The thing about JB is he came from a Northern soul and reggae background and that describes his sound right there...he never overplayed and what he does play he made damn sure you knew about it...he set the bar... and he tuned his pearl ultracast in such a way that it was unmistakable... those snare and cymbal smashes are his trademark...he was the best and the specials haven't sounded the same since he passed...that tells you everything ✋🏻😎
Revisiting this today as we try to process that Terry's passed yesterday. Not 5 years older than me & so many questions but resisting them all. This is time for his family, friends & the band to come together & do what they need to. We're losing so much talent this year but this hits very close to home. RIP Terry. Rest easy 😪
Played Blackburn Lancashire around this time, I was stood outside listening in at King Georges Hall without ticket ( 14 at the time) RIP Terry Hall you where my hero and still are.
Simply the best days ever, not a care in the world, just enjoying life and loving ska, these guys are legend's to me and their music will always have a special place in my heart.
This is MUSICAL MAGIC ABSOLUTE PERFECTION I'm so LUCKY to have seen these guys live here in Aotearoa New Zealand R.I.P TERRY HALL we will keep SKANKING OUR FEET TO YOUR ROCKSTEADY BEAT THANK YOU FOR A LIFE TIME OF HAPPY MEMORIES WITH YOU AS THE SOUND TRACK 👏👏👏👍✌️
i was 14 in 79, saw the Secret Affair as my first gig and the specials for my 2nd - the whole ska and mod revival showed that we didnt have to be taken in by the nf or latterly the bnp and the followers who seek t gain power by dividing us - we had style and an attitude that said fuck you we'll have the friends we want to we have so much more in common in our lives than being told our skin separates us - a 'specials' gig always felt like it was about to 'kick off' yet rarely did - the tunes were about peace yet felt violent - i watch the Sleaford mods now and that feels the same - bothers me that nowadays you have to have a m/c income to afford what was w/c clobber
Those on the stage are telling their grand-kids, "As you can see, not a bloody cell phone in site. We knew how to enjoy ar'selves, we did." God bless all of you. We United as one and no government could separate us.. BLACK-WHITE-UNITE FIGHT...
Wow I IDOLISED Terry Hall as a kid .I remember buying a thin black tie with a print of Terry on the front Wow what days. EVERYONE have HEALTHY NEW YEAR...RIEP TERRY
Absolutely love this & I,m gonna watch it another million times, one of the best things I,ve ever seen & one of the best things i,ve ever heard,R.I.P. Terry 💔💔 R.I.P. John 💔💔
Doesn't get much better than this. The magnificence almost makes me cry with joy when I watch this. Wonder who was on the recieving end of the tambourine Terry threw!!??
IIRC, he chucked it at a bouncer stopping kids from jumping on stage and dancing. It's the highlight for me and solidifies this as my favorite Specials performance
That's something I've really noticed with all the english ska bands I've seen here in Aotearoa New Zealand they treat their fans like family the bouncers and Dickheads in the crowd get a blast through the PA and called out SKA IS HAPPY MUSIC no room for violence or agro just smiling happy people SKANKING TO THE WONDERFUL OFF BEAT
I only recently got heavy into ska and discovered the specials and Terry hall. I have heard this many times but I never knew how amazing it truly was back then.
In them days youth culture was everything being a skinhead it was great times. We had the odd punch up but not like today sticking knives in each other, it’s sad young people dying now.
I've watched this video so many times. I noticed that the only black lad who gets on the stage paces angrily and then walks off. I think he came from offstage, not the pit. Guessing the bouncers must have started off with preventing some black kids from getting up, and they were offended. Whatever it was, it was the only thing that marred the show.
If you mean the guy in the black sweatshirt at about 4:40, he's a roadie/sound tech sort. You can see him at about the 0:30 mark picking a mic stand up.
+Sally-Linda Morris I am so glad you pointed that out. I have seen this lots of times but never noticed that. I always notice a few seconds later Terry chucks the tambourine on the floor and has a right go at somebody but I always thought he was having a go at one of the kids in the audience. It is clear now. He was having a go at the bouncers for trying to stop the crowd getting on stage, Thanks again.
3:24 and 3:57 - Terry angry with the bouncers trying to keep the kids off the stage. 4:50 - Many children invade the stage. 5:25 - The kids almost push Terry off the stage. 😀😀😀
At the end of all the early gigs the fans from Cov would invade the stage . Theres a clip somewhere maybe from Norwich Uni when we just took over lol . Got pulled at school the next day for wagging the afternoon of ha
my names Reg and i was at this concert and about 5 others by specials that year ,party with them afterwards ,It was a great time to be young then only thing that spoilt it was conservatives coming into power
RIP Terry Hall .. he was such an icon to many of us and a huge legend in the ska scene. He will be sadly missed!
I couldn't stop a tear.
Terry @ 4:40 that's a great remembrance of him.
Didn't know he died just wanted to hear some specials today
Yes. I'M GOING TO MISS TERRY
It's bloody sad alright 😢 THANK YOU TERRY FOR YOUR MUSIC AND THE GREAT MEMORIES WITH YOU AS THE BACK BEAT
RIP John Bradbury. Fantastic drummer who never really got the credit he deserved.
One of the best. could share a stool with any of them!
I cannot agree more a legend is how I would describe him myself
The thing about JB is he came from a Northern soul and reggae background and that describes his sound right there...he never overplayed and what he does play he made damn sure you knew about it...he set the bar... and he tuned his pearl ultracast in such a way that it was unmistakable... those snare and cymbal smashes are his trademark...he was the best and the specials haven't sounded the same since he passed...that tells you everything ✋🏻😎
Couldn't agree more. As solid a drummer as you could want.
Instantly recognisable from any other you could name. Loved his work

Absolutely magical coming from and old geezer who can remember the days when gigs were organic and did not run to local council timetables

and we have cell phones to review and re-enjoy events
So much stuff like this would be lost without cell phones. Would you rather not having easy access to this and so many other fantastic performances?

Quite simply one of the greatest bands that I ever saw back in the days when I still had enough hair to Spike.
Rest in paradise terry, ska is alive 4 ever
I love how the guys that got on stage to dance are in perfect sync with Terry when they start playing Moonstomp.
