HOGAN'S HEROES 💥 THEN AND NOW 2021

  • Set in a German prisoner-of-war camp during World War II, how could Hogan’s Heroe’s not be one of the most interesting sitcoms of all-time? A take-off on Billy Wilder's Stalag 17 in 1953, but with more humor and less drama. And with a strong 6 seasons from 1965 to ‘71, Hogan’s Heroes won two Emmy awards out of an impressive 11 nominations. It was an unlikely comedic triumph, as we watched Hogan and his fellow so-called-prisoners, do their best war efforts from inside, always assisted by the incompetence of the German camp leaders. It was full of great gags, countless tunnels dug, and really fine acting from the lot.
I’m Nostalgic Nick for DoYouRemember, and today we’re heading back to Stalag 13 and seeing what the cast of Hogan’s Heroes got into after the war ended. If you enjoy this video, please be sure to give it a thumbs up, and don’t forget to subscribe and click the bell for notifications. Alright, privates, let’s move out!

The fact that Otto Klemperer wasn’t just glossed over, and even his image appeared, is a credit to your narrative’s integrity. I know it’s not terribly popular to talk about orchestral conductors in the context of popular television shows, but Otto Klemperer remains so iconic to every orchestral music lover, he is still more popular within this world today, than his wonderfully talented son is.

@@csnide6702 Apparently it was a challenge for him but he developed close friendships with other Jewish actors John Banner (Schultz) and Leon Askin (Burkhalter) and once quipped 'Who could play Nazis (and embarrass them) better than Jews? We saw everything.'
Banner, it is worth noting, publicly defended his character saying that Schultz was the embodiment of those Germans who never embraced the Nazis and resisted their evil, instead remaining good and helping the Resistance, Jews, and the Allies whenever possible. In a show of support for Robert Clary, Banner also wore long sleeve shirts throughout the series as he had also lost his entire family to the Holocaust and Leon Askin lost his parents after he was sent to America.

It was one of the best jokes played anyone who hated Jews, yet they, the haters, liked the show not knowing of the Jews in the cast. To me that was wonderful. I watched Hogans's Heroes as a kid. I have to say John Banner and Werner Klemperer made me laugh the most. I even still remember one of John Banner's lines. I'm not sure how the question went, but he was asked to look down at something specific, and say what he saw. His response was "I can't even see the floor". To this day, I remember roaring at the line....And I was a kid!!! 🤣

In 1965,when "Hogan's Heroes" went on the air, I was 19 & in the military!
Since it was only 20 years after WWII, I predicted that a show depicting American
soldiers essentially having a 'good time' in a German prison camp with inept Germans
guarding them, would 'bomb'! I thought that any living ex-POW's would collectively
protest the show! However, I was wrong & the show turned out to be a big hit! Go figure!

At 62 years old, I have been watching this great show since I was 8 years old or thereabouts. I thought John Banner was the greatest actor on this show. I like the fact that the early shows were and still are, in black and white.

Isn't it soooo sad that there's not a good variety of comedy sitcoms that will make everyone laugh?
Was born in 1951 and watching tv shows evolve thru the 50's, 60's and 70's was truly awesome.
Nowadays all there's to choose from is: "CRAP!"
I SOOOOO MISS THE GOOD'OL GLORY DAYS..........

A few inaccuracies. 1. Crane never married Cynthia lynn, he had an affair with her while she was married. He married Sigrid Valdis in real life, she's buried next him. 2 You showed Leon Askin when you talked about Klemperer dying. 3 Crane was murdered by his buddy Carpenter, they found Crane's brain matter on the rental car passenger side door panel that Carpenter had rented but it was too late to admit as evidence since he was acquitted, other than that, you did a decent job.
