Me and my family finally escaped poverty 2 years ago. One skill I picked up from living in the slums for 7 years is good budgeting skills. I can memorize prices of a lot of things we need and my parents made me their personal accountant. So far I've been doing good helping my family with spending money and we finally have a nice house and enough money to pay the bills, groceries and even some money left over to buy luxuries for ourselves :)

I remember paying Rs 5 to sleep in a corner on the floor of a dilapidated hotel in Bombay India as I had very little money in my pocket and couldn't afford a room and had to go for an interview the next morning properly dressed in 1976. I got the job of a refrigeration mechanic and headed to Dubai the very next month. My life changed after that. I built a career in which I progressed from Mechanic to Technician and a few years later from Supervisor to Technical Sales Representative and again a few years after that from Sales Executive to Sales Manager when I finally retired in 2015 after 38 years of working and enjoying an amazing life. Got married to a lovely Filipina. Currently, I'm retired in the Philippines! Oh! What a blast it has been! I'm proud to say I did it the hard way but it paid off.

Good job, but I disagree fundamentally with this video. The majority of people born into poverty are never able to gain the money needed to pursue an education. Often times poverty goes hand in hand with broken family relationships and poor health which can affect people by adding overbearing responsibilities. Finding a passion even, if you have no time or energy to pursue what interests you becomes almost impossible. The rat race society forces the poor to run keeps them in their tracks, often binding them by high housing and transportation costs. Having lived in NY I imagine that you are familiar with all of this and could see how condescending this video is. I was born on the coast in California, and housing should never be more than 50% of what you can make.🤦‍♀️

After foreshortening, I used to save on an average 60% of my salary (crazy right!), but my first big break came in 2019 in stocks, with the help of a full service broker , I had accumulated enough money to retire! While your not entirely wrong with what you’re saying, it has no bearing on the question I was responding to. But let’s be honest, most of the people of the world live on less than the equivalent of US $5 a day and much of that is unrelated to the colonial period. There were large chunks of African countries that were huge farming centers for the world and then the governments ran out the farmers and replaced them with people that had no idea how to operate a farm and countries such as Zimbabwe went from being a top 5 exporter of wheat to one of the largest importers in the period of about 5 years. To say they are poor because they got colonized 200 years ago is ludicrous.

    What it took me:
Holding two jobs - one with mando 10-12 hour days, plus a p/t on the side - for about half a year. I'd sleep 3 hours a night for 6 days a week - one day where I could sleep a full 8, and another where I did my laundry. It also took a gym membership for showering between jobs. The degree of work it takes is extremely unreasonable, and to get there today, you must be unreasonable as well.
The real gap to jump is the $16k-$48k/year "middle income trap." If you're really crossing your t's and dotting your i's, you'll need an income above $50k/year just about anywhere you go in the states now; and financial assistance programs cut their qualifying range somewhere around $16k/year. So if you're somewhere in the middle, you can tread water for awhile, but don't let yourself become complacent with that. All it takes is one disaster - family emergency, car malfunction, some disaster like that - and it could level you back to nothing. Build circles of support for this kind of thing, especially where you're working.

Thinking about what my future would become is so damn stressful upon knowing that my current financial capability is barely sustaining my daily basic needs. Sometimes, I feel envious to other people bcuz they aren't thinking much about this so called "FUTURE". I'm not criticizing them for who they are bcuz that's how this world works nowadays. People around me would always say enjoy life bcuz you only live once and they meant it by spending money unwisely. And that's why it isn't surprising when only few succeed. Verily, I'm not obsessed aiming for greater heights in life, just an average life is enough (not scanty by any means). They barely had enough for the family of 7 to eat. My friend told the guy that our company was hiring a lot of new workers, and all he needed to do was apply. He had no real skills, but he was hired 3 days later, at a good rate of pay, with benefits. After he'd worked about 5 weeks, he failed to show up for work for 4 days in a row. Worried that something drastic may have happened to him, my friend went to his house to ask if he was okay, and why he wasn't showing up for work. The guy told him he just got tired of getting up at 6:30 every morning and working for 8 hours all day. For him, poverty was a choice he made for his wife and kids. Education in fact is not always an effective tool to escape poverty. Employers hire potential employees not just on education but also on the skills and experiences which could add value to their companies. If the educations and skills in question aren't relevant to the line of work, they hardly could land a job for job seekers.

Social skills such as interviewing, toxic positivity, obedience, beauty, and business etiquette matter more to managers than technical skills. Job interviews are now auditions. Job postings are now seen by thousands of applicants worldwide. Qualifications are now 20 years experience, even for entry-level jobs. Applicants have only a 1% chance of being hired, now.

During and after the mandates, I went into package handling also part-time and volunteering full-time when there were a lack of workers. Today, I’m a grounds worker/landscaper full time with benefits. Along with my family, we run a small but very profitable catering business for parties & gatherings on weekends or selective days making a modest living for over a decade and we’re thriving for the American Dream.

I think those of us who grew up in real poverty tend to have a strange relationship with money. We either spend all of it like there's no tomorrow (which was my problem), or we hold on to it so tightly that we refuse to even buy necessities for fear that we'll be poor again (which was my husband's problem). I wanted everything I felt like I couldn't afford when I was poor. My husband wanted to turn off the water heater and take out the light bulbs when they weren't in use to save money on utilities. Overcoming the poverty mindset is the toughest part of moving out of poverty.

At a conceptual level, pretty much everything in this video is accurate in terms of steps that would result in a person improving their position in life, no matter what their current economic level is.
Unfortunately, the presentation is simplistic and ignores the challenges that those in poverty actually face just to be able to consider attempting any of the steps. Reinforcing the total lack of awareness of reality is that almost all of the scenarios shown in the video of people acting out the recommendations were images of people who were clearly not in poverty. The images were basically of middle to upper middle class non-minorities taking advantage of resources that are readily available to them. The narrator mentions libraries, churches, community centers, services provided by NGOs and non-profits, but has apparently done nothing to find out how limited those sources are. Every one of the community support services he mentions is underfunded in the USA and has too many current and potential clients to serve to be able to do a broadly effective job. One of the reasons they are underfunded is because upper middle and upper class individuals who have political influence make sure that they are underfunded at the Federal, state, and local levels.
This video is basically a device intended to make comfortable people feel self-satisfied and justified in providing little support for poverty eradication by laying off responsibility totally on those who are in poverty. After all, if poor people don't want to try and they enjoy being in poverty, then there is no need for the haves to help the have nots.
Of course, if everyone currently in poverty was able to accomplish the things recommended in this video, who would be left to clean the houses and care for the lawns of those who are well off? Who would be available for child care? Who would do the menial tasks that make life comfortable for those who are well off? If people really want to help others to escape poverty, a good starting point would be to pay more than poverty wages to the people who serve and make the lives of the middle, upper middle, and upper class comfortable. But that won't happen because those who could deliver change through beneficial use of their political power feel more comfortable laying off 100% of the blame and responsibility for being poor on those who are poor.
Until there is systemic change that provides real, equal opportunity for all, the things recommended in this video are nothing but feel good platitudes to soothe the consciences of those who will never have to be concerned about facing poverty themselves.

I say this multiple times and I definitely get the your just being lasy and if I can do it you have no excuse spill . I just recently lost my car because someone else ran the red light and even know the damage was cosmetic the insurance wouldn't pay to fix it because the cars worth was 7,000 dollars . Most of the pay out went towards the loan company . We spend alot more to get around , my husband has to choose between bringing a lunch , a change of clothes or his tools , and has to walk a ways to the train and still walk an hour to work and then get back home around 8- 9 . Since he can't exactly bring everything he needs sometimes crappy gas station food is all he eats for that day .. with me my work is local and sometimes I get picked up . I also get dropped off after so I have the luxury of just bringing my lunch . I walk when I can but walking with more then a backpack and 1 light bag of groceries is taxing regardless if it's a 20 minute walk . Extreme weather also puts a toll and I'm pregnant so I'm finding i have to be careful of what exposure I have . Not including the price of appointments I have to make . Not having a car if we are frugal with it can probably be less then the gas , maintenance and insurance. To be honest it's just not rediculous and probably end up spending more on Lyft's then it's worth in gas and I can't finance under 12000 dollars so I have to save a good amount + take out a loan up to 3,000 to pay in cash to buy a 5 year old car . I got decent credit but loan interest rates are very expensive when you go interests free for 18 months you can knock it out by paying a good amount for that time period, but pass it you can be paying 18-22% in interest. Where as the dealership my interest rate is below 5 % but I'm at risk of getting a loan that is above 7 years for a used vehicle. 🤦‍♀️ this is my research. The baby was abit of a surprise but I'm not gonna just get rid of it and I'm ready to do what it takes to take care of it . Didn't even think I could have kids being 27 and married and living with my husband since I was 20. It's ok though we have alot more spending to do unfortunately investing in a washer and dryer and a car is the 1st thing on the list of many and what we make to together isn't alot of money so payments what we have to do .

To be aware of & use this advice: In your early childhood, you needed a parent / caregiver / close friend that knew at least some of this information and supported you in this way. You could not have done this on your own. Absent such early childhood conditioning, you could have learned this as an adult if you were taught to be open-minded & curious. A person in poverty is so overwhelmed with surviving that focusing on the issues & advice discussed here is basically impossible w/o a lot of support & help from a life-competent person. Being born into poverty is like being born in line to step-up to the batter's box while others are born on 1st, 2nd or 3rd plate! Peace.

We have failed as a species. Too many humans live in poverty, it is unnecessary and an imaginary system we created. There will always be a small group of extremely wealthy people while the rest of us struggle and suffer. This system is reaching its breaking point and will no longer be sustainable on our planet. Good Luck and God Bless Us All!

But all you need to have is faith in God, an undying passion for what you do and what you choose to do in this life, and a relentless drive and the will to do whatever it takes to be successful in whatever you put your mind to.
