Now I finally know the maker of that die stock I've had for 30+ years. Thanks, Dave.

Nice job! It came out looking great. I too am a big fan of Evaporust. I like that it's non-toxic and won't eat the metal. Vinegar removes rust too but will start eating the metal beyond about 24 hours. When I do use vinegar, I always rinse the parts really well in a mixture of water and baking soda to neutralize the acid.

Nice little tap set Dave...nice job cleaning them up

Good project Dave! I'm also a fan of Evaporust. Drills, reamers, taps, and dies are definitely items you want to stock up on when you find them cheap, because when you need that special one right away, you pay through the nose.

looks great,i scored a bunch of old starrett machinist tools,a kennedy 2 drawer riser, and a craftsman machinist tool box for 50 dollars!!!! i sold the kennedy for 40,and 5 of the other items for 200 on ebay. i still have the craftsman box which i plan on restoring plus a whole lot more tools im keeping. i have a old snap om tap and die set in a wood case from the 40,s i got for free cleaning out a house years ago.

Man, that is fantastic! Best machinist toolbox deal I've gotten was $60 for a 520 box, $60 for the contents which was most of my center drills and reamers you see. Few misc Starrett items in there.

it was one of the last outdoor flea markets for the season and she just wanted it gone, plus when she said she thought of making the craftsman box into a jewlery box it was a done deal. i didnt buy everything she had,and i kinda regret it,however i saw her the next sunday at a different location and bought a ziplock bag full of leftovers. i sold a pin mic for 52 dollars that was in the bag, deals like this are very few and far between though

Those Ace sets are good quality HSS tooling. Good score.

I was presuming them to be High Carbon Steel. Have I been wrong about that? I know the modern ones (now brand owned by Irwin) are High Carbon.

Crafted I could very well be the one that is wrong. I have an old set that is in a yellow plastic box just like your green one. The taps all have “HSS” on them. I just assumed yours did too. Usually the high speed steel taps of any make will have the “HSS” marked on them. You can also usually tell by the shiny appearance. Most of the carbon taps I’ve seen have a more dull finish. Yours didn’t look dull to me. They had the “HSS” appearance. Either way, I still think you have a nice set there.

The Ace taps just say USA on them. The few Regal taps say HSG or HS on them. I use a cell phone for videos and it over exposes a bit. I'd class the surface finish as dull on the Ace taps and bright on the Regal ones. An American made HSS tap and die set is $1000 and up today. I have been shopping these ACE sets for a while and can't remember seeing an orange box. It could be they had a premium machinist line and that is what you stroked into.

Crafted Dave, you are probably correct. I’d like to donate a few taps of various sizes to your stash. If you still have my email, send me an address and I’ll ship some out to you tomorrow. If not, get my phone number from Bob and text me an address. I have quite a few extras you could use. Matt

They cleaned really cleaned up well.
I picked up a couple of sets at an estate sale years ago and packed them away in the back of my shop.
Don't have much in them. Got a truck load of shop stuff for around thirty bucks.
I'll have to dig them out and see what brands they were. I just know they are old.

I would have used Silicone Spray not Armor All. Armor All is water based, I think? You did sell me on Evapo-Rust however.

    • @CraftedChannel
      @CraftedChannel  Před 5 lety

I'm still not sure on the Evopo-Rust. If you leave metal in it a very long time it gets very dark. I've also used white vinegar recently. It too will darken metal but reputably only if it's used in a cold evironment. ????? Anyway it seemed to work OK as well.

Maybe if you had have cleaned out the tray with the sticky goo in the bottom first, you wouldn’t have had sticky dies and needing to clean parts again and again. Just sayin.
