Do you have any regrets about your gray hair transition? Let me know below 👇🏻

Yes, I do have one regret.
I wish I had been more patient and not tried to have the old growth bleached and dyed to try an match the new growth. It looked amazing for the first few weeks, but then not so much and it really damaged my hair.
Now I’m over 2 years in and I would NEVER dye my hair (well with permanent Color) again. My hair is the healthiest it has been in years, and also the longest!
I find that some hair colourists do not want to necessarily encourage people to go natural because.. that is what they do for a living! It is an art from too for some. But to your point - If i decide to go natural, that is my choice and someone can give me their thoughts- in a constructive way. And if someone chooses to Color their hair, well that is their choice and who am I to judge? Thank you for posting your video - I’m sure it will be helpful to people who are still on the fence :)

My stylist had the same reaction, she was very unsupportive. I never went back to her again. I found a new stylist and as luck would have it, she was in the process of transitioning her mom to gray. She had only positive things to share with me. I only have about one inch left of my old hair color. It took about 15 months of cold turkey. I loved the process and discovering my natural color. I have a mix of silver, white and dark. I have never been happier with my VERY HEALTHY hair AND my stylist.

I really appreciate this story. My current stylist or hair dresser has done my wedding hair and from my early high school years. I really like her. It’s interesting because she isn’t into gray hair and luckily for me, I chose the cold turkey grow it out option so I don’t need her help. However, she has happily given me trims and blow outs and trimmed my 3 daughters hair no problem. So overall I’m content with staying with her. She hasn’t trash talked gray hair but said she just prefers color. She has been nice and positive with me for 7 months since I stopped growing it out.
Regardless, if a person stylists does a bad job, doesn’t listen and discourages a woman from going gray, I agree they need to find a new stylist immediately. In my situation I find comfort with staying with my stylist for now. Thanks for this helpful video.

You’re welcome! I’m so glad you liked it. I think your stylist sounds great - if somebody doesn’t like gray hair, but they don’t Trash Talk it and they still take care of it without complaining, I think that’s awesome. ❤️

I'm just starting my journey and everyone told me you aren't ready to do this and it's rude! My stylist wasn't thrilled either, but wasn't rude. I'm sorry you were treated like this!!! I'm in my 60s and so done! I'm looking for a new stylist! My roots are so shiny and white!!! I'm hoping for less frizz. Thanks for the tips. ❤

I stopped washing my hair about 10 years ago with the exception of washing it to put some henna on it; which I did until about 5 years ago. I woke up one day and was due to put some henna on my hair and I just didn't want to do it anymore so that was it. No salon. No chemicals. No nothing. Never looked back. Don't wash my hair and am going au naturelle; I love it. And thank goodness it is coming in nicely. My niece said to me a few weeks ago that she loved my hair and she loved how my gray was coming in. She is 17 and that made me feel good. My kids tell me it looks good but they are my kids. haha! 🙂

I went through a similar experience. (my pic is old lol) I haven't updated it yet. I went cold turkey from dark brown hair to mostly gray now Oct 2021. Two years now since color and I have mixed feelings about it. I probably have one or two more trims to get all the dye off. I think the times I feel bad about it have nothing to do with it but during some marital infidelity/betrayal issues by my husband and I automatically wondered if gray was ugly on me. Otherwise, I've had more compliments from strangers. My hair stylist I had been going to for 16 years told me "your face is too young for gray hair" "it will make you look so old" and she made bad faces every time I mentioned. I soon stopped going to her for anything and found a much better stylist closer to my home and recommended by a lady at the bank who had beautiful white gray hair. My stylist colors her hair but she has been very supportive and encouraging. I don't know why we give our stylists so much power to hurt us but I guess it's like any other relationship if they are not kind we can choose to go to another. I haven't contacted my old stylist in 3 years now.

Jennifer, I'm so sorry you went through that experience with your husband. That would shake anyone's confidence, for sure. :-(
It sounds like we had almost exactly the same experience with our hairdressers! I'm glad you found out who is supportive and that you like now. It makes a huge difference!

As a hairstylist I always listen to what my clients want. I go thru a checklist of: Are you ready to go gray.. some will keep it and love it but some clients Freak out and think OMG I look old.. but in the end it looks amazing I transition more women every day to going gray and they love it. Blessings to my Silver Sisters🙌🏽🥰

I’m a hairstylist - make up artist of 40 years and I’ve gone gray and then dyed my hair brown again and I’m going gray again because I really love my white hair and my husband loves my white hair.. now I starting going gray as a teenager at 17 years old.. just the sides and down to my neckline on the sides.. The rest stayed black soi looked like Pepe LePew the skunk in cartoons.. until now at 55 and the middle of my hair is finally going gray! Yes I’ve helped my Silver Sisters go gray and transitioned many clients to gray. Now it’s my turn and I love every strand !!❤

My hair is all salt and pepper now, and I do have a hard time with stylists. I have a hard time getting good haircuts so often try new stylists, and they never tell me my hair color looks good. They usually make a comment about how I don’t dye it or ask whether I don’t dye it (which I obviously don’t). If anything, they tell me my grey hairs are frizzier and harder to handle. They don’t make me feel good about it. They make me feel like they think I’m somewhat of a freak, but I think I ignore it as best as I can.

    • @KatieGoesPlatinum

That is so frustrating! If you have an Aveda salon near you, try them - they don't pull this kind of stuff on their clients (at least, not in my experience).
My gray hair is soft, shiny, and smooth but I still have had people insist to me that gray hair is always coarse and frizzy. Irritating!

@@Dogandcatmom51 Maybe just grow it and invest in some beautiful clips and scrunchies? I have long hair; going gray; and pull it back usually; and it is amazing what you can do with clips. I use the clips with the plastic over the metal part so I dont get any breakage. I do get a trim now and then but keep it long. 🙂 I also find an eye lash curler and a little tinted lip balm goes a long way too when I want to feel a little more put together. haha! But you should be able to find a better person to do your hair. My gal is awesome. She happens to be one of my best friends; but she is just an awesome person (thus why she is one of my best friends!)

I just left my colorist of many years after growing out my gray. I stuck it out with her but her haircuts got worse the more gray I grew out and she ended every appt with “some day you’ll want me to highlight your hair again.” Among additional issues, I was done with her. I know it was a loss of money for her, but she ended up being kind of rude to me after going to her 10 years😔

      Agreed.
I didn't have that problem since I cut and colored my own hair for many years.
I've been silver now for 5 years and so happy to be free!
But I agree, move on from a rude and uncaring stylist asap.

As a hairstylist my goal is that you’re happy with your hair. I have many women bleaching tinting glossing.. and then I have a group of women who told me to strip the color away and let their silver hair fly.. My clients who are letting their gray hair shine are from all walks of life and they are gorgeous strong and determined. They are my SHEROES!! I’m very blessed that I have so many strong beautiful fierce women and I have the incredible honor and privilege of knowing them and being their stylist. And more importantly their friend 🥰

Thanks! I wish I had done the same - I usually alternated between going to a colorist and dyeing it myself but I was terrible at it. Often, the back of my head didn't match the front (according to my friends).
