  • The Gillespie Pass Circuit is a 58 km loop located in Mount Aspiring National Park. The 3-4 day tramp is filled with everything that’s great about trekking in New Zealand; spectacular mountain scenery, glacier lakes and cosy overnight hits. The challenging hike includes a climb up and over the Gillespie Pass at 1600m.
    The circuit can be walked in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction.
    Date Hiked: April 2022
    Generally, the trail starts from the Blue Pools carpark outside Makarora, but if you organize a Jetboat with Wilkin River Jets, you can save yourself a couple hours.
    Young Hut is not bookable and there is no camping allowed around the hut. Bookings are required at Siberia Hut, but tons of camping space available
    On the final day, you can hike out from Siberia Hut to Makarora, but you will have to cross the braided Makarora River which can be very dangerous.
    You can organize a Jetboat pickup from Kirin Forks, a few hours from Siber Hut.
    Alternatively, you can organize a spectacular helicopter ride from Siberia Hut to Makarora
    ***You should only do Gillespie Pass Circuit if you're experienced with river crossing skills. All river crossings on this Circuit are challenging. Multiple fatalities have occurred in rivers on this track in recent years. Be aware rivers can become impassable after rain. Tents should be carried.
    The circuit is not recommended during winter months due to snow, ice and avalanche risk.

    Thanks. I must have said, “wow,” 40 times. Simply superb. I watched another video of the same trip and the comparison with yours is….
    And so interesting to get the jet boat and helicopter. It might be possible for me to do it that way.
    And the weather over the pass, so lucky.

    "Trekking" = "tramping" in NZ, just for that unique Aotearoa experience. Try to get a weather forecast before you leave Wanaka or Haast, and remember that being popular doesn't mean it's easy.. One of the best informative productions I've seen recently.

      We always check the weather before going, but the issue with NZ weather forecasts is it never seems to be that accurate and each weather forecast seems to be different 😅

    You guys do great videos! - Unfortunately when I went to climb over Gillespie Pass it was horizontal rain, freezing conditions and a white out higher up. After getting most of the way up we turned around, spent another night in the Young Hut then went out. Regretful, but sometimes you need to make those decisions. Don't know why you don't have more Subs!

    How do you set up your outer fly without the inner first 😅 you know what I mean.

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  Před rokem

      Our tent poles are all one piece, so we set that up, and then put the fly up over that. There are loops at the of the fly that the tent poles can go into. If you're using the ground sheet, there's holes the in the corner that the tent pole legs go into and that can help keep it in place too

    THIS INTRO GUYS!! Love it. Thanks for sharing this beautiful video and the additional information in the description. Is it common in NZ that huts are not pre-bookable (is this a word haha?!)? Is it common to book a hut in advance NZ? (that's the better way to ask) Or does it depends per hut and per season?
    Which tent do you guys use? We are looking to upgrade our tent. Would you recommend your tent?

    • @ChrisandDanya
      @ChrisandDanya  Před rokem +1

      It's a bit strange in NZ regarding the hut bookings tbh. They have a pretty good system for booking huts, but you are correct, not all the huts are bookable. All of the non-bookable huts operate on a first-come first-served basis, but there is kind of an unwritten rule that people will "make room" if more people show up then beds (which happens often). It would make a lot more sense if all the huts were bookable, especially since they already have a system in place, but that's a rant for another time 😅. Whenever we're hiking in areas with non-bookable huts, we always carry a tent; we also just prefer staying in our tent anyways.
      A lot of the bookable huts are also considered "must book", as in you can't just walk up and stay there. However, this is generally only the case during Oct - May. Outside of this time, even the must book huts operate on a first-come first-serve basis, even for the Great Walks.
      Maybe we should do a video on this 😅
      We use the Big Agnes Copper Spur UL2 tent and we quite enjoy it! We bought it about 5-6 years ago and don't really have any complaints. There's definitely lighter tents on the market and we are looking at picking up another, but we're in no rush. We're thinking of getting a DCF treking pole tent to save on weight, but we wouldn't use this all the time. We still like using a freestanding tent and depending on the terrain you'll be in, they are a lot more practical.

      @@ChrisandDanya Wow guys! Thanks for the elaborate answer.
      Ah, that's good to know for when we will visit NZ. That's a good tip to always bring a tent. You don't want to end up somewhere and can't sleep.
      You definitely should make a video about the hut-situations in NZ. That would be so helpful for a lot of people I think. Especially for us haha.
      Thanks so much for sharing. We would love to have a free standing tent. In Sweden we noticed that we really need a freestanding one. It would make camping a lot easier.
      Thanks again for your elaborate answer. PS: We are planning to go to Canada in July. You were also looking to visit right?

      @ChrisandDanya  Před rokem +1

      I watched some reviews of 2 person free standing tents recently and apparently the MSR Hubba Hubba is the best one at the moment.
      We are moving back to Canada, but not until June 2024. Ive only done a tiny bit of hiking in Canada so can't really give too many recommendations, but I know there are a lot of amazing trails. Just carry bear spray please 😅

      I believe the Jetboat wasn't too expensive. The helicopter is expensive if you book it on a day they aren't already going out there. However we called them and found out when they were already dropping people off, so we got cheaper rides back. Definitely worth it!
