When Metallica left the stage in Stockholm, Sweden, on September 26, 1986, none of them had any idea it would be Cliff Burton’s last performance. He was 24 years old.
Burton was the bassist for Metallica for four years, from 1982-1986 replacing original bassist Ron McGovney. McGovney left after a tumultuous time in the band during which he clashed with drummer Lars Ulrich and guitarist Dave Mustaine. . Burton was part of the group when they recorded their first three highly influential records including- Kill ‘Em All, Ride the Lightning and Master of Puppets.
Unlike so many rock legends who died too soon, his death was an accidental one and not related to any sort of substance abuse. AndTo many he was in the prime of his career when he would die. And This is his story.
Burton had wanted to be a bassist since he was 13 years old, following the death of his brother from a brain aneurysm. According to Burton’s parents Cliff was quoted as saying "I'm going to be the best bassist for my brother."[2] Burton was dedicated to his instrument playing up to six hours per day even after joining metallica. Along with classical and jazz, Burton's other early influences varied from southern rock and country to the blues. And The bassists who influenced him included Lemmy of Motorhead Geddy Lee of Rush, and Gezzer Butler of Black Sabbath
Right before Burton got picked up by Metallica, he was in a band called Trauma, who played an 1982 show at Whisky a Go Go in LA. Metallica frontman James Hetfield and drummer Lars Ulrich were at that show. Impressed by his skills the pair knew they had to get him to join metallica. it was the perfect timing for Burton, because he thought that Trauma was starting to get more commercial and was looking for a way out. But It was also during this time bassist Ron Mcgovney who was still in the band started noticing burton hanging out more at shows often with the band. And McGovney would remember in the book louder than hell the oral history of metal “i knew who he was and i knew they were looking at him. And i saw that was pretty much the end of it right there.”
And Burton would have one condition before joining Metallica and that would be the band would have to relocate to his hometown of San Francisco. That was a pretty big ask, but since they wanted him in the band so badly, they agreed to move from LA. To be exact, they were based in a town in the Bay area called El Cerrito.
The band would record three albums with Burton including their debut 1983’s kill em all, 1984’s ride the lightning and 1986’s master of puppets.. The band soon relocated to Old Bridge, New Jersey, and it was there they recorded their debut album. The band originally wanted the album to be called Metal Up Your Ass, but this title was turned down by their record company. Megaforce records.
On kill em all Burton’s style was highlighted on the track (Anesthesia) - Pulling Teeth and One of the things he did that was unusual for a bassist was use the wah-wah pedal.
Burton would continue to grow as a bassist on the band’s second album, Ride the Lightning - released on July 24, 1984, in particular on the tracks “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and “The Call of Ktulu..”
After the release of Ride the Lightning, Metallica would get picked up by Elektra Records, and would release their landmark album 1986’s Master of Puppets
The album is considered to be one of the greatest heavy metal albums of all time. The album went 6 x platinum in the United States and Canada, and hit Platinum in the U.K, Australia, Argentina, Finland, Germany and New Zealand.
On March 27th, 1986, the band embarked on the nearly year-long Damage Inc. tour to promote the Master of Puppets album.
During this same tour, the band would also become one of the first American acts to play across the Iron Curtain, with two February 1987 shows in Poland. Metallica also played the legendary Roskilde festival during this tour.
Unfortunately, the tour was bound to be full of challenges. - Hudba

Im calling bullshit. Your whole comment sounds fake and just intended to get likes.
Starved for attention are ya?
Believe it or not the song "The Outlaw Torn" is actually based off how the band handled Cliff dying. In the song it says "You make me smash the clock and feel" this is because James smashed a clock out of anger after Cliff's death. It also says "I'd rather die behind the wheel" because James told reporters in an interview "He wish he had died and not Cliff." Its such a tragic situation that we lost one of the greatest bassists of all time. RIP Cliff.
Don't forget about the fact, Kirk Hammett claimed Cliff was actually in his bunk.
We lost a great person who happened to be a great bassist.
Damn I never knew that thats what the song is based off of is that true?
@@mattjones2003 Yeah Outlaw Torn is one of my favorites off load and I always wondered what it was about and did some research and it made so much more since. Such an underrated song imo.
Bryce Bryan I agree 100% it's super underrated. Ine of my favorite songs to play on guitar, there was a period of time where I would put on the S&M version of the song and play along with it on guitar everyday for like two weeks 😂
FUN FACT: Cliff inadvertently named Kill 'Em All. He was pissed about having to rename the album, and said "Why don't we just kill 'em all?" (referring to record execs).
Scott Udell ohh this makes sense, because it was originally gonna be named “Metal Up Your Ass”, and that was denied and cliff was pissed and said that?? Am I right? Or wrong
@@codystrykowski9276 You're right.
@@codystrykowski9276 You mean one of the band's several demo tapes *"Metal Up Your Ass/Arse" (1982)?*
Jose Carrillo II yeah that too, i could have just said that. wasn’t it “No Life Til’ Leather” though? Or was there 2 demo’s?
@@codystrykowski9276 *"Metal Up Your Ass/Arse"* was one of *SEVERAL* demo tapes Metallica released between 1981 and '82, with 1982's *"No Life 'Til Leather"* being the most iconic.
Ironically, "Kill 'Em All" was to be originally titled *"Metal Up Your Ass,"* but was later changed due to the supposed violent nature of the artwork cover, which depicted *a human arm holding what looked like a dagger and sticking it out from inside a toilet bowl.*
The music world lost a giant that day. Long live, Cliff. 🤘🏻
Fun fact: Cliff also drew the cover art for Kill em All.
Thanks for the fun fact 👍🤜🤛🤘
I consider myself lucky to have attended Cliff Burton’s final U.S. performance before his death on August 3, 1986 in Hampton, Virginia when I was 16. They were the opening act for Ozzy Osbourne. Greatest concert ever. Hard to believe there was an actual time when Metallica was an opening act in the U.S. Hetfield’s arm was broken, so their roadie John Marshal played guitar in his stead. Late in Metallica’s set, the road crew jokingly disassembled Lars’ drum kit, only to reassemble it so they could finish their set. At the end of Ozzy’s set, Ozzy invited Metallica back onstage to thank them for touring with him and to wish them luck in Europe. What a concert!
I was there that night at the Hampton Coliseum!!
That's epic
The recording of that night is fucking EPIC. Cliff’s background vocals on Creeping Death were legendary
I knew Cliff died in a bus crash but I didn't realise how horrific they way it happen. RIP Cliff Burton.
I was a huge Metallica fan during the early-mid 80s and me and my friends were devastated when it happened. Cliff was the soul of that band and Metallica would never be as good as those first 3 albums (in my book anyway).
Disagree. Cliff was important but certainly not the soul of the band. Are we ignoring what Hetfield has done since day 1? Or Lars? Without these two we have no band. C’mon guys I get because he died tragically he gets put on this pedestal but in all honesty Metallica would not be Metallica without James or Lars. If James left the band after Killemall bye bye Metallica. If Lars was fired he would’ve sued the band to extinction because he owns the band name and logo.
Cliff died and was replaced. You can’t replace the two guys steering the ship since day 1. Kirk can be replaced and should be.
@@Voyvoda1903 your mother
@Alabaster, oh well. SAD BUT TRUE!
Agreed. RIP Cliff
Dungeon Music we had Megadeth in case your stupid ass story turned true.
Cliff Burton was waaayyy too young to die like that. Imagine if he had lived to be with the rest of the guys at the HOF induction ceremony and celebrating with a wife and kids. Still v
ery sad 34 years later.
Imagine him and Randy Rhoads.
Cliff kept Lars in check.
Cliff kept an entire band in check.
They respect & love him enormously to this day, specially James & Kirk...
That definitely explains the late 1990s
It’s better he’s not in the band, ashamed he died though, because he would’ve been all in for Load and Reload and those albums suck ass.
Cliff was the soul of band. Don't get me wrong ... Metallica is Metallica. However, Metallica with Cliff was truly amazing. He was recognized as one of the best bassists at that time.
He was definitely original. But the soul of the band is still in the surviving 2 members that started the band. James and Lars. James pulls out the riffs. Lars structures the songs. Sometimes James even write some of Kirks solos on an 8 track and sped them up so Kirk would learn it at the time signature he’s supposed to play it on. James wrote the tapping solo part for One. Kirk wrote out the rest. Lars and James really carry the team.
Went to the 2nd Cliff Burton Day. Met his father Ray. I told him that his son's music got me through some dark times. He seemed to truly appreciate what I shared with him. Ray Burton also seemed to enjoy seeing my children there. It was a great day.
Ray Burton was an angel
Class acts seemed to run in the Burton family aye...?
We met Cliff in Edinburgh 13 days before his death, was a great guy, 20 mins of talking metal.
In my opinion Cliff was what made early Metallica good
it's not so much an opinion as it is an objective statement tbh
That truth in some ways Metallica was never the same again
I would argue that he was their best musician. James Hetfield is a monstrous rhythm guitar player, but Cliff Burton was heavily influenced by classical music and thought more like a composer than a standard headbanger.
in my opinion i think cliff was one of the first 'complicated' bassists like before cliff bassists didn't have a large role in a band but cliff proved them wrong like i can think of some good examples of when he played a big part in song writing there's stuff like Bell Tolls Orion Pulling Teeth Kotulu and so many more rip cliff
Well, Hetfield wrote all the songs, but OK, you oughta know.
it was sad that it either was gonna be cliff or kirk who was gonna die that day
The only nice guys in the band
And some people say it should’ve been Kirk and that makes me sick, nobody deserved to die that night but it’s also creepy how Cliff got Kirk’s bunk he drew the ace of spades, very creepy
subcomandante marcos maybe
@@mack7235 should have been the driver and cliff drove lol
@@cobysanderson8148 That's the power of fate man...
You dont have to be a Metal fan to recognize the brilliance of MASTER OF PUPPETS...and Cliff's genius is all over that album....R.I.P. bro.
I was just thinking about Cliff yesterday.
We think about Cliff all the time, and I hope he knows that
I think of Cliff EVERY TIME I listen Metallica. That's almost every day.
I'm a huge fan of them...
That’s a little disturbing that you’re thinking about this guy all the time and you never met him once or actually knew him. If you’re suffering from mental health issues I strongly suggest you seek help from a professional.
Me too, I was listening to anesthesia yesterday thinking about how we lost one of the greatest bassists of all time.
😢
This one hurts so much to hear. Kirk and Cliff pretty much gambled whom going to die, by a card game.
I know...it's pretty heavy stuff. I wonder if it still messes with Kirk to this day. I know it would mess me up bad...
@@hollywood2499 Check out Metallica: Back to the Front video on Metallica's YT page.
During the interview about Cliff Kirk literally sheds tears...Heartbreaking.
Sometimes I wonder what Metallica would be like if the reverse happened and Kirk was lost. Strange to imagine and that’s why I don’t think too hard on that one.
If you look at the scope of work Kirk put in after the black album you see the laziness in his playing. Uninterested solos. Too much wah. Using that same dribbling scale where he descends on the b string.
Now imagine a plethora of guitar players to choose from in that era. They could’ve gotten Alex Skolnick or maybe even Chris Poland. That would be insane to see.
But without Kirk you don’t get Enter Sandman. So you have to decided on the success of the Black album or possible semi success with an Accomplished guitar player.
@@titusprime5240 There would possibly be no Primus if that was the case. Not only this, but maybe Dave could've settled some shit with Metallica to play more with them.
RIP Cliff Burton such an amazing bassist gone way too soon
I’m glad to have seen Cliff live 3 times before he died. Every performance was progressively better each time. I can imagine he would’ve evolved into an even bigger icon today.
If you've never heard "anesthesia pulling teeth" do yourself a favor and look it up, epic!!! RIP Cliff
I remember reading Lars hated it when he first heard it. The only reason it made the album was to placate to Cliff so he wouldn’t bail on them. James convinced him to let it go on the record. Good choice. But after hearing it so many times I much prefer his simpler melodies on Orion than in Pulling Teeth.
There's at least 3 versions of Cliff playing it live on the VHS Cliff'Em All...
Also, my friend at Guitar Meets Science did a phenomenal cover this year!
Jim Martin from Faith No More was in Trauma, as well...
.... that deserves to be noted.
In the video Easy he wears "R.I.P, Cliff" T-shirt...
@Jerome Lund It's true!
I saw a clip of Trauma playing that "descending" riff from the start of the Tolls, played by Cliff, when he was in Trauma.
"Trauma" version was a bit longer...
I think You guys are talking about agents of misfortune
@@sopainstantanea4887 I think Agents of misfortune was a Trauma's single, from where that part has been taken by Cliff...
@@pantherofcarantania check it out man... It was the band with Mike Bordin and Jim Martin
Every time I think about Cliff it makes me cry. RIP Cliff Burton
💔😢
I met Cliff's dad in 2016 when my hotel was hosting the ticket distribution for a Metallica show at Amoeba in Berkeley. I also met the singer of Testament (who laughed when I called him Mr. Billy) and Mike Bordin that day.
Condolences to the Burton family. Can imagine loosing two of my children. May peace be with them.
I have always wondered where Ray Burton got his strength. He loss both of his sons when they where so young both in awful ways then a few years later (I think I read 1993) he lost his wife Jan as well.
I suppose it is possible he could have seen their deaths either way when you live to be nearly 95 but still took strength. Being a parent I not think I’d handle it as well as Ray did.
Sure Metallica would have been a different band if he lived, but not in the way most people believe. Cliff is frozen in time at 24 and there is not a dearth of personal information from him. According to the book 'Back to the Front' Cliff was fond of proclaiming 'Bach is god!' was excited to get field recordings from Elektra when they were signed and was infatuated with R.E.M.s album 'Life's Rich Pageant' at the time of his death. Just like the rest of the guys he would have grown in musical ability and taste. It's simply impossible to know what would have come had he lived
He would’ve made Load and Reload and possibly pushed for a Reloaded album. He was a bell bottom wearing hippy. Not this metal loving dude that Janes and Kirk were. He would’ve pushed for them to become a rock or blues band or ge would eventually quit to pursue his own musical interests. People hate to think that but Jason left for this reason alone. What makes people think Cliff wouldnt either.
@@Voyvoda1903 I completely agree. I feel that Metallica was Cliffs personal boost, to be able to find areas he wanted to pursue. I feel he might have made it to the Black album and probably would have left afterwards. Maybe, idunno. But, learning more and more about cliff makes me think he might have already been unhappy in the metal scene. Seeing how talks of firing Lars had come up with the rest of the guys.
But you’re pushing aside his burgeoning love of the Misfits. Not quite Bach or REM. Cliff did love music, and I would hope he would have left the band to continue his growth. But likely would have been able to continue playing and writing in Metallica.
The book, "To Live Is to Die," is on my bedside. Long live Cliff!
No one will ever be able to touch his legacy ever!! He was a legend and still the reason many young people pick up the bass today, he will forever live a legend!!
His epic solo anesthesia pulling teeth ... he started it by pulling a Jimmy Hendrix and ends his solo by pulling a Joe Satriani... both legends in their own right 🤘🤜🤛💪
makes me realize that he passed the same year Castlevania was born
i know that is random
Burton's sister is also a great lady
he would have been proud of her

Cliff said goodbye to the world after leaving us one of the best Metal albums ever made.
Cliff burton inspired me to play bass even though i was born 15-20 years after he past away... That means alot. I dont think he ever died as long as we keep living his legacy
one of my dearest bass players of all times along with krist novoselic
may burton's soul live forever Riding the Lightnings
I was sitting in history my junior year at Issaquah High School when a friend walked into class, headed over to two of us talking, and just said that Cliff Burton died yesterday. We just looked at him. My friend, Marty, said, "That's not funny. Don't joke about that." When we realized it was true, it was such a gut punch.
I remember when Metallica played the Paramount for "Ride the Lightning" and opening for Ozzy at the Tacoma Dome during "Master of Puppets".
The first show I saw after his death was in the Kingdome for Monster's of Rock in July of '88, just prior to "... And Justice For All"s release. Jason Newsted was great, and I don't want to take anything away from him, but they just didn't have the same feel as before. I've enjoyed the different eras of Metallica for multiple reasons, but, maybe, because I was in high school, and thrash was just starting, I always look back upon music that came out between 1982-'89 as the favorite of my life.
Thanks for the video.

Not sure where to leave requests so I'll throw one out here.I did love a video on the feud between Les Claypool and John Mayer because of the song Wynona's Big Brown Beaver.
I've never heard of this do you have anymore info
Apparently John Mayer thought the song was about his then-girlfriend Winona Ryder. And called Les Claypool out while on stage. that's all I know, but I don't make rock and roll history videos so I assumed he'd find more.
@@taco4242 thats nuts dam is there anyone mayer hasnt put the wood to
@@taco4242 Thought this might be interesting, but seems very unlikely. Wynona's (not even spelled the same as Winona Ryder's name) Brown Beaver came out 6 years before Mayer even released an album. Also, with the dozens of articles about John Mayer's dating history, not one that I can find lists any time he dated Winona Ryder. On top of that, Claypool has made it clear it wasn't about Ryder, but hinted that it might have been about Wynona Judd. The Claypool-Mayer thing just doesn't make much sense.
Jody Hewston And I’d bet dollars to donuts that if anyone had a big brown beaver between Judd and Ryder back in the day, it’d be Judd 🤣🤣🤣

It's strange when it hurts as though you were good friends with the person but never met them before.
Can you do a video on why the band wanted to fire Lars ? That'd be a cool video.
The saddest day in metal
Still the best bass player I ever saw live. Saw him in Bradford, England on the MOP tour. Of course next stop after the UK leg was Sweden...... Such a sad loss. I often ponder the old 'what if' Cliff was still in Metallica today? What wonders would he have helped create?
uploaded on my birthday... beautiful
In My Darkest Hour is my favourite metal song. Dave said in a Raw Power (a UK TV show in the '90s) that he was in a dark place when he wrote it, I had no idea he was singing about Cliff.
The most tragic part of this story is they never got around to firing Lars.
Cliff Burton was a true Gentleman, when Metallica/Anthrax played Dublin on Sunday September 14th 1986,l waited patiently outside their Hotel for three days previously with hundreds of others(they arrived on the Friday Morning in Dublin) all of us hoping to catch a glimpse of the band,Anthrax were coming and going from the Hotel and were really cool with the Fans( l went to see ALIENS with Anthrax sitting in the seats in front of me that Weekend) Kirk Hammett was so nice too and signed a drawing l did of him, it was unbelievable to meet him but Ulrich/Hetfield kept a very low Profile and we never saw them leave their Hotel Rooms once. Cliff? Cliff was a different story altogether, absolutely down to Earth and with no airs and graces. On the Friday Morning l first saw him surrounded by Fans and it was like "Oh Shit! There's Cliff Burton!" he signed everything thrust in front of him but then did something l have never seen before, sat down with us on a Bench and gave us money to buy Beers! He hung with us for at least an hour,l returned the Saturday Morning and there he was again, hanging outside the Hotel in Denim and kicking back with the fans,l was like "Wow,there's Cliff....again!" But still no Ulrich/Hetfield showing so l went back on the Sunday Morning and Cliff comes out of the Hotel,l just said "Hey Cliff!" Like he was a mate and he waved, sauntered up the Street, stopped, came back and asked me where he could get a takeout Beer ( this was Dublin 1986 on a Sunday Morning,it was'nt happening til midday at least) he shrugged and wandered off up the Street. Then the Gig that night happened,John Marshall on Guitar and Hetfield on Vocals and cast,it was Incredible, truly one of the best gigs of my life. You read about Cliff being a down to Earth guy well l can say he was sound as a pound to me,genuine and a very nice guy. R.I.P. Cliff.
When Cliff died so did Metallica's chance of ever writing another interesting time signature.
Orion is may favorite song. It's got so many good bass parts. Nothing else like it anywhere.
It is a true Testament of the influence Cliff has on the bass playing community. I was barely a year old when Cliff died and yet he is one of my biggest influences. As a teenager I had a poster of him shredding on his Rickenbacker on my bedroom wall. I would literally look up at him while I practice.

I was born about two weeks after Burtons death. Anyways Master of Puppets is one of my favorite Metallica albums. Sad how Cliff died but his contribution to music will live on in the recordings he was involved in. Dude was a bad ass on bass.
Throw your suggestions below and here's a great metallica story i did about why MTV banned the group from the VMA's czcams.com/video/MUyNOeadEGk/video.html

Pantera+David Allen Coe collaboration “Rebel Meets Rebel”
Tragic Tragic Tragic, Every title has tragic in it, I enjoy your content and am a subscriber, Its fucking tragic that you think that tragic is the only word in the English language that describes sudden death.
The death of Chuck Schuldiner
Cliff was one of the best bassists on the planet!!!! R.I.P Cliff!!
He didn’t even make it to the 27 club, that is tragic. Way to young to go but some times I quest it’s better to burn out than fade away but he had decades before he could’ve gone still.
I had a “Metal up your ass” shirt in high school. I loved that shirt and pretty sure my wife tossed it with a bunch of other shirts she didn’t care for. Granted by the time I got married that shirt was practically see through but was so comfortable though.
I got to see Metallica in ‘95 than ended up seeing Anthrax with Pantera and Coal Chamber later on. The ‘90s in the TampaBay area was great for metal shows. I went to dozens of metal shows.
He was too good to make the 27 club, so he started his own club, the 24 club. He's the only member. And it should stay that way.
The 27 club is a group of people that sold their souls for their fame. Cliff sold his time for his bass. There's a huge difference.
OK, maybe I should have done some research before I made my comment. I stand corrected by y'all.
Sad man died so young RIP brother
Best rock bassist EVER!!! Prove me wrong....
RIP Cliff
He was my favorite bassist of all time.
Cliff had such a unique headband too, always recognizable
I remember a Cliff Burton poster I had. It was a photo of him in front of the tour bus. He’s got his denim vest and hat on and holding his right arm out and his hand is formed like a claw. The magazine I got it from had the description “Bass god Cliff Burton, because you worship him”
I put the poster up on my wardrobe door, kneeled on the floor with my arms out and bowed benevolently before him.
I don’t usually cry about celebrity deaths but that happened to me when I heard about what happened to Cliff.
