Man, a biscuit joiner definitely would have made those huge miters easier! Cool project, Ryan.
Ryan, another great build. "stage-4 honey do" had me cracking up. keep em coming
Gotta keep the boss happy. Great work thus far!
you know it!
You have the most organized and clean workshop that can be seen on youtube. And I mean it!
+woody wood thanks:)
I'm liking it! I really dig the gray color. And I'm with you...the inside being wood looks nice. Totally worth the extra effort.
thanks:)
Tables are looking great and I'm with you I like the natural look of the wood on the inside. Looking forward to seeing the next video.
Nice and simple...and nice. The paint color is great and the contrasting varnished interior was the right choice. Cool!
thanks!
That gray with the inside stain looks awesome. Can't wait to watch the second part.
thanks:)
I like the contrast of paint and Maple, good project.
they are looking really slick. can't wait to see the finished product.
+Crafty Little Maker thanks:)
Looks great. I also like to see the contrast of wood vs paint.
Great looking work. I agree the natural wood on the inside looks great.
+Claterpult Workshop thanks!
Contrast does look great. Nice work!
thanks:)
Great work Ryan! Looking forward to part 2.
thanks!
Joints look great. It shows you have your saw set up well
thanks!
excited to see part 2. that grey layed really nice on that wood. can't wait to see the barn door fronts. modern farmhouse look possibly
thanks. yeah i think the modern case with rustic fronts should look good. i hope;)
Shop built no doubt. look forward to the next video 👍
Its looking good! I also like the contrast between the paint on the outside and stained inside.
nice! looking forward to part 2
thanks!
A happy wife is a happy life, Ryan. Looking forward to the next installment.
+Mike Regan that's right:)
I love the colour. I am planing a bed built and it will be very similar.
Nice work! I like the contrast of the wood/paint as well.
+Dustin Penner thanks;)
Perfect timing on the build! Have to build one for my sons room. However, thats a pretty wide night stand! Mine will likely be half that size... looking forward to Part 2!
yeah, these are to double as a dresser for his cloths.
I like the contrast. I do that a lot on projects.
Looking great so far !!
Excellent design choice!
+Micah Deffries thanks:)
Nice build, i agree contrasting colors is always a nice feature
thanks!
Ryan, I just found your channel, I quite like your style. your videos are very thoughtful in that your explanations are understandable. I too love the contrast between painted with natural wood color. I also really love the metal/wood contrast etc...
thanks man
+Brady McPhail thanks! I appreciate that.
They came out nice. great colour.
thanks!
I really enjoy your videos. Keep up the good work!
+Tom Jackson thanks!
love the music during the miters.
Pretty sweet you found some maple at HD, I never get that lucky! Anyway, nice job so far, looking forward to the next video! 🤓👍🏼
+Live Free and DIY I know I was surprised too.
Those are huge!
+Wordsnwood (Art Mulder) yeah, they are going to double as a dresser.
As always Ryan you do exceptional work. You're very inscribing. Was just talking about building some night stands this evening and then saw your video. Thank you for continually sharing your knowledge and experience with us. Keep up the great work. Happy holidays.
thanks Pat. greatly appreciated :)
A tip. While the glue is still wet, wipe the excess and sand the outside of the miter a bit. The sawdust and glue will help fill in some of the gap the outside of the miter. The Samurai Carpenter has a video explaining it.
looking good! waiting for pt 2
Aha-ha, i'm currently working on a bedside table too :)
Good job man, i'm looking forward to your next video.
+Rai2M thanks!
54 Years married and I only had to learn two words, "yes dear". Regards from England.
i'm slowing learning that one. takes some trial and error.....
Ron Cooper Actually I was told at my bachelor party, by my best friend, that the three phrases that will keep you married : "yes dear", "anything you say dear", and "you're always right dear"
That looks sharp as :D Good work, Ryan! :D
Good call on leaving the wood natural on the inside it's a great contrast. I see you've learned the "keep the camera shakey to hide the gap" maneuver as well!
i know all the moves;)
looks good so far!
Coming along great.
thanks!
Nice woodworking.
I like the contrast also.
Nice work!
Wow! Stage 4 HD -- I feel for ya there, Ryan... Every time I think of a few of mine (when I was chained) it just makes me cringe.... lol Nice video - looking forward to Part 2.
yeah......
Thanks:)
night stands huh. Well I could be worse lol! Their looking great got my own side job this weekend full closet half cubby holes other half hanger poles out off cedar. At least I got paid lol.....oh yea and the sanding block I did turn out great thanks again
I always tell my wife that I could build them if I had another tool. In your case maybe a jointer? Thanks for the great vids. I'm always checking to see if you've posted new things.
+Jeff Forbes that's a good idea!
Good job, Ryan
thanks!
nice build (so far)! I subscribed a few weeks ago. Glad i did. Good content!
Thanks! greatly appreciated.
Nice!
looking good so far...and youll always know theres a gap on the one miter..bwhahahaaa..j.k. thats how I am now you better have a good I touch it up and cover it up I'll always look at that corner or money or whatever it is I have the Gap and think damn there's a gap LOL looking forward to the barn wood haven't seen a barn wood project in a while
Thanks Joe!
Sorry I did not pay attention to the video date and time, for some reason it did not pop up as a new video, cant wait for part 2 . Oh heck why wait I'm on my way over to your shop to help you with part 2 ? Oh I don't know where you live. No just kidding, great job in patiently waiting for part 2.
lol, i could use some help on that honey do list:)
They are coming out really nice, should be great when finished up. The mitres seem like overkill seeing as you ended up painting them though? I use butt joints on plywood boxes which work out fine so long as you fill and sand the edges with filler/putty/etc first. After paint, you can't tell. Looking forward to seeing these finished, oh, and with the width of these boxes, your bedroom must be huge! :-)
+Mario Cappellano (The Woodfather) I never had much luck making plywood end grain look seamless. The room is actually kinda small but these will double as storage as we don't have room for any other furniture in the room.
I probably have lower expectations than you anyways :-)
They came out great, just saw the second video.
Interesting contrast colors, looks like a steel cabinet with maple inlay, good job!
But… you can't see any of the maple after you put the drawers in?
not really but i'll know its there;)
execelente !!!!!!!!
MDF, dowels and glue would have saved you a lot of work and you would'nt had to have the piece of wood in the corners. On the cut, i put some water based polyurethane and sand until it is as glossy as the rest. Very nice and clean shop. Most US hobbyist's have more tools than a european hardware store. I think we may appreciate more to do things by hand.
+Eg Bergweb I stand by my decision using plywood. MDF has it's using but not for cases in my opinion.
i suppose you're discounting the price for this commissioned job :)) Can't wait to see the barn wood with the gray(warming the popcorn...)
naw full price, thats how I roll.....
just don't ask her;)
Thanks
Very simple and stalkful. I like greetings mrhandwerk
How many years past before you managed to get to this project?
i held her off as long as i could.....
The inside-outside contrasting colors is great!
Honest question: why mitre the panels when you knew you were going to paint? In what way will you be able to spot the difference?
good question, I debated on this a lot but my reasoning is because there is no top that sits on the case and there for no good way hide the end grain of the plywood. It was important to me that the case looks as seamless as possible like it is all one peice and I think the miter was the best way to accomplish that.
+Jan-wijbrand Kolman I worked for a guy that thought it would save time by butting it together and filling like that, then we spent triple that time filling and priming the project over and over again.
stage 4 honey do list item... that made me laugh!
you know the list;)
Awesome. How is the air filter performing?
that title says it all
What is your strategy to get that perfectly smooth paint finish?
good roller and a touch of water if too dense
a decent paint with a foam roller. keep the coats thin and take you time of coarse;)
Nice build. Can you tell me the make of the hand router you used in this video. Thanks.
Love your videos man! What was the compound you used to hid the gap on your edge band?
#respect
looking good buddy! you gonna use ball bearing sliders?
fosho;)
Another great video! Btw. What's a 'honey do list'? Not sure it's a thing over here. Is it like a list of things to do round the house or something? ☺️
RuralAccent Woodcraft you know, when the spouse says "honey would you do this?"
no jointer? You could build one out of an Handheld Version for edgejointing :-)
It looked like your over arm dust collection on your table saw was disconnected in the last shot. Was it disconnected while you were cutting pieces in the earlier shop? I was considering doing mine like yours but it looked like you were getting a lot of dust in those shots. That would make sense if you didn't have it connected. Does it normally work pretty well?
+Mickey Griffith I still use it a lot, but sometimes it works better than other. Sheet goods, especially MDF works awesome!
They are looking really good. Going to keep my wife away from CZcams for a bit or I might be get a new thing on the list of things not yet built.
Looks good. Nice hoodie. You from east coast of Canada too??
thanks. yes, NB
Hola Which is the best inverter welding machine
OK come clean, was that Spackle you used to fill the voids? If it is I have done that in the past without success. . .
hey Ryan, I'm just down the road from you, I have a 19" jointer and a 20" planer, if you ever need to use them, please feel free! I would be glad to help you out any way i can, I'm in Browns Flat
Thanks Bob! do you sell hardwoods by any chance?
I have access to alot of rough ash at the moment, but I mostly buy my rough hardwood at "black river woodworking", Walter is great to deal with and has pretty competitive prices, he sells by the bdft, i think he stocks most of the common species in 12' lengths
best black walnut around
ROUGH SAWN MAPLE at Home Depot???? Since when? I have only ever seen rough pine at my local HD. They have maple, oak, and poplar, but it's all surfaced 4 sised (3/4") and super expensive.
+sooth15 I know! I buddy texted me last weekend and said it was there so I drove right out and got some. Cheap to, 11 bucks for a 1/6/8ft board. I picked through the whole rack and it's not great stuff but will do for most of my projects.
At the very beginning of the video what was the white stuff that you used then sanded
Joint compound. Works great to fill gaps on pieces that will be painted.
Great work! What are the dimensions? Looks pretty big!
they will be (with the legs) 16" wide 26" high and 30" wide. I made them over size as they will be used as my sons dresser for his cloths as well.
Thanks!
Eastcoast Lifestyle sweater - where are you from?
+Black Pup NB
Shop built Right on, NS here! Keep up the good work!
what brand filler do you use?
+Carl Martin DAP spakle.
What type of paint did you use?
+Jeff Womack it's called sico evolution. I find all mid grade paints work good, they usually run around 45-50 bucks Canadian a gallon.
Couldnt you just butt-joint the boxes and do the edgebanding with miters as appearance? That may have saved you some time
I debated on this a lot but my reasoning is because there is no top that sits on the case and there for no good way hide the end grain of the plywood. It was important to me that the case looks as seamless as possible like it is all one peice and I think the miter was the best way to accomplish that.
Where do you shop for wood?
+BIG NEAL mainly the big box stores like Home Depot but sometimes I'll buy hardwood from local suppliers like black river woodwork.
simple and sexy can't wait to see how they turn out
thanks:)
Pintrest is the devils web site!
And they look short
there will be feet in the next video.
Having a slight rosacea outbreak? Know that pain buddy.
Pinterest is the devil's playground .
Bout time ya did something for your poor wife. All the hard work she does, kinda think she deserves more than a couple night stands?
+Travis Tufts don't see you building night stands for your wife;)
