I am loving this Alaska series Taku!! The smoked fish looked delicious. What a cool smoker you made there. You always impress me with these catch and cooks Taku. No one does it like you! 🤙🤙🎣
Last time I was there during a rafting trip we stopped for lunch at a small glacier fed feeder stream… You could jump over the creek in the narrow places however the king salmon were running and they were as big as my leg in that little creek! Our most AWESOME state I do believe! Thanks for the flashback :-)
I appreciate the calmness and focus in your videos. I’m sure it’s not easy , traveling, filming, trying to enjoy life, as well as all the other hardships life has to offer.. people like you keep me inspired. Thank you
Yes, the much maligned pink salmon. In my many years of living in south central Alaska they were commonly referred to as “stinky pinkies,” but when caught in the ocean or just returning to spawn they had a pleasant mild flavor and sound flaky texture. On another unrelated pink salmon note consider visiting “Humpies” restaurant in downtown Anchorage…always a fun establishment to hang out in for pleasant seafood and brews.
No-see-ems are the scourge of the earth! They are no joke in Alaska. Listening to you talk about them and the mosquitos, it was like I was transported back there, years ago and I could feel them trying to eat me! Lol
Taku, I have lived in Alaska since the '70s but I have to say the way you prepared the Dollie and Pink was the coolest method ever. Nice fillet work too on fish you've done for the first time. If you use wet brine you need to let the fish dry and form a pellicle. I think you'll be more impressed by the taste of the actual sokeye and some of the other species.
I love how immersive all your content is thank you for allowing us to journey with you on all these exciting trips. Living vicariously through you Forsure. Sending love and appreciating to you and your family. Thank you for being a great part to my days this last year and a half I’ve followed you along. Shout out to fisherman’s life for reccomending me to you
Easy ID for pinks...long, oval spots on the tail. I caught my PB pink in 2021, in Washington state. It was 9lbs 2oz. I really enjoy them smoked and grilled. Reminder: If you lay those fillets skin-side down on a raised rack, and cover in rock salt, the meat will firm up quick (2 hours) and won't leave the meat salty. Works slick!
When you first called that humpy a sockeye I choked on my beer. Lol. Excitement gets us all. I let my first ever salmon, a spring salmon go cuz I thought all that was in the river was coho and couldn’t keep wild coho so I let it go.
@ 07:00 just like the movie "City Slickers", the food, "its brown, its hot and there's lots of it" I am sure enjoying your wonderful adventure, thanks for sharing!
Taku my husband is a fisherman he always goes for the 100+ tuna pounders and honestly it is also so amazing seeing you love fishing as much as we do!! great content keep it coming...
Whenever I see people fishing from shore I'm reminded of the video where a grizzly slowly walks out of the bushes, sits next to the fishermen for a few seconds and then walks right past him.
You definitely have the best knife skills of anyone I’ve seen on outdoor CZcams channels. Almost good enough to be a sushi chef! Oops I guess you were/are🙏
Pinks are great smoked. They are good bbq'ed too, IF you bleed, clean and ice them really fast then cook them right away without freezing them. Otherwise they get really slimy and the meat gets mushy (I used to call them stinky pinkies). They seem to have a high oil content and a very mild flavor, so they have a great texture when smoked even though they are not as flavorful as other salmon. Nice episode!
hey Taku, welcome to AK! that humpback you caught is a spawn pink salmon actually! i never kept them before always thought they are bad tasted, but good to watch you cooking them sooo good!
I'm an Alaskan virgin and thank you for taking us on your journey and showing us the ropes n safety guidelines just in case we are able to explore the Alaskan wilderness one day. From all the Alaska videos by experts that I have seen, they act like there are salmon swimming stack like anchovies in the water. This may be only true for migration location where they are spawning. Bear country I can not imagine. I thought it was like lake Tahoe where you only see bears at late night at camp or something. Freaking crazy I don't think I'll last long there if I were to wonder off the trail like you guys have. If not the bears, It'll be them skeeters. See ya on the next one n show us the city life too.
The Alaskans weren't lying about their mosquitoes. I can't think of many times I could actually see them on camera. Must be the size of houseflies. Jocelyn is smart for wearing netting.
If you're ever planning on another AK trip let me know and I can take you to a place where you can fish shoulder to shoulder with the grizzlies and haul in more sockeyes than you could ever imagine. Plus you'd love the name of the place.

Nice. Caught hundreds of Humpies while stationed in Alaska. Only way I will eat them is smoked. I ended up converting an old dishwasher into a smoker. Worked great.
Woah! I’ve never seen anyone keep a humpy that’s that far along in their river change. Good to know you enjoyed the taste of it! I’ll consider keeping those more this season. Keep up the amazing work y’all!
I enjoy watching u guys eat. I get to pretend that I’m eating and enjoying all the flavors and food too. Please eat longer and show the food longer. Thanks
Once the pink salmon get that hump, it’s not good to eat. They’re basically decomposing and dying. Might want to get a type of holster for the bear spray it’s not recommended to have a carabiner clipped on it because it needs to be a quick draw. I had one time where a bear popped out of nowhere and the carabiner was stuck. Thankfully the bear didn’t charge or anything. But I do recommend getting something more useful because those bears can cover ground fast.
Just a redundant tip, keep your bear spray accessible. Clipped in a carabiner might seem easy to get to until a bear charges you and you are fumbling to unclip it. Keep it in your sweater or jacket pocket or better yet in a holster.
I went camping this past weekend about 45 minutes from Lake Tahoe. All I saw was a dried up lake, smoke from the nearby forest fire, and powdery dirt that got everything dirty. I envy your view.

Often times people would think I was fishing game because I carried a large Motorola two way radio. I was in the US Coast Guard and on call so I had to carry a radio. I can’t tell you how many times I was given stink eye when I was fishing….

The dorsal hump on pink salmon is composed predominantly of connective tissue (collagen fibers). No cartilage or significant lipid or fat content.
So it's non edible?
@@itzyabui it's not worth it. They're dog food here.
@@itzyabui Collagen is a flavor enhancer, so maybe it could make nice fish broth. It also makes gelatin, so I think that could have some nice uses.
Cartilage and bone are also made of collagen, just a different kind of collagen.
