  • A detailed comparison of the loveliest editions of Kay Nielsen's illustrations of the East of the Sun, West of the Moon ((Click more for links to the books) - one by the Folio Society (a lovely facsimile of the original classic) and one by Taschen (a beautifully redesigned and oversized feast of beautiful images).
    Some book links below are affiliate links for which I may be compensated.
    ►Taschen's edition is available new, although the later editions ditched the fiddly paper slipcase (seriously - buy it today - it's absolutely stunning and you will not regret it): tidd.ly/22156861
    ►The Folio Society edition is out of print, but you can usually find copies second hand without too much trouble - just have patience and wait for a reasonably priced one to surface: bit.ly/FSEastWest
    ►Although I didn't have it to show in the video, the Calla Editions book is very similar to the FS edition - it's cloth bound and the image reproductions are very marginally less sharp, but it's still available new and may be more affordable, depending where you live: tidd.ly/834d848f

    this video is an enormous pubic service for both the publishers & we consumers. as in other comments, one wants both books here, with this fair and faithful presentation and writeup, praising both works for their intrinsic advantages. thank you so much for this video! (when i get a chance, i will look at all of your videos!)

      Robert Plautz oh, thanks for the lovely kind words - I hope you find some more books you like in the other videos 💕

    Oh, I really appreciate this side by side comparison video! I have had the Taschen edition for a few years now, but it's increasingly been gnawing at me if I should get the Folio version as well, the binding design is just so beautiful. I'm very glad to see a new video from you, they are always so inspiring and well made. :)

      Thanks so much for the kind words Laura! Yes, the Folio binding for this one is so elegant. But I think I prefer the larger (and more plentiful) images in the Taschen. (However, as you can see, I ended up somehow justifying owning both, ha!)

      Yves Forbes Flores it’s one of my favourite myths. There is also a version of it in Andrew Lang’s Blue Fairy Book.

      Have you seen the Calla edition? I almost got it because it was on sale... but since I don't own a single book by Calla I wasn't sure about the quality...

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 6 lety +3

      BookCravings Yes, internally the Calla is very much like the FS edition (they are both facsimiles). The biggest difference is the binding (I think the FS colour and material is superior, but the Calla is still very nice and sturdy - basically the Calla are high end standard publications and FS are low end fine press). I think there is a slight decrease in image reproduction for the Calla compared to FS but you have to look fairly closely to notice it. The paper is much thinner in the Calla, but I don’t mind that (I need the space in my bookshelves, ha). I have several Calla and like them (they are much cheaper than fine press alternatives), and have a vid in the works comparing the Calla Peter Pan to the FS one which should be ready soon too - that might help 😀

    Are you familiar with the Calla Editions version? It's comparable to the Folio Society version but is undoubtedly less expensive.

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi! Yes, I have many Calla Editions - they are excellent value. For this particular book though, the Calla size is smaller than usual, and I found the images not quite as sharp, so from that point of view I wouldn't say it quite stands up to the production quality of either the Taschen or the FS editions. The cloth binding is nice though, and it may be more affordable depending on where you live, particularly if someone is looking for a new book - although the Taschen was just recently reprinted without the flimsy paper 'case'.

  • @hectorrobertocontrerasmiranda

    ughh...
    i think i have a problem
    first i bought that Taschen, or at least i thought i had until i received it and realized there's an abridged small edition that looks identical on online photos and you won't notice if you don't know there are 2 sizes available from Taschen. but it is adorable and i got in on sale so i kept it. this was 2019
    last year i finally found a decently priced new copy of the original size (read 1 or 2 USD lower than the suggested price with free shipping, instead of the more expensive second hand copies, or the ridiculously priced new copies, neither of which included shipping). i love them both and i was perfectly happy with just 2 sizes of the same edition, one to hold and the other to immerse myself on the illustrations
    but then
    the Calla edition went on sale around my birthday, i bought it a few weeks later (a total steal! the cheapest of the 3 even when my first copy was less than half off!), and that one is also beautiful! even if it's not an exact reproduction of the 1914 first american Doran edition.
    naturally, now i also want the FS and i want to cry because that's not what i signed up for the first time i saw this video who knows how long ago!
    i mean i was happy with the digital edition i got in 2016!

      @BeautifulBooks  Před 2 lety

      Haha, I love this story - book collecting is such a slippery slope. 💕 (Except for the part about being tricked by online photos with editions that look similar but aren’t. That’s so frustrating!)

  • @orendo
    @orendo Před 4 lety +1

    I just bought the Taschen edition and it didn't come with a slipcase. The book was factory shrinkwrapped without a slipcase. Perpahs they got rid of it in recent printings due to its flimsiness? Or perhaps it was an exclusive for ordering from somewhere?

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 4 lety +2

      I bought the original edition when it came out, and they all had the paper slipcase (which was indeed very flimsy). It was out of print for about a year, and has only just come back into print, so I assume from your experience that the new print run doesn’t have the slipcase? Sometimes the early print runs have features that later ones don’t. Which is annoying when they don’t let you know about the change! But truly, you’re not missing much, it is really just very thin cardboard and I worry about tearing every time!

    • @orendo
      @orendo Před 4 lety +3

      @@BeautifulBooks Yes, annoying, especially as Amazon still displays the slipcase on the product page. I looked for the printing number inside the book but it seems that Taschen doesn't note it. In any case, it's a beautiful book and I'm sure I'll enjoy it for years to come. Thanks for the helpful comparison!

    Anyways since when did you start reading books? I started reading books at 4 or 5 years old because my mom would always read me children's stories

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 6 lety +1

      Yes, me too. I taught myself to read from watching my mother read to me at around the same age, and then pretty much read anything I could get my hands on (not always things that were appropriate for a kid to read either, ha). Very lucky to have mothers who loved reading too ❤

      Beautiful Books What are the books that you read in your childhood days? Mine have to be fairy tales like Cinderella and Snow White and Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast and other fairy tales

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 6 lety +1

      Yves Forbes Flores oh, everything! By the end of primary school I had read our entire library! I guess the most memorable books apart from fairy tales and folklore were children’s classics like Alice in Wonderland and Pippi Longstocking and Pollyanna, animal stories like Wind in the Willows and Watership Down, fantasy series like Narnia and Lord of the Rings, ‘adventure’ books like the Famous Five (I particularly loved long series because it meant I could keep getting new books, ha). (This list could go on for days...) What are your memorable children’s books?

    • @BeautifulBooks
      @BeautifulBooks  Před 6 lety +1

      Ps this list probably makes me sound like I was born in 1940s England, haha - I basically just read all the books I could find and a lot of them were obviously British classics...
