  • The standards for African beauty have evolved over time, demanding money and hefty investment from black women by making us feel inadequate and flawed in design. Maureen Murunga shares how she participated in these 'truths' and even made a business out of them, until she became a mother and had to re-examine what she was going pass down to her girls.
Maureen Murunga has been fascinated by hair and beauty since she was a little girl. She owns and runs a string of salons in Nairobi and has recently fallen in love with her natural hair. She takes us on that journey.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

perhaps it's us that need to present to the world how we want to be seen the way we want and surely the choice won't be theirs anymore to affect our feelings

This video is the truth!...i'm 17 in my family and this stops with me!...I will start saying to them "if I have to alter my hair, the hair God gave me to fit your idea of beauty then i'll pass"..because they always tell me " what will you do with that hair?"
" Your hair is soo badd, let me put chemicals in it"
They better start liking it caz it's not going anywhere!...I'll prove to them it's okay to where your hair natural and it's good hair!...who cares about their opinions!!

You don't have to alter your hair, just have a style that fits your job depending on what the job is. You don't see other women wearing their hair in causal styles in professional settings.
