi Roadking!
no wonder it was running on one cylinder They forgot one piston ring!
That's Cool how the Exhaust blows smoke rings
its not blowin smoke rings its blowing fuel ring runin on one cylinder
Whatever ...They are rings
max penrose that's steam. Water getting in combustion chamber somehow. Fuel smoke does not dissapate that quickly.
compression evaporate fuel but no burning inside because lubber not warmed up bulb

Crap why did we miss the start & why was it only running on one cylinder.
I want a engine that size for my front yard :)
What were they used for ? Pull a saw mill maybe?
way cool!
How do these lubricate themselves?
I wished you got footage of the whole start up but still a great vid

any idea what it was used for?

a crankcase 2 stroke rune under very high pressure
What a monster! Where's the pushbutton start? LOL! Jack
It has kickstart bruh
I love how when it slows down the second cylinder kicks in and speeds it back up
The exhausts are so big, they look more like cannons firing one after the other.
Nice
If that engine were to run away, you'd have to run away. Either that or you'd have to stuff about 5 quilts into the intake to make it shut down.
Cameron Jenkins imagine how much more you’d need for a run away model 32D
Have a cylinder of CO2 or Argon welding gas plumbed into the intake. No oxygen no ignition.
t44e6 that sounds way more complicated than just adding a gate valve on the fuel supply lol
CaseyD11 not necessarily. Probably easier than cutting the fuel line installing a valve with 2 compression fittings. 2 more potential fuel leak points And I think a globe valve would be much better that a gate valve. Lol
It’s a crank case scavenger engine. It has no oil in the crank case. It is impossible for this type of engine to run away

What displacement?
Mike might struggle to put that in his new garage :D
Это новый мотор для хундай солярис?
When new they probably started once let it run 30yrs until the scrapped it
It looks as though he tries to bleed the flywheel side cylinder injector at one point. But it's definitely running on one. Work in progress I suppose.
Royal Pine Its a hit and miss engine. It only fires intermittenly depending on flywheel speed.

That steam from the exhaust says either a head is cracked (gasket?) or the block is compromised.

What do they use these big engines for? Is it from a boat?
Gijs Boskers They were used to run factories and Mills!!☺
The white puffs from the exhaust appears to be low pressure condensation. It dissappears too quickly to be Diesel smoke.
Yeah, according to other comments other cylinders in these 2 strokes were only on-demand
