- At this turbulent time, we’re finding out just how much we all rely on each other in our society, and these difficult circumstances have awakened our compassion.
We need to make sure there is compassion, justice and action for each and every one of us when we face hard times.
Around one in five of us were already in poverty before the outbreak began - already boxed in by high rents and growing costs, often while struggling with health conditions and juggling caring responsibilities.
What effect does poverty’s tight grip have on people’s lives?
In this powerful new short film, from the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and Connected Pictures, the experiences of seven people from around the UK are boldly illustrated in their own words.
The short documentary shows that while a range of events can lead to people getting locked into poverty, there is commonality in people’s emotional experiences and the impact it has on their well-being.
The film demonstrates that poverty has different dimensions, a contributor puts it: ‘[Poverty] means many things, that will also be different for different people.’
The film also creates an understanding of how people’s circumstances restrict their ability to live their lives freely and fulfil their potential.
It poignantly demonstrates the injustice of being held back by poverty - and that it doesn’t have to be this way.
The unignorable conclusion of the film is that if our economy and services were redesigned for each and every one of us, and if we all work together around a shared goal, poverty can be solved.

If she is 72, she will not be put on Universal Credit and, if she is in social housing, she will not be bedroom taxed. Pension Credit is relatively generous compared to working-age benefits. Can someone please point her in that direction.
Thats incorrect he state pension wouldn’t be enough to cover her rent, she would need to claim a top up through UC
@UnknownUser-by4le You are incorrect. She is 72 and says her husband walked out so as a single person of pensionable age, her income-related top up will be through Pension Credit and not UC. Pension credit is more generous than UC and does not have a work conditionality, so either she has been misadvised, or the video is being wilfully misleading in saying she is being pushed into work.
If the video is correct, and she IS being told to claim UC then it can only be because she has a partner below pensionable age so why leave this info out?

We don't wish to have more than we needed, all we want is a just weight, it's really hard to live especially when you're poor and have these condition (health issues I mean 😓)

i was doing good in school always first..but then i went down...my parents expect so much for me they want me to be a doctor but i dont really know..im just waiting for the that god ends my life so that i can stop living in this world i really hope that that day comes its my only way out i thought ppl were just faking depressions..but i feel it now i feel like how do u say this..um i feel crazy, crazy that i want to end myself idk of its right or wrong i feel ill inside

If you live in the UK, there's lots of free support you can get for mental health. I don't know about other countries if you're not from UK, but I'm sure there's something somehow, have hope. Don't hold back, ask for help, and good luck xx

Here we go. Prego wife, the social service did more harm then help us. Its do sad. We would starve if we would not be from farm.

@@DylanM333 yes. But it also Take Money. You must have some sort of bigger garden to sow corn for them to eat. We thankfully asked a man who is not using his big garden to sow corn. The corn seeds we took those free sample corns, we paid a friend who owns a tractor and sower to sow the "field". We also poisoned the grass because poison is so expensive its My monthly living so we borrowed it too what was the leftover. We hope we Will have just enough corn for chicken. We are thinking about few turkeys and a dwarf rabbit so our vegetables from garden don't go to waste. When you plant its sometimes way more then you can eat. Selling is not an option, everyone has it. Or in city you gonna pay more for the spot than what you Will earn. Sad.
I spent 22yrs reoccurring homeless. I now live in public housing. I'm 44. Anyway.. my EFTPOS card declined, (I was buying a beanie.) I said to the saleswoman "oh well... Have you ever heard the saying poverty is a virtue?" She said "yes, yes many times"...ok I think she thought she heard honesty, but wasn't honest enough to say so??? I don't know 👎

A controversial activist who tweeted “victory to the Intifada” has been awarded a £63,450 grant by a charity to create a book about black liberation, the JC can reveal.
Joshua Virasami was given the grant in July by the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust (JRCT) as part of its “Rights and Justice” programme, which aims at “promoting rights and justice for minorities who face the most severe forms of racism”.
