  • The Voron clones are multiplying.... and, shrinking? The Troodon Mini is here! In this video we take a closer look at the new Troodon Mini Pro, as well as the upgraded Troodon 2.0 Pro. I discuss what makes these printers special, how they compare to a true Voron, and what sets them apart from the competition.

    I just got the troodon 2.0 last week and have been loving it .the place i ordered from gave a phaetus uhf hotend from 3d printers bay, it seems the people that own formbot are selling some through them with upgrades available. I hope I didn't buy the new hotend in vein tho, as it was an option for upgrading on their site. It ships separately from the machine, and has to be installed. I have a message into them asking them for instructions on how to install it if the toolhead board doesn't support the rated power, hopefully I will hear back tomorrow from them.

    After watching your videos, I acquired a Troodon almost a year ago. By the way, thanks for the work, which motivated me to take on this project. Since then, it's been converted to a Klipper / StealthBurner, as well as a Dragon UHF hotend. Unfortunately, the flow rates were way below my expectations.
    However, did you notice that the PT1000 thermistor is off by more than 30°C at 200°C (< 170°C), when connected to the Octopus X7 (or the analog input of an SB2209/ SB2240)?
    I also had similar flow rates, for example a Polymaker Polyterra at 13 mm³/s. After connecting the PT1000 to a MAX31865, and removing the reverse bowden (cause of high friction and ESD), this filament went up to 56 mm³/s!

    • @ygk3d
      @ygk3d  Před 2 měsíci

      Thanks for watching. I haven’t noticed that temperature differential but never did any explicit testing. The flow rate is definitely low with the stock hotend.

      I own Prusa systems, Bambu X1C printers, an older Troodon 2.0 from last year, and a self-built Voron 2.4r2 350. The Troodon is quieter than the Bambus and the Voron (I should have picked quieter fans for my Voron), but louder than the Prusa printers.

  • @IanDouglas
    @IanDouglas Před 3 měsíci +1

    I didn't even notice the full Troodon 2.0 was now a "Pro" model when I ordered last week. Any idea when they might release the "Pro" upgrade kit for the Troodon 2.0 from last year? (I've asked Formbot as well but it can take them some time to reply to emails). BTW, if you don't install the acrylic on the top of the Troodon, you can reclaim some of the lost Z height that the StealthBurner takes away because of its added height.

    You have a pallette 3 pro? I have one on my MK3S+ and I can not for the life of me get the color timing to stay timed. It's always running the wrong colors usually about halfway into the print. I pretty much have all the bugs worked out of my unit, except for the timing. I just can't get it to work. Plus it seems like Mosaic has just given up supporting the darn thing. Haven't seen a new firmware update in a year and a half.

  • @dorlock42
    @dorlock42 Před 3 měsíci +2

    The Teamgloomy site states that the Troodon V2 internals in the print head are designed for a maximum of 2.5A (which equates to 60 watts at 24v). Formbot sells a Stealthburner Extruder for Troodon 2.0 with a choice of Dragon High Flow hotends, so I'm thinking that in its default state the Troodon could handle some 60W HF hotends. If my reasoning is correct. Anyway, I like the fact that Formbot is trying to improve Troodon. Changing the bearings in the extruder. Switching to a Klipper, or TAP RC8 already in the stock equipment.
    I already have an order in, and that's mostly thanks to you. Thanks so much for what you do =)

    • @ygk3d
      @ygk3d  Před 3 měsíci +1

      I think it could handle 60W in theory, but without a safety factor. A Formbot engineer at one point advised no more than 50. Thanks for watching and commenting, much appreciated.

    I feel like this falls into a really niche category of people that don't want a "ready to print" machine like Bambu or Creality, but also don't have the time/money/skill to make a Voron. I appreciate the effort & the content, but the hardware is a half-measured solution of all fronts.

    • @JonLaRue
      @JonLaRue Před 3 měsíci +3

      It’s the time aspect for me. I don’t have 30 or 40 hours for a Voron build. At best I have 3 hours. This is feasible, but I am awaiting to see what the Bambu XL has in store for us.

    • @ygk3d
      @ygk3d  Před 3 měsíci +10

      In a lot of ways it’s the best of both worlds. You get the open source, moddable nature of the Voron, with the quicker setup process of a Bambu/Creality (albeit 3 hours versus 30 minutes). It also happens to be cheaper than both, so there’s that too. The target market for this is bigger than you might expect.

      I feel like it's more of a printer for people who have grown past stuff like Enders and Ender clones, people where they want to be able to upgrade and fix their machine on their own but also don't want to go around sourcing $1k worth of parts and assembling them all from scratch. It's like saying there's no market for a prebuilt gaming PC running Windows when you could just buy a Macintosh.

    The idea of a mostly pre-assembled Voron seems incredibly appealing for a newbie to the platform like myself, but I really wish a normal Octopus v1.1 plus accompanying breakout boards and wiring were an option for the Troodon. It seems like you'd be significantly limited in terms of future upgrade/mod potential without changing almost all the electronics out - at which point I'm considering just forking over the ~$200 extra to get a 250mm Voron 2.4 kit from Formbot instead. I'd have bought the Mini in a heartbeat otherwise.

    • @mashiori9020
      @mashiori9020 Před 2 měsíci

      But as a newbie wouldn't a modded troodon be a decent choice? You could easily get an m8p+CB1 with stepper motors and a new toolhead board for less than 100 later on if you do wish to add things. Changing out the board and wiring prob wouldn't take long as the cable chains can open and there's many config for voron 2.4 and manta m8ps, Ans this whole time you don't really have to worry about the build of the printer itself which can easily take over 40 hours without taking into account tuning the thing
