- What is Guinness? This video will be interesting even if you’re Irish as I’m certain you’ll find out some interesting facts about our iconic national drink.
A lot of work goes into these videos. You can now buy me a pint as a means of appreciation for my work on Naked Ireland, no obligation, obviously - only if you can afford it... I appreciate it. Cheers.

In this video you'll see a couple of pints being pulled and appreciate the process getting it in the glass - which some would claim as an art form in itself.
The Guinness people claim that it takes 119.53 seconds to pour a pint. This includes a resting period for the drink before it’s topped up. The creamy white head is produced through this resting period (and is the chemistry part) - as Guinness is unusually low in carbon dioxide, so the more prevalent nitrogen bubbles rise to the top during the 'rest' and form the head.
It gets its black colour from the roasting of the malted barley - this is similar to how coffee beans are prepared, in fact people will tell you it has a coffee flavour. This heating process cooks the sugars and the grains together resulting in the thick velvety colour.
By 1858 Guinness was being exported as far as New Zealand. The drink is now consumed in 150 countries, with the African continent consuming 40% of what’s produced worldwide. The largest market for Guinness is in Britain however (obviously trumping Ireland because of its larger population), but what is more surprising is that rather than Ireland coming second, it is Nigeria who are the second largest consumers.
While it’s on the bar settling - if you’ve paid for it you can take it away but it needs to settle before it's ready to drink.
The Marketing phrases “Guinness is Good for you” and “My Goodness, My Guinness” were coined in 1929. Indeed Guinness is renouned for being high in Iron and for that reason is often used medicinally (or that’s our excuse for drinking many pints of it in an evening). But obviously today those kinds of slogans can’t be used, Despite that, research has shown that it can prevent heart clots.
A pint of Guinness contains 200 calories which is much less that most other beers. Now that’s something to smile about.

I just drank my first Guinness. It really does remind me of a dark roast coffee.
It has a roasted flavour. Did you have it in Ireland?
@@nakedireland had it in a pub in argentina maybe one day I'll have the privilege.
p.s. if you like the comment the poster will get notified
Hi Gustavo, last month I had a beer in Buenos Aires airport (stopping off between Chile and Amsterdam, en route to Ireland. I didn’t leave the airport as I was catching another flight, but at least I can say I was in Argentina, even if I didn’t actually dance a tango!
@@nakedireland I'm actually Brazilian 😁 hope you had a nice few hours
I once had the opportunity to go to Sao Paulo and sadly I didn’t take it - it’s a big regret. I wanted to take a bus to Rio. It’s a place I’ve gotta see. I’m a fan of Brazilian music and the composer Antonio Carlos Jobim.
Palace Bar, Fleet Street, Dublin. Lovely pints. Great pub.
True, it’s a lovely bar, a bit mad at the weekends!
Guinness is an amazingly Irish drink that you either will love or will end up loving after a few. It is by far the best beer I have ever had, an amazing Irish treat indeed.
Cheers for your comment Undertaker, and thanks for watching.
As a Mexican-American (shoutout the St. Patrick Battalion) I love Guinness. Legit my top 3 beers to have. I can't wait to visit Ireland and have a proper pint of Guinness!
Danny, your pint of Guinness is waiting on you here! Hurry up.
You hit it out the park.
That’s the aim Jonathan. Thanks for watching. I hope you’ll watch more Naked Ireland stuff.
It's so dam good I can't get enough of it
That’s the problem AyyitsJB! But a little of what you fancy does you good as we say. Thanks for watching and I hope you’ll check out some of my other videos.
Same here, it’s the only beer I buy.
I got to experience my first Guinness in Dublin. I tried many pubs over there but bowes pub by far had the best pint. Unfortunately the pints over here in the U.S aren’t even close to as good as they all were over there
Hopefully you’ll get another trip over soon - and a few pints of the black stuff.
A few years ago I tried Guinness straight out of the can (without pouring it) and I found it awful.
However, I didn't know you had to pour it and let it rest for a bit. When I tried that, I discovered what might be one of my favourite beers.
It's genuinely awesome! I really love every part of it, from the color, foam, taste and mouthfeel. I can only be sorry for not knowing how to actually pour it before
If you’re not Irish you can probably be excused for not knowing that. If you’re Irish, you should probably hand your passport back at the nearest post office! It’s the most wonderful drink - welcome on board.
@@nakedirelandYep, I'm from France! It's not a beer we commonly drink, so there's not a lot of knowledge on it there
Je passe beaucoup de temps en Corrèze et il y a un café non loin de chez moi qui propose de la Guinness à la pression. Je ne l'ai pas encore essayé, mais je vais le faire.
There’s a story about a pub in Dublin, where you go in about a minute past midday - hungover probably - and order a pint of Guinness. The barman says, ‘Do you want a quick one, or a slow one?’ Of course you ask for a slow one. He says, ‘Do you want a quick one while you’re waiting?’ Answer obviously, is ‘yeah, alright’.
😮
I love it ❤
Who doesn’t! Thanks for watching.
Going to try my first Guinness today! also shocking that Nigeria, of all places, is second in consumption of Guinness??? how did they become such consumers of it?!?!
Oh wow, I hope you enjoy it. I strangely feel a sense of responsibility! I’ve enjoyed it all my life, though I think some people find the taste a bit strange at the start. Perhaps you’ll be like me and take to it. Yes, it’s popular throughout many African countries - the big new market for Guinness now is China! It’s all about cleaver marketing and advertising.
@@nakedireland I do not know what I feel towards it 😅 I do not enjoy the taste of any beer due to the hops but this one confuses me as it does change the flavour profile compared to most others, though I still can't get away from the base hops flavour, unfortunately.
Well, it’s certainly not for everyone Lovathon, but at least you’ve experienced it. Despite the fact that we all know about the damaging effects alcohol can have, they do say it has (Guinness)some medicinal qualities (iron). And it’s lower in calories believe it or not, compared with other beers. But for me, it’s just a great great drink. I’m not in the business of promoting it for the company - I think they do that well enough themselves!!
When I met my hubby he drank Guinness and always says his best pint was always in The Sawyer's Arms Manchester.
My Dad used to tell me how the Guinness served in one of the Pubs in the Short Strand was scooped up in a jug from a bath in the back!
A controversial drink a Black& Tan with Guinness.
When I had my eldest child back in the 70's the Midwife advised me to drink a bottle of guiness a day! for iron! lol
it always looks nice but not my favourite tipple!
It’s an iconic drink. I must say I love it.
A good brew canna be seen the through.
Long Island NY has a hand full of Irish pubs with Guinness close to the taste from Ireland. I love me some Guinness I love it so much I even have it out of the can!
I’ve been to Long Island, but I didn’t dare order a Guinness there, though if you say there’s some good places, I believe you. A good Guinness pub needs to be a pub that sells a lot of it, meaning that the pumps are constantly in use. Next time I’m in Long Island, I’ll seek out an Irish bar. The new canned Guinness is quite good actually.
@@nakedireland I absolutely agree, Im Irish American and Iv been to pubs in dublin like grave diggers. theres a pub in suffolk county long island called Flannigan's 4 taps of the black stuff constantly going. slainte!
Some day I’ll visit Flannigan’s and I’ll make a film about it. Might take a while! Thanks for watching.

It’s the go to beer in my American house.
It's the go to beer in my Irish house John!! In fact, I've just this minute gone to one! Thanks for watching.
Piano had me waiting for someone to drop off dead.
Oh dear. Thanks for watching anyway.
Thank you. I am going to try my first Guinness.
Good health Samuel. Let me know how it goes.
@Naked Ireland I grew up in Texas, but I never liked the taste of beer. For me most American beers were bad tasting water. Guinness has a strong taste and flavor. I will never drink a regular beer again.
Samuel, I’m so glad you enjoyed your Guinness. Perhaps it’s ‘your drink’ from this point onwards.
I love Harp Lager had a few the other year in Belfast took me back to my student days! it was heavenly!
It’s not a drink I like, but it obviously has nostalgia for you.
It’s weirdly popular in Canada.
That’s Bizarre!
You’ll find it on tap in a lot of bars in Toronto and Montréal. Think marketing has a lot to do with it.
Kilkenny is similar in many European countries.
Kilkenny, I can’t understand. It’s not a bad pint. Haven’t seen it in Belfast for years.
Cannot beat a cracking pint of Guinness…the cure for everything.
Obviously drink responsibly, but yeah! ; )
Beautiful, the perfect pint!
I enjoyed it very much Pontus!
Guinness is ruby red
It is? Looks black to me Gary.
Hold the glass up to the sun and look through the glass
Now I’ll have to wait for the sun!
I won’t have guiness unless in ireland except I’ve never been to Ireland
Maybe you should visit Ireland and have that Guinness?
Hopefully you enjoy a nice Guinness Josh?
I pray there is an alcohol-free version then we can drink without guilt! Great stuff tho I save it for Irish-American History Month now. Thanks for the video.
Hi Yvonne, there absolutely is an alcohol free version. Haven't tasted it myself, but I'm reliably informed that it's pretty amazing by zero alcohol standards! So you'll enjoy that. Thanks for watching and supporting.
There is an non alcoholic one. But in the states it is considered an alcoholic drink.
What?? How can that be? I mean, if there’s no alcohol in it? I’d love to know the reason for that.
@@nakedirelandTell you what I tasted the non alcoholic pint the other day and was completely taken aback. It was actually extremely well, of course you can tell it’s lacking in some of the taste, but otherwise it’s become my favourite non alcoholic drink easy!
Yes I’m told it’s amazing.
♥️♥️♥️♥️💯
You obviously like Guinness Paula?
@@nakedireland Yes 👌🏽💯
Deym, im from the island boy of the philippines and i need to try this alcoholic coffee
You’ll love it.
it's a fizzy coffee
It has coffee flavours, but I wouldn’t describe it as fizzy.

Have you covered cold vs. room temperature Guinness?
No I haven't though that's a good idea. Many thanks.
Bruh i just drink Guinness with my friend, I'm not irish I'm south east asian and i tell my friend that it's taste like a coffe lol
Yes, many people do think it has a coffee flavour. Thanks for watching and I hope you’ll watch some more Naked Ireland videos.
I've drank so much Guinness perhaps my blood has turned black. It's lovely.
Guinness is good for you - I’m sure I read that somewhere?
What are you onabout??
Ummmm. Guinness. I drink it by the bucket loads. I drink gallons of the stuff. It's just a shame the quality of the Guinness and how it's poured varies so much!
Yes, I don’t know where you’re commenting from (US perhaps? UK?) but outside Ireland I think it can be tricky to get a good pint.
@@nakedireland SW UK. It really is hit and miss unfortunately.
You’ll have to move to Ireland!
I prefer Murphy's
Really? I haven’t had a pint of Murphys for years! I can’t remember what it tastes like. You can’t get it up here in the north.
@@nakedireland Yeah, it's disappeared here in England all of a sudden too, and impossible to find. It has a richer, dark chocolate/coffee taste. Nothing wrong with good old Guinness though!
I’d certainly give it a go if I could find it. I think you can still get it in Cork? It might even be brewed there?
So Guineas is pretty much English then
Eh..no it’s brewed in Ireland at St James’ Gate Dublin. Where did you hear it was English??
@@nakedireland well the English drink more than anyone else so I guess it’s there’s
The UK (not the English) are the largest consumers of Guinness, but that of course will include N. Ireland as well as Scotland and Wales. So England isn't the largest consumer. But, even if it were, I think we'd still have to conclude that the drink is Irish. but I can understand why another country may want to claim it as their own. It's quite a drink!
Beer is so beautiful, unfortunately ppl bastardize it.
Perhaps.

Draft Guinness is Piss tastes like tap water and is over hyped and overpriced
It’s obviously a drink you’ve never tasted john, but thanks for watching just the same.
What does it taste like?
It's terrible.
Awww c’mon.
Ahh the overated beer that is creamy with no beer flavor at all lol want a real beer try Belhaven scottish ale that's flavor
Thanks God, I’ll stick with my stout.
@nakedireland I just wanted to apologize I had an extra stout last night and it was life changing Guinness is better with carbonation lol
Glad you enjoyed it. And thanks for watching.
Just can't get myself to like it. Its a beautiful looking pint but the taste is disgusting.
I wouldn’t worry about it Leo, it’s not for everyone. Thanks for watching anyway and I hope you’ll check out some more Naked Ireland videos.
