I had a friend who was gay and his friends who were also gay were very racist. I had to stop hanging out with them they used the N-word all the time. Of course, anyone can be racist.

Also, you're looking at it the wrong way. In the same manner to how a person who was abused/bullied becomes someone who abused/bullied others when they have power, it's precisely those who was discriminated against who are more likely to discriminate against others. The length of time I've been around and the types and quality of comedy I've been exposed to. Someone older than me might think guys like Eddie Murphy, George Carlin or Richard Pryor are funnier than Dave Chappelle.

NOW, someone with some similar concepts would be Bernie Mac, but he related to the Black Community, more then any group. With Dave, if you've watched Con Air, Half Baked and The Nutty Professor = You KNEW he was destined for greatness and people can like it....hate it, deny it = NOBODY will have the reach of Dave Chappelle (he's too universal)
Dave is spot on. His comedy is intelligent and you have to be able to think deeper about issues. People who are not able to see things other than in black and white are the ones who find him offensive and miss the points he's making.

Context. Context is important. Dave Chapelle is the best comedian ever imo. I thought all his specials were great and when he first used Da Baby's shooting in WalMart to make a point, I just thought damn, that is crazy.
Then I thought about it and added in context. Da Baby wasn't big at the time. Definitely not the hit "artist" he is now. This is relevant as fame can work against you. Being high profile and linked to something undesirable can get you dropped before the facts even come out. Even disregarding that he was never prosecuted. It wasn't a murder, or at least the judicial system ultimately didn't treat it as such. In his genre violence is glorified. Not something that fans are likely to cancel him for, in fact it's often the opposite.
The single biggest aspect of that comparison is the individual. 1 person shot 1 person. Aside from the details of that case, it wasn't 1 or 2 people that shot at a group of like minded people. It wasn't a Jewish guy shooting up a mosque or something. To kill is far more serious than it is to speak but only to a degree. Context matters. If you can rally people to the point of violence against an entire group it's far more likely to be a serious threat as opposed to 1 unhinged shooter waving a 9 in a mostly vacant bar.
Ofc that doesn't apply to Da Baby in the comparison. He wasn't trying to incite people to murder gays. He said some shit gay people wouldn't want to hear and he was punished for it. On face value the loss of life at WalMart would seem more serious because ultimately it is regardless of the circumstances but context does matter. If he murdered a grade school student in cold blood instead, that would drastically alter everything about the situation and the comparison. While I understand where he's coming from, Chapelle's analogy actually falls flat. Shit Ray Rice caught more heat than Da Baby for knocking out his girl, Adrian Peterson for hitting his kid with a switch, etc.

I love that (like George Carlin) his humor is _not_ about belittling individuals or groups. It's about shining a light on the double standards in _society_ (as a whole) that _allow_ certain individuals and/or groups to _get away_ with things that others can't. The revelation about what finally hurt Da Baby's career (and what _didn't)_ is a perfect and horrible example of the disproportionate distribution of privilege in society, even among marginalized minorities. His MLK bits made me laugh out loud, and his Stonewall reference made me literally say, "Hell, yes!!!"
P.S. Regarding his Mike Pence bit, has anyone noticed that Lindsay Graham is a 67-year-old man with great hair and a bit of lilt to his speech, who has never been married and has no kids?
