  • Finally, here's a live recording of Betty Buckley as Grizabella in Cats. I'm so sorry about the audio; I tried my best to tweak and fix it but there we go. I know it isn't the best in terms of sound quality and it does not do her justice at all, but this is the only known bootleg of Betty in the original Broadway run. I'm more than lucky enough to get my hands on it lol.

Wow ! I was so lucky to see this in late Fall of 1982 at the WinterGarden. Her voice just seemed to ring through the air and rattle the rafters. Although she has many great recordings, they don't do justice to the tremendous resonance , strength and beauty of her voice. The best voice I've heard live on the stage. Many thanks for sharing this great piece.

There won't be any other Grizabella as great as Mrs. Buckley. Her voice and her imput in the character have no match so far.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!!!!!!! Yea, bootlegs!!!
I saw Cats twice at Winter Garden; can't complain cause I saw Laurie Beechman, but in my heart I really wanted to see Betty. This is magical even w/o visuals! I melt when I hear her sing "Touch me..."

Doesn't everybody. Those ringing high notes on "Touch Me" just go straight thru you. An indescribeable experience to hear her on stage.

Why is it that not a single actor-singer can achieve a such climax as Betty reaches? Has anyone got any footage of the rehearsals of this production?

I wonder why there has not been another Grizabella like Betty's; I mean, with the imput of invincible cat, refusing to be pitied. I love Laurie and of course Miss Page, but I think the closest one is Stephanie Block.

How stunning does she sound here!?!?!?!?! How on earth did you come across this??? :)

Stunning indeed! I was lucky enough to see her in Cats as well as 'Edwin Drood'. On stage, her extremely resonant and powerful voice just knocks you out of your seat. I've never heard any voice (live)on stage that is as stunning and thrilling as Miss Buckley's. Goose bumps every time I saw her on Broadway.

You said it Valerie. It sends both a thrill and a chill to hear that voice in person.

PS: you didn't happen to sneak a reel-to-reel recorder into "1776" in 1969 to catch her singing "He Plays the Violin" by chance? ...just kidding :)

Holy Smokes!!! I have been hoping to find a live recording from Cats for ever and ever. Do you have the whole show? (And if so, any chance you could post Grizabella the Glamour Cat?) Thanks so much for posting this!
