    Here is the Folio Society standard edition of 'The Call of Cthulhu & Other Weird Stories' by H.P. Lovecraft with illustrations by Dan Hillier.
    ABOUT THE BOOK
    "The birth of the modern horror story can be traced to the dark visions that crept from the febrile imagination of H. P. Lovecraft at the beginning of the last century. The alien gods, death cults and forbidden tomes that cast their maddening shadows over of his fictitious New England would introduce the world to a new set of terrors, reflecting the strange, uncaring universe being unraveled by physics and cosmology. These ‘weird’ tales, and their vast influence, have since carved their creator a tentacle-shaped throne among the monoliths of American literature." [1]
    BINDING & PAPER
    The book is bound in a duotone cloth with the colours green and purple. It's smyth-sewn, with spot-varnished endpapers and printed on Abbey Wove paper in Italy. The illustrations are printed on a different photo paper with the exception of the title page which is also on Abbey Wove. The headband is red and the top pages are gilded.
    CONTENT
    The book includes a preface by Alan Moore, an introduction by the Lovecraft scholar S.T. Joshi, summaries of the stories and a note on the text by S.T. Joshi as well.
    The stories included are:
    Dagon
    The Statement of Randolph Carter
    Facts Concerning the Late Arthur Jermyn and His Family
    Celephaïs
    Nyarlathotep
    The Picture in the House
    The Outsider
    Herbert West-Reanimator
    The Hound
    The Rats in the Walls
    The Festival
    He
    Cool Air
    The Call of Cthulhu
    The Colour Out of Space
    The Whisperer in Darkness
    The Shadow Over Innsmouth
    The Haunter of the Dark
    The book is 417 pages long.

    It’s time for some cosmic horror! Here I have the long anticipated ’The Call of Cthulhu…’!
    I added that creepy voice on the illustration soundtrack from the amazing podcast: ”H.P. Lovecraft Literary Podcast” and the ramble of the Mad-Arabs words, "That is not dead which can eternal lie, yet with strange aeons even death may die,” was done by Andrew Leman. Check out the podcast if you are interested in reading Lovecraft! :-)

    I've read Lovecraft in the LOA edition, after reading an essay about him by Houellebecq. The Folio edition is tempting, very tempting. Thanks for sharing Pontus.

    • @PontusPresents

    • @paulbuhagiar5745
      @paulbuhagiar5745 Před 7 lety +4

      Enough to conclude that they're existentially (religiously?) creepy :) LOAs are scholarly editions not meant to be aesthetically shiny. Folios are the art of the book and they are becoming more so in combining scholarly rigour, introductions by the best geeks around and illustrations to die(and pay) for.

  • @sargondp69

    Nice book. But I wonder if some important stories are missing. Buying the Necro or his complete works would be better for many (not sure about me). I suppose I would still get this at a sale price. Also, did they edit any of the stories (beyond fixing typos) or are the stories included all complete?

    Lovecraft is my favourite author, sharing the first place with David and Leigh Eddings. I have the "Commemorative Edition Necronomicon The Best Weird Tales of H.P.Lovecraft ". It has 36 stories. I had it with me during my Navy service, and I got a peculiar reputation due to it. XD

  • @Fierylunar
    @Fierylunar Před 7 lety +1

    Thanks for the video! Glad to hear you're happy with the book. That music was bloody terrifying and I'm glad to be watching it in the sunlight. Well done!
    What are your thoughts on the end papers of the LE Lovecraft?

    • @PontusPresents
      @PontusPresents  Před 7 lety

      I'm glad you found the music to be scary since I tried my best to capture the horror from the illustrations and the stories. :)
      And about the endpapers on the LE; I really like marbling and I like the design itself with the swirls and the colours, but it's maybe not the best fit for that specific edition since the binding plus page edges are all black... I don't know. I guess I'd have to see the book in person first. What do you think?

    • @Fierylunar
      @Fierylunar Před 7 lety +1

      I'm bewildered by the design choices on the LE. To me, it could've been perfect (would've been easy to make it perfect perhaps?) but what with the eco leather and the weird marbling not fitting the feel of the book it is off-putting to me.
      I'm still not too sure whether I want the normal edition or not. Lovecraft is not close to anything I normally read, but at least it looks good. I like the duo-tone on the cover, and luckily it looks a lot sturdier and more luxurious than it did on the FS site. I'll sleep on it for a bit. It also depends on the summer sale: if there's a lot I'm wanting to buy already, I'll wait for a bit (maybe later on it'll be on sale as well?). If there's not much in there, I'll get the Rubaiyat, Dune, Dr. No, War of the Worlds and maybe Cthulu normal edition. Or maybe go wild and get a third LE (Riddley Walker, Duke's Children (hand-bound), Faerie Queene or a second hand Rime of the Ancient Mariner would be awesome, though expensive).

    • @PontusPresents
      @PontusPresents  Před 7 lety

      It sure could have been much better in many ways... I'm at least pleased they decided to make a standard edition right away.

    • @shankarviswanathan9667
      @shankarviswanathan9667 Před 7 lety +2

      Personally, I think that the endpapers on the LE look much better in real life than in pictures. That said, the endpapers on the standard edition look pretty amazing in this video.

    love this book, I spent the extra on the Ltd edition, though tbh this is a lovely book too. The 'box' that houses that edition shimmers like the front of this one, so I'm not missing out on that eye candy thankfully. I have recently started to collect Centipede Press, what do you think of their books?

    • @PontusPresents
      @PontusPresents  Před 6 lety +2

      I'm glad you are enjoying your LE! :-) I have had my eye on Centipede Press for awhile but do not own any of their books (mainly because the shipping is VERY expensive from the US). BUT, and keep this a secret between us, I might get the upcoming signed limited edition of Murakami's 'Kafka On the Shore'... ;-)

    • @markjones-rc1nm
      @markjones-rc1nm Před 6 lety +1

      yes, the shipping is expensive..they have just released a signed two volume set of The City and the Stars with Against the Fall of Night, Arthur C Clarke, but the shipping is $75!! I had a sharp intake of breath, it meant it as too rich for my blood this month sadly, I've purchased 2 first editions already this month.

    Have you contacted folio about the imperfection on the top of the spine? Personally, I would ask for an replacenmet. Usually, they send you a new one as long as you send pictures of the damage. I have had some volumes damaged in the mail and they have always been replaced free of charge without me even having to send back the damaged books. I don't mean to tell you what to do just wanted to make you aware that you can probably get it replaced without mush hassle. Keep up the good work. I am going to order this along with American Gods when my exams are over.

    • @PontusPresents
      @PontusPresents  Před 7 lety

      I'm aware of the awesome costumer service of the Folio Society but I will not ask for a replacement, mainly since I didn't really noticed it until you pointed it out, haha (at least not the fact that it had minor damage on both the slipcase and the spine, likely someone dropped/bumped it before shipping since the package was in prime condition). I'm sure you will be satisfied with this edition and with American Gods though. Thanks for watching! :)

    • @pontusgustafsson2799
      @pontusgustafsson2799 Před 7 lety +1

      Sorry for making you aware of it then!
      It really is not that noticeable and I am somewhat of a perfectionist. I'm guessing that Folio is happy not all customers are as picky as me. I have read very little Lovecraft so I'm sure I'm in for a treat.

    • @PontusPresents
      @PontusPresents  Před 7 lety

      Pontus Presents I have several collections on my kindle, plus at least 2 collections of hard covers, including an old biography by Sprague De Camp from the early 90s.. the hard cover edition that comes to mind is a boxed version by Race Point publishing, slip case edition called The Complete Fiction of H. P. Lovecraft. I'm 50, so I've owned many paperback and hardcover editions over the years, most of which I gave away to spread the love of reading.

      Pontus Presents 2 more things, you're waaaay younger than I thought! How old are you? The reason I ask, your voice sounds older, but you look like a young guy! Second thing, have you read your fellow countryman Fran G Bengsston's The Long Ships? I loved it and if you have not, seek it out, great Viking story.

    To much wasted space at the bottom of each page. Doesn’t match the top spacing either. Looks like a mistake. I question that layout.

    • @Danthehorse
      @Danthehorse Před 5 lety

      I agree and some pages the spacing is not uniform either. Very surprising given the cost of this book.
