- Craftsman rolling tool chest or box restoration. I've been in the process of slowing converting a room upstairs from my shop into a "clean tool room". this is where I will show off my restorations and collection. This tool chest will go underneath my new workbench and will house some of my Craftsman socket and wrench collection. I found it at an Estate Sale back in 2022. I remember it being full of tools! I pushed it off into the corner of my shop and it sat there for the better part of a year. I was hoping to just give it a really god cleaning then polish and was the paint. But, the condition was beyond that so I ended up repainting the entire chest. Pretty happy with the outcome.

Looks much better with those black drawers. Black and red always go well together
Thanks Ken!
How satisfying to watch. Great job.
Thank you, glad you enjoyed the video.
I disagree with you not painting the inside back but other than that you done a first class job . Thanks for sharing it . David
I appreciate your comment and you are probably right, I should have painted it as well. It does have a really good coat of the Rust-Fix on it which will 100% protect it from rusting. Thanks for always tuning in.
My dad was an auto mechanic. He died in 1981. This box reminds me of him. Thanks for the memories. Great job, too.
✌🏽🙏🏽
I'm glad it sparked some good memories for you. I'm featuring my Dad's old tool box in a coming video. He didn't have much in the way of tools, but cool that I have this. Thanks for watching.
AWESOME!
Thanks!
Great job sir!! I've got some tools that would look great in that box!!!
LOL. Thank you! I have a ton of tools that go in there, just have to find the time to clean them up!
357Magdad sent me..great job, I really enjoyed this!
He's awesome and thanks for the views and sub. Hope you will enjoy my content.
Very nice! I have a similar Craftsman box thats tired! I think ill do mine one of these years!!
It's a little bit of work, but satisfying at the same time. Thanks for watching!
I have older Craftsman boxes that I have covered in a video where you can see the slides are made differently, with a spring release that is much easier to disengage to remove the drawers and slides. Recently at work I looked closely at several Kennedy Tool boxes in our machine shop and they have what looks like exactly the same slides as my older Craftsman boxes, so it appears that Kennedy was making the Craftsman boxes at some point in the past!
Cool! I'm working on top section box currently, video will be out in a few months, that has those same spring retentions. Way better!
Nice job on the restoration. I'm happy 357magdad recommended your channel. Subscribed and rang the bell.
Thanks, glad you came along on the journey!

That's awesome! It looks like it's sales floor ready! Nice trick with the hacksaw blade. You really do great work David.
Thank ya brother. Learned that hacksaw blade trick right here on CZcams. Takes a bit to get it working right.
Magdad sent me‼️
I'm glad you stopped by and I hope you will enjoy the content!
I've been looking for these old boxes nearly every day.
This past year I picked up four of them. I'm still looking for another 1980's box to match one I have. tHanks for a great video!
Thank you! I have a fixed bench model I've had for 25+ years and use it everyday as well.
It looks magnificent, dare I say "Regal"? 😂😂😂. But VINTAGE??? Come on now, we are all older than 1980 and we're not vintage, are we? Hmm maybe we are. I don't know, but no matter how old I get, I doubt I will ever think of something from the 80's as "vintage". Thanks for a great video! 👍😀😎
I realized a few months ago that I am vintage! I'm really getting into 80's stuff and bringing back so many memories, so that's why I consider it vintage. LOL. Found and subbed to your channel today and will be looking back over your videos soon. Thanks, David
David it turned out wonderful. Great job sir. I really enjoyed the video.
Thank you Tammy!
I added the Craftsman Pads, when I got mine. The top also has a pad.
I bet that looks nice! Thanks for tuning in.
Think the paint is latex paint, which comes off easily with ipa alcohol, and the degreaser was acting with possibly overspray from brake cleaner. I have one too, now in Ireland via England. Purchased by an accountant in Alabama, then shipped to UK in 1995, when he and family moved back. Dry ptfe spray is the best for the slides and it wont stain clothes and stays in place longer than oil or grease
Wow, that box has traveled! Great story and suggestion on the lube. Thanks for watching!
I wonder if Waterloo made it in January of 86' Great job!!!!
Very nice. I really need to find time to do the tool box I was given. Thank you for the video and instructions.
Thanks Ryan. They can be a pain, but it's like getting a new one!
Awesome work David. A very thorough Job. It looks great.
Thanks Dale, really appreciate you tuning in!
Turned out nice, it really looks good.
Thanks Jeff, appreciate you watching.
Great Job! Your a Toolbox master Mr. David! Very nice!
Thanks Vic, have plenty more to do……someday. 🤣
Looks beautiful David. I have that exact same tool chest with the matching toolbox that sits on top. I have used it almost every day for many years and it still looks new. Well done! Bill.
Thanks Bill, if you take care of them, they are a lifetime purchase!
As good as new... well done 👍
Thank you so much 😀
4.0 outstanding!
Awesome comment thank you so much
Looks great!
Thanks Magdad!
Strongly suggest you cleacoat it soon to protect the paint
Thanks for the great suggestion and for watching!
Its good to get tools and storage that need a little work if you can get it at a reduced rate. Nice job on this cabinet. I was noticing your yellow vacuum would you mind saying what make and model, would you recommend it? Thanks
Thanks for watching! I love that vacuum, it's a Karcher WD-4. I use it everyday and been dragging it around for at least 5 years. Highly recommend!
Great job, looks great! What color black did you use on the drawers?
Appreciate it! I believe it was Rustoleum 2X in satin black.
Does the spray paint hold up to scratches being a tool box I wouldn’t think it would hold up very well but every video I have seen on toolbox restoration they used spray paint
Well, it does hold up pretty good. I always let mine dry for a few days and then 2-4 coats of clear on top. Once it sets for awhile it does become a durable finish. The cure time is key, it will get hard. Of course it isn't going to stand up the rigors of daily use on a tool box. Mine are being used to store and display my tool collection. I have painted many other items (like my daily use vise) around my shop with rattle cans that get used on a regular basis and it holds up okay. I don't have powder coating or some sort of industrial paint with a spray system. Most people don't and that's why you see so many painting with rattle cans. Good paint inside, not the best delivery system. Hope this helps and thanks for watching.
So unless this is older footage, you must live south of the mason dixon line. What state are you in?
Yes to both, I filmed this last year and I live in NC. I had some hand surgery back in Dec that was putting me out of the shop for 3-4 months, but was able to return a little sooner than expected. Just can't do as much as not for extended times. So, I've been using some older footage until I can catch up.
Funny thing about alcohol taking paint right off. It takes my GF's clothes right off too
Oh my! You're hilarious. Thank you Brother Ken.
So it looks like these craftsman boxes were painted with water colors??? 😬😬😬
No latex, not alcohol resistant
