A little about me and this channel:
My name is James Aubrey IV and I just recently graduated college from Iowa State University. After college I decided to take a leap of faith. So I moved to San Diego California to pursue my passion for videography/ CZcams. Overall I'm a pretty chill person, outside of CZcams I like to longboard, dance, play video games, lift weights and hangout with my friends. I know that success on CZcams won't happen overnight but I'm willing to stay patient and put in the work to try to prefect my craft daily. This CZcams channel will be centered around my life after college. You will be able to see all of the ups and downs on my journey to success. So if you like the content make sure you subscribe so you can be apart of the Rome Life Family. (Let's build our own personal Rome's together.)
What is the Rome Life ? And What does it mean to be apart of it?
Rome Life is something I started during my Sophomore year of high school (one of the worst times in my life) it started off as me documenting my journey to recovery from my shoulder surgery but eventually it turned into a platform that I could use to encourage myself as well as others to chase our dreams.
Rome Life isn't just a saying it's a way of life and for the people who want to be apart of it have to realize that. Rome wasn't built in a day it took a lot of handwork time and most importantly patience. So you can't expect your dreams to be any different
This is a reaction video used to educated and give my feedback on the song and artist

Listen to this entire album. It’s one of the greatest albums ever recorded.
Absolutely agree!!
Back “in the day” I listened to this album on cassette and played it on loop. So start at the beginning (this song) play the album all the way through. After Inner City Blues, the strings from What’s Going On start and bleed right back to the first track- it’s awesome.
Listen to this Album and you'll never look at the world the same again. This is what we listened to as teenagers💜
Yesthis album is àn urban opera!!
Nobody but Marvin Gaye and The Funk Brothers could have pulled this off, with the incomparable James Jamerson on bass!
Civil Rights , police brutality, MLK’s murder and Vietnam- he captures the sadness.
Some things never change
It breaks my heart that this song is still so relevant today.
Marvin is crying right now seeing what's goin' on...😥
2022 it's STILL the GREATEST ALBUM EVER RECORDED.
Listen to Marvin Gaye, Mercy Mercy Me
Detra Turpin.....that’s my absolute favorite Marvin Gaye song. It’s really sad that What’s Going On, and Mercy Mercy Me are still so very relative in 2020, though.
Yes. Mercy mercy me
Oh yeah
Yes, you will love it
yes great song, Robert Palmer done a great cover of that song, love them both.
This song was released in 1971, 49 years ago and it has the exact same meaning now as then. He was singing about police brutality, inequality, social injustice, and protest. Those things are the exact things that are going on in America today. By listening to it you'd never know that he was talking about social issues four decades ago. Marvin was always smooth. In his early years, he sang about love but in his later years, he tried to open everyone's eyes to what was going on in our society.
1971= 49 years ago and I agree
@@leannewilson7184 You're right Leanne, boy I'm old. I'd better change it.
What would the world look like if we had listened
@@Peter-oh3hc Quite different that's for sure.
Back when this song was written and brilliantly performed, those things were real, serious concerns. Those things aren't happening in America today except in the race baiting playbook of Democrat politicians and the "minds" of the ignorant who buy into it.
It's not just that he's smooth, or the music is groovy... It's the content - the message that he delivered so smoothly. So needed back then, and just as relevant and needed today!
This song is on a mixed tape I made yrs ago I entitled "The Struggle." Temps, Ball of Confusion; Isley Bros, Harvest for the World; Gil Scott Heron, Angel Dust; Stevie Wonder, You Haven't Done Nothing. Music that has a societal message.
I guess Im asking the wrong place but does anybody know a tool to get back into an Instagram account??
I somehow lost the login password. I appreciate any help you can offer me
@Jerry Kayson instablaster :)
Exactly! ❤️
@Glass24
A lot of songs with "Great Messages" don't always sound good. There's a fine line between poignant and preachy. However, WGO is beautifully sung; written, arranged; produced, thought out, and played (by Marvin; The Great Funk Bros, and Detroit Philharmonic) with a great message to boot.
“Why’s this dude so smooth?” Because he’s Marvin Friggin’ Gaye that’s why.
That's exactly what I said!!!
The man practically invented smooth.
Said the same out loud to James!
Marvin wrote the whole album, lyrics and instrumentals, and he recorded it over the objections of Motown's owner Barry Gordy. It wound up being one of the most important albums of the decade of any sort. The whole album is extraordinary.
Let's Get It On and Heard it Through the Grapevine.
Its more than heart breaking how he died
Joe Campos Yeah I know. 😢
Him and Roger Troutman got killed in similar ways.
Very sad.
He came from an abusive father.
It’s also heartbreaking that nothing has changed

Family violence will always be part of the human condition...and always a tragedy.
On 9/20/20 Rolling Stone Magazine updated their ranking of the 500 Greatest Albums of all time.. Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going on Album landed at #1. It is a concept album. Each song blended into the next. Marvin’s brother was in Vietnam and Marvin had some things he wanted to say about the state of the world and it’s ecology.
Richly deserved. It took them about half a century to work out that the very best efforts of the holy trinity of white 60s rock (the Beatles, Dylan, the Stones) were immediately overshadowed by the 1971 release of Marvin Gaye's generational masterpiece, which distilled the intense hope, disappointment, tragedy, pain and bewilderment of that decade better than any of them had ever managed to do, and which, by tapping into the rich veins of jazz & funk they had mostly eschewed, did it with musical values that far exceeded what even their boldest experiments had been able to bring into popular music. But as they say: better late, than never.
So glad to hear that. This song has been my #1 since it came out, and it always takes me right back to those times, yet still so relevant. The entire album is a masterpiece.
He would be happy.
Been waiting for this. Thank you. Marvin was a true musical genius who can never be replaced.
Gone WAY too soon.
YOU BETTA BELIEVE IT!!
R.I.P. Marvin!
What's Going On is considered one of the greatest albums of all time (Inner City Blues is also on this same album). It covers race, war, poverty, equality, ecology/climate change, social justice, in a brilliant package of great music like this. Marvin was a genius and a legend, and left us way too soon.
Rolling Stone in 2020 listed “What’s Going On” as the best album EVER (Top 500 albums).
Yes, this is definitely one of those “drop the needle and let it play” albums.
“Why’s this dude so smooth?” That’s probably the best description of the man who may very well be the greatest singer of all time
Marvin Gaye was amazing across all genres. You may want to check out Otis Redding, "Sitting on the Dock of the Bay" Another great performer.
Def. Otis Redding. Another great talent who died far too young.
I still get teary eyed after all these years , LOVED this MAN
You too, BROKE my heart and to this day I still haven't gotten over it!
This album was released almost 50 years ago. Has much changed? Marvin was one of he very few Black artists who commented on social injustice.
Nothing has changed at all
@@personalcheeses8073 In some ways it's improved for minorities, like with the Civil Rights Act. But the underlying problems still exist.
No - he was one of many.
@@Lee-wh2bg Which other Black artists would you put in this group?
@@klnjc Sam Cooke- A Change Is Going To Come...
"Let's Get It On"....."Sexual Healing".......2 of his BEST songs!!!
I want you
Lets get it on
I love that song. He was a awesome singer and performer.
Distant Lover and Anger are my faves
This is one of my favorite songs of all time.
I saw a documentary about him and he would do things like sing laying down or sing to the mic from down a hall way to change the sound, vibe, and the feeling his voice would project a real genius of music
michael cantwell There’s a vid of him singing while lying down around here.
@@gymeni And his voice is perfect while doing it.
He also layered his own voice through the track.
Rip! King! One of the greatest Motown artist of the 60s, 70s, 80s era. This song is so relevant of what's going on Today. ✊🖤
Yes indeed!
React to Marvin Gaye, What’s Happening Brother, Let’s Get It On
This song and Mercy Mercy are my favorites. still have my original vinyl I play all the time. Dang son I'm a 70 year old white woman and I have all the great black singers music from the 50's, 60's and 70's....you need to delve into the history of great black singers that are unparalleled today.
I completely agree with you. I am wondering why he wasn't brought up with this music. It's timeless and it's part of his heritage. It's such a shame that he's just now hearing all this great music. Hopefully he will pass it along to his children.
@@58fcorley I was raised partly by my white grandmother, but I was still exposed to black culture through my grandfather's side of the family. I'm trying to figure out how he wasn't. I mean, yeah, we all have different experiences, but it's an inside joke in the black community how when you hear Motown playing Saturday morning, you get up and start to clean.
Breaks my heart that this wonderful, sweet man had to die so young and by his father's hand. Can you imagine the music he still had within him?
More than the smoothness was the message, We don't need to escalate...only love can conquer hate."
React to Marvin Gaye "Distant lover"
and "I want you" they are 2 of his most underrated songs
michael cantwell Madonnas cover of I want you is amazing
Not underrated at my house!
One of my all-time favorites from him!! 💙💙💙💙
I’m old enough to remember when this came out decades ago.Incredible then, incredible now. RIP Marvin.
Sade "smooth operator"
Gorgeous singer with a gorgeous voice
YES, THE GREAT MUSIC OF MY CHILDHOOD...NEVER GET TIRED OF THIS SONG. THANK YOU.
When I first heard this song it really sent chills through my body his voice was beautiful I kept playing it over and over still great Ain't no mountain with Tammi Terelle his motown days thank you 😷✌
Why is Marvin so smooth, because he's Marvin... that's why.
That Part!!!!!!
He sounded just as good in person that’s his voice nothing to do with the back up singers are good but this is Marvin we love them
This is one of the best songs of all time! So sad how he died.
" why is this guy so smooth? " It's MARVIN !
This song is 50 years old, released in 1971 and listen to the lyrics, nothing has changed in this world, we've got to be the change for our future generations. Marvin Gaye tried to tell us 50 years ago, we need to unite
"Trouble Man" soundtrack
OK Falcon, lol.
This song is as meaningful today as it was when it was released....✌️❤️
marvin changed an entire generation. so glad you actually chose this song . one of the best songs ever recorded .
My favourite Marvin album, I probably have played this a 1000 times!! Play the whole album you will be singing Marvin’s tunes for days💗💕😎
Listen to him sing acapella
James, His "Lets Get It On", "Sexual Healing" are next for you! Lots of smooth soul in the 60's, 70's. Al Green, Barry White just to name a few...
He’s a legend. I could play this all day. It’s just beautiful.❤️
I cry everytime 😥😥 I hear this song. My dad is from the "peace and love" era and introduced me to Marvin. It's ironic he mentions "father, father, father!! We don't need to escalate.." considering to what happened to the dude. A true legend an icon to the afro-american communitiy. I'm not afro I'm polynesian. Respect!🙏
I heard it through the Grapevine. How sweet it is to be loved by you.
Only love can conquer hate. Love love love your reaction James ❤️
Classic By Marvin Gaye!! Silhouette Voice!!
Full of soul and POWERFUL!!!🎤🎶
Marvin Gaye has one of the best floating smooth and soulful voices ever!!!
So is there somewhere else we can throw out suggestions because I've been requesting Joe Cocker - With a Little Help From Your live at Woodstock for a while now. You'd think with you doing at least 5 a day you would've got to it by now
I would also like to know. >'ve been trying to get him to listen to Benny Goodman "clarinet a la king" and another ive noticed repeatedly asks for "long train running" Who knows
Oh yeah Joe Cocker. Saw him play live 5 times. Still miss him so much.
That film of him at woodstock just shows how much energy he put into his songs. Yes he was drunk and high. At the time he rarely wasnt like alot of musicians at the time. Hence his "dancing". He gave up drugs but kept drinking. Watching him on stage was like heaven itself.
React to Donna summer I feel love best disco song for all time
yes
one of the best songs ever recorded ...... marvin was great .
Marvin Gaye was a musical wizard.........after leaving Motown he was able to show the world just how great his genius was!!!!!!
Before he was a star he actually played drums in the Motown house band (not all the time, but some of the time when the main cats wasn't available).
React to Marvin Gaye and Tami Terrell You're all I Need.
Please play Cold by Chris Stapleton it was released last week bone chilling man. Thanks
MARVIN GAYE IS LIT BRO!!!
One of my favorite ARTISTS OF ALL TIME!!!
Berry Gordy and Motown had the BEST MUSIC for all time!!
Long Train runnin by The Doobie Brothers.
Awesome choice.
Never heard it before I will check it out too.
"What's going On" is a classic. I really wish they made more socially conscious music like this today.
I'd really like to see you react to "Stand Tall" by Burton Cummings
czcams.com/video/M0Wd8rGWbA0/video.html
I've been suggesting this one to reactors for months now.I hope someone will finally do it."I'm Scared" is another great Burton Cummings song that I have been suggesting.
@@resin3100my My mom used to be president of a Burton Cummings fan club back in the late 90's to early 2000's. She used to go to multiple shows a year and even dragged me to a few of them. I got to meet Burton when I was 9 years old in 1995. He shook my hand and told me "See you when you're a rock star kid."
@@JimmyNotes Cool.I always loved his voice and think that he should be considered when discussing"best singers".
@@resin3100my I totally agree. I feel like Burton Cummings is grossly underrated. And he's still rocking out in his early 70s.
This music is as relevant today as it was when it was released.
I love every single solitary song this man sang/recorded throughout his life....he was otherwordly.....my favorite singer/arranger/performer in the whole wide world!
RIP Marvin Gaye....the Prince of Soul....❤️🙏🎶🎵🎤💖
This song takes me back every time. Marvin Gaye is as warm & smooth as melted butter. Beautiful 💛🎶
He’s so smooth because he’s Marvin Gaye, and they’ll never be another. You have only hit the top of the iceberg of Marvin’s music. From the 60’s to the 79’s to the 80’s, God rest his soul.
Marvin is Legend!
Such a timeless message.Relevant then and now.
Shows the genius of Marvin Gaye.
The magic of James Jamison holding down the bass lines...Brilliant! This song is timeless with Marvin’s message his voice is golden!
Pure Genius how Marvin Gaye could sound so Smooth, so cool and still get his message across to every generation that hears it....
I went on a listening spree when I first heard this album back in April 2019. 4 months straight I’d play this album 1-2 times a day. I’ve never ever been obsessed with an album before or since. It’s my favorite album now. Highly recommended!
One of the Greatest.
Marvin Gaye, one of the all time greats. The man could sing.
1971 One of my all time favorites. Just love this.
The Sound of Motown! I fell in love with Motown through Marvin Gaye. He did have that soulful, smooth sound to his voice. On April 1, 1984, the day before his 45th birthday, Gaye was shot dead by his father, Marvin Gay Sr. at their house in West Adams, Los Angeles, after an argument. RIP, Marvin.
One of the best albums ever recorded! We lost him in a tragic way may he rest in peace! His music will live on forevermore!
1of my fav singers of all time. Marvin's voice is butter. Welcome to my world. I got old records of his I still listen to.
The GENIUS of Marvin Gaye on display!!
This song is pure synergy to the listener. The combination of the lyrics, music and his singing is greater than each by themselves. Glad you finally got to hear it.
I marched for Civil Rights, and Marvins songs were anthems for a whole generation.
His voice was Magic. He made You feel what's going on. RIP Amigo
The counter - melodies harmonies make this very moving , combined with Marvin's great soul.
Marvin Gaye - Distant Lover live in Oakland 1974 - the best, most otherworldly live performance by anyone ever
Not only one of my favorites from Marvin, but one of the premiere moving songs with powerful message from his era that still seems relevant listening to it all of these 50 years later.
His music was his heart. You're right, he can sing anything and make is touch your soul. He is missed for sure!
There are just some songs that you can remember exactly where you were the first time you heard it. This is one of those songs. I was 13 in 1971 and watching some people playing handball and it came on over the speakers. I love it!
Everything out of his mouth is superb. Listen to all of his music baby boy.. he doesn't ever disappoint
This is guy is angelical his voice is so talented and smooth wow I don’t know what to say straight up from a Mexican like me omg
Marvin Gaye was Brilliant. I Miss him and his music✨✨🎼🎶🎵
The layered vocals, of Marvin though!!! Brilliant!!!!!
I'm 62 and so lucky for the music we had, every radio station played all kinds of music all day and night long.
I was born & raised in Detroit, Michigan. When I was 13 years of age, after hearing Marvin Gaye's music I had to meet him! I had every album (LP & single) Marvin Gaye ever made! I did not know what a “Concert” was, and I did not care about "getting in trouble", but I snuck out the house, went to Cobo Hall, and somehow made it to the front row! Marvin HELD MY HAND and sang a part of "Distant Lover" to me. Don't get your hopes up! There will never be another Marvin Gaye! My poor Mother...If I didn't play Distant Lover one million times I've never played it! I am BLESSED to have not only been born during the development of Motown, but in Detroit! Peace
Great choice of song. Marvin Gaye just oozes sheer class!!
He's so smooth cause he's Marvin...one and only!
He's so smooth because he is Marvin Gaye. Thats a Bad Man..His music inspired us all.
Awesome song off an awesome album. Period. Check out the entire album when you can. And check out these other Marvin Gaye classics too: "I Heard It Through the Grapevine", "How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved by You)", "Too Busy Thinking About My Baby", "Sunny", "Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)", "Let's Get It On", "Got to Give It Up" and many more! Plus, check out his duets with Tammi Terrell -- "Ain't No Mountain High Enough" and "Ain't Nothing Like the Real Thing".
It's amazing how many time this song plays in my head with all the insanity going on today. It's a timeless song about someone asking those around him what all the nonsense is about. I Love this song so much!
This song and,' Mercy Mercy Me' are his absolute BEST songs, in my opinion. I loved this song back in the 70's and still one of my favorite today!
It's much deeper than being smooth, the meaning of those words, reflect than & now! Its a cry to do & be better!
Marvin is still asking What's Going On, and most of us still couldn't answer him.
Singing backup: Detroit Lions players Mel Farr and Hall of Famer Lem Barney.
Marvin Gaye was the master of soul, smoother than smooth. I'm glad you're getting into him. Keep going.
He's so smooth because he's Marvin Gaye! :) That is Marvin Gaye!
Marvin is the smooth vibe KING!
He is so smooth because he is Marvin freaking Gaye (the man) and always will be.
I think it applies for today. Yeah, I am old enough to see him in concert . . . which I did . . . twice. Listen to it all, every cut on the album.
