Tragic Story of Dee Dee Ramone
What’s going on my fellow rock n’ rollers don’t forget to hit the bell notification icon to be notified everytime i upload a new video on my channel. The Ramones bassist Dee Dee Ramone was only 50 when he died in 2002. He lived a pretty tragic life that was consumed by drugs, alcohol and rock n’ roll. This is his story.
Dee Dee ramone was a founding member, main songwriter as well as the bassist for the hugely influential punk rock group the Ramones. Dee Dee’s struggle with substance abuse was no secret as he would publish an autobiography in the late 90’s and documented his crippling addiction. The story of the ramones is one of great tragedy as dee dee would die within almost a year of when Ramone’s frontman joey ramone passed at the age of 49 from cancer.
Originally named Douglas Glenn Coven, Dee Dee was born in 1951 in Fort Lee Virginia. His father was in the military and his mother was a German a women. Given his Father’s profession he moved around a lot and Dee Dee by his own admission claimed his childhood was “lonely”. When he was an infant his family relocate to West Germany where he would stay until he was the age of 15. His father would struggle with alcohol and resulted in his parents splitting up. Dee Dee, his mother and sister would move back to the States finding a new home in Forest Hills, New York. It was in Forrest Hills he met two other guys named John Cummings and Thomas Erdelyi (erdalee)later dubbed Johnny and Tommy Ramone, who were playing in a band named Tangerine Puppets After some discussion the trio decided to start their own band. But They would add friend Jeffrey Hymann who was a drummer in another band named Sniper to cement the lineup. They would call themselves the Ramones. They would draw inspiration from the Beatles Paul McCartney who would use the alias Paul Ramon when staying at hotels. Each band member of the band would change their surname to Ramone as an act of solidarity. Douglas Coven would become Dee Dee Ramone, John Cummings would become Johnny Ramone, Thomas Erderly would become Tommy Ramone and Jeffrey Hymen would become Joey Ramone.
It was a struggle at first as the Ramones had revolving cast of members in different positions as Dee Dee originally was the vocalist, while Joey was a drummer. After some maneuvering Joey became the vocalist while Dee Dee would focus on bass as he found singing and playing bass at the same time difficult, but he’d still add vocals on a few Ramones tracks. A year later in 1974 the band made their live debut and soon made a name for themselves on the New York music scene.
Mixing pop with their hard rock influences including the Who, The MC5 and the Stooges they would soon become synonymous with the New York punk rock scene using just three chords to write songs. By 1976 the band released their self titled debut album which included the punk rock anthem Blitzkrieg Pop. Dee Dee would end up being one of the band’s most prolific lyricist and songwriters penning such tracks “poison heart,” “rockaway beach” and 53rd and 3rd that documented his life as a street hustler. Something that would hamper Dee Dee for much of his life starting in his teenage years was drug addiction especially as the musician took a liking to heroin.. In the intro to Dee Dee Ramone’s book Lobotomy, Legs McNeil would write, “Dee Dee was the archetypal f--k-up whose life was a living disaster. He was a male prostitute, a would-be mugger, a heroin user and dealer, an accomplice to armed robbery -- and a genius poet who was headed for an early grave, but was sidetracked by rock ‘n’ roll.”In addition to drug abuse Dee Dee would also suffer with mental illness and drug abuse put a strain on his marriage to his first wife Vera Boldis The couple would separate in 1990 before finalizing their divorce in 1995.
In the years that followed the Ramones would undergo numerous lineup changes with Dee Dee remaining intact until 1989 after playing on 11 records. It was during his time in rehab in 1987 he soon learned about rap music, which changed his career path following his exit from the Ramones. I always loved playing live with the ramones but I had to kind of like go my own way and stick up for myself and do what i wanted to do. There freaked you know at first they didn’t believe it. thought i was going through a midlife crisis, they thought i’d be back. He won’t be though.

Finally something about the Ramones. It amazes me how much people downplay the Ramones importance to the music industry. Not just the punk scene, but alternative, grunge, rock, and most prominently, thrash metal. Their live shows were one of the impetuses of the high speed, thrash sound. Personally, I feel only the Beatles were more influential to modern music than the Ramones, and Dee Dee was a huge part of that.

One of my favorite quotes from Dee Dee from End of the Century, something along the lines of "What would the Ramones have done without me? What would I have done without them? Probably be dead" it was just such an honest true moment that he recognized in himself and just a matter of fact, that the Ramones most likely wouldn't have gone anywhere without him, and vice versa. He was a poet and amazing song writer. And he had every right to recognize that and be proud of that.

Dee Dee wrote A LOT of the Ramones best songs, and i think he was by far the closest to the kids that were actually listening to the Ramones and hanging out. meaning he was still kind of a kid at heart and of mind, he much more than the others really wanted to get a punk style haircut and go hang out and be in the scene. but he really didnt have the voice to be a singer or a rapper, and he always seemed sort of scatter brained and odd in interviews. i love him but think he would have been a difficult person to hang around, as would Johnny.

No breaks between songs, no posing, no sipping on water, no smoke breaks. It was a 45 minute non stop blitzkreig of PUNK. Fantastic in every way. They switch instruments and played Misfits and Ramones songs. That was a special show. He died a week later down the street from the Key Club which formally used to be Billboard Live and before that Gazzaries. R.I.P. DEE DEE

Two days after Joey died the most well-known Ramones songs started appearing in tv commercials. That's just what I remember, I'm not saying that has anything to do with DeeDee. I really like him and I have a deep kind of empathy for anyone who's gone through heroin addiction. Most of us didn't survive it and it's a lonely retirement for we who have. That RHCP song "otherside", where Kiedis says - "...once you know you can never go back..." Yeah. If you don't know, don't find out. I can't tell you how fortunate you are to have not experienced it. And if you know someone who's in that grey area between - then say something before it's too late. There's things that can be done, just ask me. I'll talk to anyone who might need help with that.

They really didn't go through numerous line up changes. Tommy left the band to work at a recording studio and be their occasional producer. DeeDee's friend Mark Bell became Marky Ramone on their fourth album. He had problems with alcohol and Richie Reinhardt replaced him for a few years, wrote some songs, made the band play even harder and faster and did backup vocals. He left because of a dispute over not getting a cut of the merchandise sales. Marky came back after Blondie's drummer, Clem Burke played a few shows but couldn't play well enough to make them happy. DeeDee was replaced by Chris Ward, CJ Ramone. There was a point where DeeDee wanted to come back but Johnny wouldn't let him which drove a wedge between them. Neither Richie or CJ were inducted into the RnR Hall of Fame, only the other five were.

It's a horrible way to go. Mental illness sucks, and addiction is a mental illness. Dee Dee actually had a "dual diagnosis" since he also had Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression). The majority of Bipolar people end up with substance abuse problems because they discover they can "self medicate" with those substances. It's very sad and difficult to really prevent or stop.
In my opinion mental illness can kill people just like cancer does. It's merely a different mechanism at work damaging the person's brain/body. If you can't control your brain chemistry then you really can't control your brain.

In a recent interview Marky Ramone said Dee Dee had a very child like imagination that led to him being both unpredictable and a great songwriter. The story goes that Dee Dee was a chicken hawk in New York City when he was younger and that's what inspired the song 53rd & 3rd. Whatever the truth may be one thing's for sure Dee Dee was ambitious and had a knack for writing catchy revved up pop tunes that spawned the 70s New York punk scene. Dee Dee was an original, Dee Dee is a legend but most of all Dee Dee was a Ramone. R.I.P Douglas Cloven aka Dee Dee Ramone.

Just finished it, good job! Good research. Dee Dee, Joey, and Johnny are all icons as far as I am concerned, each representing a different kind of, like, punk archetype. Dee Dee the very troubled "bad boy" poet, Joey the sensitive outcast that was empowered by his music to reinvent himself, and Johnny the mean "tough guy" (even though he looked like he weighed a bunk fifty when he was young). They are more than this, but these descriptions are a start. CJ Ramone (Dee Dee's replacement) has a neat solo song called "3 Angels" about this three, and his relationshjip with them. Good job on Dee Dee today.
