Eruption Number 9 Started Strong But The Situation Looks Better At Dawn

  • Huge amount of lava is on it's way to the Blue Lagoon and the Power Plant. Not only is it more total volume than during the last eruption, all of it is heading to the Power Plant this time but the lava barriers around Grindavik took got a large share of the lava last time. So this is more and less what we expected and it gets harder and harder to protect the extremely valuable infrastructure around there. I'm off to Reykjavik now from where I will be doing filming to the volcano the nest days and feel free to use the Coffee button to support my missions to bring back interesting footage.
    Update August 23: 10:00 AM
The second fissure the opened up at 02:00 might have prevented a major disaster since the lava fill be carried further north than before, out of harms way. This looks way better now than last night!

Good afternoon Gylfi. Thanks for the update with regards to the situation of the new volcanic eruption. When I was travelling to Keflavik Airport at 4am this morning, I got to see the eruption from the road. Couldn't believe that I got to see the eruption this morning. When my plane was taxiing before take off, I could see the eruption and the large amount of smoke coming from the eruption. But my plane took off to the north before turning south. Stay safe on your travels Gylfi. I had a brilliant time in Iceland, despite the poor weather. I will definitely come back to Iceland in the future.

Same for me, it was 'awesome' to see how close the eruption was to the road so unreal. Driving from Keflavik probably had an even better view. When I took off at 8AM the eruption had decreased significantly or maybe it was the daylight dim it a bit, could see it from the plane but it was way more smoke and the lava didnt come through on pictures I took. I was first sad I couldnt choose my seat on my usual side of the plane (A seats), but now I was happy to be actualy on the right side to see the eruption. :)

When you look at those surrounding hills, you can begin to see how high the lava can stack. If the current series of eruptions persist for long enough, all of the protective barriers will be overcome by lava. It also means that the power station, Blue Lagoon, Grindavik and the surrounding farms are at risk of being swamped by lava. The Volcano Island is growing itself.

Astonishing to look at that long fissure gushing lava fountains along its entire, though intellectually I realize that this is neither unusual for the start of these events nor particularly large on the scale of past eruptions, both during human history and especially during geologically older times. I’m glad you have better equipment now and your car is in running condition. The best of good wishes to you as you pursue your mission and to the Icelandic people whose lives are affected by this eruption.

The Lava highway is going to end up with so much lava over it that it will need to be a lava tunnel

Thank you for the update - it was so hard to see from the webcams in the dark, but your explanation with the daylight footage was incredibly helpful!
Your footage is always amazing, so there is no need to worry about that - I am certain it will be absolutely captivating.

Thankyou for you commentary. We don't get much info apart from your podcast in Australia accept in huge eruptions. I hope the next eruptions go as planned and save your town, people, livestock if any and crops.
We will be thinking of you here in Australia.
    All the best.
PS could you get a very close shot of a crater or mountain when you use an arrow to point the location on this information. It is hard to make out when you don't know landscape but are very interested if it's safe to do so.
    Keep safe.
