- Episode 3 of 4. We make it through three more portages on this episode and finally get some sunshine and another amazing campsite with a sunset!

Fantastic change of weather. Love a good fog in the morning, gives Nature a totally different feel.
It was certainly beautiful, just wish the sun would have come out sooner like the forcast called for!
Been down that river since I was 12 I’m 50 now ....I tether my paddle to the boat and I still bring a half paddle with me.... great video

Snake might be a Pit Viper common in that area.

BTW, we spent lots of time at Camp Au Sable because it was/is owned by the Michigan Conference of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. My father was first a SDA teacher/associate pastor, then a minister for 37 years. The outdoors were our mutual true love.

Fun video, but...It's Au Sable (like Cobble) and we use "paddles" to paddle kayaks. Oars are for rowboats. You gave yourself away as not a paddler.
Yeah, I know how to pronounce it, I was just saying it wrong in that video, i’ve said it correctly in many other videos. I never claimed to be a paddler. Oar/paddle it’s just a word. I’ve through paddled three rivers and hundreds of miles so I believe that makes me a paddler. Not trying to be rude, but if I had a nickel for every time I’ve been told that I’ve pronounced it wrong I would be doing very well lol. When you’re from Ohio and pronouncing it wrong for 30 years it takes a while to get it right!

@@jasonwish- Probably a hog hose snake, could have been an Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake. That's the only venomous snake we have up here, pretty uncommon though. The hog-nose flattens it's head to look like a viper.
There are no water moccasins in Michigan, so I’m betting you had a run in with an eastern hog-nose. They can be aggressive and their heads flatten out making them look like adders. They’re not venomous, but people often kill them believing they are. 😢 We saw them often on Au Sable River when I was a child.

Is there a lot of motorboat traffic on the ponds? If so, is it a safety concern or do they give you a wide berth?
I wouldn’t be worried about motorboat traffic but I was there in September and it was very quiet. July and August would probably be a little busier.

Northern water snake non venomous but are a bit aggressive

reserved ahead of time on line, and we didn't do it correctly but it worked out since it was the off season and mid week.

Close it was site 60. One of my favorites is 41 on the island near Lumbermans Monument sand dune.

As an ultra-light guy I'm sure everything on Jason's kayak has a purpose I just can't figure out the purpose of the ear of corn

As an avid paddler, I see you making two dangerous mistakes.
First, no emergency paddle. Now you know why I always carry one. Really! Losing your paddle with dozens of miles to go! What would you do if you lost it, or damaged it?
Splitting and sharing your paddle? So, you drop it and it sinks. Back to square one.
The second error is unforgivable; paddling without wearing your PFD. People drown in seconds. You end up in the water because of an accident. Imagine if you hit your head on the concrete at that portage! You probably would have died, even with then colonel there.
I live on Lake Huron and almost every year someone frowns near my home. We saw two people drown from our back yard. It happens so fast.
Please be more careful.
It’s a very lazy safe river and there’s no way I would wear a life jacket on that river but that’s just me. There is definitely a time and place for PFD’s. A spare paddle would’ve definitely been wise. And there were several areas to exit the river before going into Huron right at the very end.

Hey Colonel! My uncle Matt went ocean fishing this summer. He got about two miles offshore on his way to an island when his paddle blade just fell off the shaft! Of course he did not bring a spare that day. We had a good laugh. You definitely need the spare Paddle from time to time!
@@RiverKingsKayak definitely gonna start packing one! Especially if Jason was to loose his. I bet I could sell him my spare for 3 to 5 times what I paid for it😂
I love your videos, Just fyi, it is against the law to Harass wildlife in Michigan. Film them, but don't make a game out of chasing them.
You guys screw with our wildlife too much. Purposely disturbing wildlife is illegal don't you know. You also have no problem trespassing on other people's property. Both are huge no no's on that river.
Other than that it was pretty entertaining and we'll shot. More recording of the river in front of you and less of your mug would've made it better.
There is no good reason to harass ducks, swans, snakes or any other wildlife. Grow up!
How was I harassing ducks swans and other wildlife?! And if I feel like harassing a snake I will!
