Break the Science Barrier is a TV documentary that I presented on Channel 4 in 1996. It argues for the importance, for society, of scientific ways of thinking. In it, I interviewed David Attenborough, Alec Jeffreys, who discovered DNA fingerprinting, and Douglas Adams, who gave a wonderful impromptu eulogy for science. I also interviewed a man who was wrongly convicted of murder because none of the lawyers, on either side, knew anything about science. The program ends on a more positive note - what I later came to call Science in the Soul.

@@fishbones23 yes bots everywhere now, you have to watch everything you do online 😒
The amount of advertising in this clip is exhausting. I'm all for monetizing good content and Richard Dawkins is always worth listening to, but the media team/person here just seems greedy or inexperienced and i'm unfortunately done watching -_-
HOWL!! Dawkins ceaselessly crows he has an inviable repudiation
of theism: "infinite regress". 'Gods MUST have a creator due to infinite regress'.
YOU FN COULD NOT MAKE THIS FOOL UP...HE COULDN'T BE INVENTED!!
"Infinite regress" IS THE 1ST LAW OF THERMODYNAMICS. There is no question
whatsoever Dawkins does not know the etiology of his God-killer: 'perhaps
Aristotle, Aeschylus, Hippocrates, Hippocampus'....he's literally that fn ignorant.
1st Law: "heat NEVER derives from cold....EVER...FN EVER"
ERFNGO: there can be only regresses in this universe. BUT..in the first
chapter of "The God Delusion" he stipulates that he refers ONLY to supernatural
gods. Thermodynamics is THE MOST proven of all human knowledge...Einstein said "it will NEVER be overthrown". IT'S NATURAL LAW...IT DOESN'T APPLY TO
THE "SUPERNATURAL"...YOU IGNORANT PHUKKKKS!!
That was 1996, scary to think how the situation has gotten even worse since then.
Now every one of them think Trump is jesus
Richard Dawkins is truly the most beautifully poetic man of science since Carl Sagan.
Richard Dawkins changed my life for the best. Coming from a family who is scientifically illiterate, Richard Dawkins, as did Carl Sagan, put science in a different perspective. I will be forever grateful for his contribution to humanity.
illiterate*
Yes Richard Dawkins is great.
Kudos to the truck driver that was falsely convicted. That he proactively took it upon himself to read so many medical books to prove his innocence was intelligent.
Thank you
The hardest challenge for science to overcome, is to match the "science of social media".
It is embarrassing to see many young people turn to FB, Instagram and TikTok searching for answers.
Listening to influencers (only the word in itself is already appalling) is way more interesting than finding out yourself through education.
Science is apparently not sexy enough to gain any attention for longer than a minute or so.
Always surprising to see how many people decide against their own best interests...
Hot chicks is the answer. Pay hot chicks to explain science and we'll have universal acceptance by the weekend. Well, male acceptance that is, we'll probably have to use cats and avocado's for the girls.
We try to make it look interesting through fiction books.
Seems to be working, but we want a wider audience, of course ^^
Most of us Rationalists became atheists around the age of 12 or 13. Do you really think that all of these religious adults are just less educated than we were at that age? Obviously it has nothing to do with the environment. It is just genetics. Most humans are not capable of rational thought, it's not what we evolved to do. Those of us who are rational are just born with genetic mutations.
The problem is The Left have infected science and academia to such as large extent it became (proto) religious. Atheism got polluted by Scientism and Wokery, and its Humanist pretensions soon turned into Transhumanist Activism in the form of Transgender Activism..... It can certainly be argued the imaginary / spiritual transhumanists of religion helped cement ideals such as Eternal Life, Omnipotence, Super Powers, Animal-Human Chimeras, Heaven & Hell (TM)... Science and Tech. will make these real and The Intelligently Designed will most likely inherit the Earth... Neo-beings of Planet Terra... At least ye olde religions don't make their god-awful beliefs REAL.. As a Realist mainstream science is too full of SCI-WOO.. Here's a Realist's Universe (cut'n'paste to annoy people!).
--
I've followed the evidence and the math and see The Standard Model, QFT, QCD, QED as a load of old fudge that obscure as much as they predict. Evidence points to single / dual field (depending on your viewpoint) consisting of +ve field cells (base quanta, +1) close-packed by free-flowing, compressible, displace-able -ve electro-gas, trying to be as balanced as possible.. An 'empty' universe is a ball of equidistant, stationary cells and gas..
--
Empty field may be impossible as the universe may have a constant jiggle as it can't ever quite find that perfect balance. In The 'Beginning' (not of the field, but of matter) this could have started a Big Matter Formation Chain Reaction, as could a Big Hit from another universe. Cells were kicked free with 'Full Escape Energy', forming positrons with the excess -ve electro-gas left behind forming electrons. The far more balanced field trying to stay that way repels the imbalance spherically from all directions.
--
Two positrons collided with 1 electron with the same energy from opposite directions to strongly bond into a Proton more than 2 electrons hit 1 positron to from an anti-proton. As positrons and electrons ALWAYS exist in pairs a hydrogen plasma soup emerged (instead of an anti-hydrogen soup). Only reaction symmetry is broken (as it should be in an imperfect universe, which all universes containing matter are), e_p symmetry is preserved.
--
Each positron continuously attracts and each electron traps 1 quanta of surrounding -ve electro gas away from the rest of the universe so field with matter is compacted while voids expand... Dark Gravity... Gravity itself can be modelled as a field density gradient, but alternatively as a -ve gas flow gradient, with inflows towards matter, then particle centres where they collide with opposite inflows before spiralling out at 90' (particle spin / galactic dark matter replacement). On a macro scale spins are all over the place so outflows collide laterally in all directions, cancelling out their lateral force, leaving the inward, gravity force.
--
When a charged particle moves there is spin direct bias at 90' to the direction of travel. This is due to more -ve gas entering the particle from the direction of travel. Spins can go straight to the inflow of an entangled particle, instead of spiralling out. Energy is conserved so a larger, external magnetic field loop forms.
--
Neutrinos are a field cell displacement wave where 1 to 3 cells move forward 1 to 3 cells (or possibly .5 to 1.5 cells in .5 cell width jumps) before stopping. This carries the weak force. It has to hit a particle centre directly to knock it free.
--
Particle centres obey the Pauli Exclusion Principle but their surrounding field warp do not and can superimpose on one another (superposition). Photons are a ball of compressed field that further warps the field around it. When a photon or particle is fired through one of two very close together slits their field warps interfere in front, forming 'wave guides' the particle focal point follows randomly. Other detectors destroy the interference pattern so the particle goes straight ahead.
just make sure you get your next covid booster okay?
This was awesome, I thought I had seen all of Richard’s documentaries. Richard gives me peace ✌️
Seen this before a long time ago, it's brilliant! Had to watch it all again and it's just as good now as I remember watching it the first time.
this man has opened my eyes a long time a go 😉thanks
Richard is the greatest.
I love this man. I could cry 😭
Thankyou , Prof.Richard .... I have watched your every documentary , debate , Movie everything.... name it and I have watched it ....
I am from A Village , here in Uttarakhand India ....
Sir David Atturnborough , Prof Jim Al khalli and You Sir are my Favourite ..... Thankyou ❤
What a wonderful video, pleasure to see it again. 39:00 If only we could have assisted Douglas with his cable management, although pales in priority and significance to his gifts to the world 🙂
Fun fact: Jocelyn Bell Burnell, appearing at 34:24, is the radio astronomer who first discovered the pulsar in 1967 at the age of only 24 years old! She really looks younger than her age here considering that she was around 53 in 1996.
I know I'm an Atheist in an Scientism Preacher's echo chamber but please explain how, at least post 1950s hyper-science projects, have done anything practically useful. Ever larger particle accelerators that do not, and will not because they cannot find any new useful particles... Climate Control Science that threatens to pollute the world while robbing it... 100+ uber-wasteful Tokamaks - trillions of dollars and Watts wasted worldwide... Deep Space Astronomy past identifying galaxies (and even that was not practically useful to humanity)... Then there's the hyper-destructive Nuclear World War 2 - The Nuclear Test War.... Your lot have wasted more than all the druggies and religious idiots on the planet, by a long way.
I became a member yesterday of your lovely channel. I am a mathematician and it is through your books my eyes were opened to the wonders of the living world. After I recovered from COVID I bought a copy of Darwin : The life of a Tormented Evolutionist by Adrian James and Desmond Moore and read it completely. I was stuck by the audacity Darwin's thinking. I hope you won't mind if I say I am a big fan of yours but Charles Darwin is my hero.
Wish I could've been able to attend one of his lectures 😔
That's like the top of my bucket list.
The school part was one of the most awesome things this show prepared. That's one of the reasons i am also interested in becoming a teacher too, cause to show kids that science can be fun and interesting too 🥰😍
To understand you need intelligence! People should question everything but they don't because they don't have the knowledge and even though you try to help them understand they cannot comprehend so they chose the easy route. Science is beautiful!
Thank God for science.
I am not sure how to express my brain / my mind / my soul....at the knowledge that is presented, with deep humanity. 😊
Hope you can make more of these available on here . i´m pretty sure i´ve seen most of your tv appearances through the years but only a few can be found on youtube and this one was totally new to me. for preservations sake, and for our great entertainment and enlightenment i hope the rights can be favorably negotiated.
Bravo!
Why did you post this ? Since I don't understand the quote, I don't understand if you are agreeing or disagreeing with it. The quote seems totally useless and demands some explanation, even some evidence. Please expound on this subject.

This is off-topic, but is The Genetic Book of the Dead only going to be for Kindle? I'd love to pre-order it, but I only see it for Kindle. I've read all your other books, so I'm very much anticipating this release. Thank you for all of your work!
I've read all of Dawkins science books 📚 Haven't read the biographies yet! I'm also really looking forward to his new book, got a long wait, though! Don't think it's being released until October 2024!
what a work Dr. dawkins
I watched and read a lot of Richard Dawkins’ videos and books. I found that he mostly focus on the Christian and Muslim’s fairy tales, but very few ideas on Buddhism and Hindu. I wish he could give some more speech on these two. 😊
And joodaism
Yes, cause you can show clearly how christian and islam preaching influence daily life and how they mess with politics.
Look at buddhism and study the hindu countries .... you will find it amazing how these asian faiths teach a rather peaceful way of life ..... then totally close their eyes to the world , ignore the horrible situation in their own country , and let dictator run their country.
While totally peaceful monks sit in remote shrines and pray. The connection between religious faith and daily politics is diffrent or missing.
It is stunning.
Unlike Islam and Christianity, Hinduism and Buddhism have some interesting meditation techniques that do actually affect the brain/mind in a very interesting way that can give rise to "mystical" experiences. No doubt these experiences are explained by what a person is doing with their brain when practicing these meditations, but at least there is something real there, unlike prayer where you're trying to connect with something supernatural. Buddhism especially is quite compatible with secularism
Here's a fairytale for you. Everything just existed. Lmao sounds like stuff of fiction.
@@anonxnorso called Hinduism is adulteration of Buddhism
Thank god for Richard Dawkins 😊 He got me out of the Atheist closet.
Yes...forever grateful. I read the high school version first...I was hooked.
"Thank God". 😂 Great Pun.
Same!
@BG-fm5od It was probably too much concentrated knowledge and truth all at once. It is understandable that people then turn to religion; it is also much easier to believe without having to prove that the belief is true than to know and understand science.
I see what you did there 😂
Excellent
Wow, great video 👌👍
Thank you Prof. Dawkins for everything , i have so much to thank you for. I wish you many more years of health snd happiness. You books "The God Delusion " and "The Greatest Show on Earth" really opened my eyes.
He has opened up the world for me. I am profoundly changed by his argument. I don't know if it's for the better but one day it just snapped that there was no man behind the curtain. I was almost seventy yrs old so it was a big deal to me.
It was a loss in a way.
Dawkins is simply training wheels to break free from Religion. As he himself has said, "physicists say the Physical Constants are fine-tuned for Life". There may well be a creator but it can't be any of the Religious Gods, past or present. Fine-tuning precludes any physical interference.
Respect! Best wishes!
Brexit MEANS Brexit
Beautiful Video
i would never want us to abandon science EVER
i also dont want it to be a religion where im not allowed to question "the science" as weve seen in the last few years..
I adore Richard Dawkins' work, books, and social influencer. Please keep this up. Your wisdom is needed.
(a minor criticism on this video, which is fantastic): it has footage in the 4:3 format. This immediately marks it as "old". GenZ see 4:3 videos as "quaint" & "from decades ago when we understand less." Yes, that's an incorrect view, but it's pervasive. Please crop 4:3 videos to 16:9 format - to present your videos in the best possible light. Still, it's fantastic!
Hello Sir, It'd be quite interesting to see you have a discussion with Swami Sarvapriyananda ji from RKM Vedanta Society of NY who often quotes you with other prominent atheist figures like Dennett or Hitchens in his lectures, on Vedantic philosophy, Buddhism and modern science. While I myself have not been particularly interested in spirituality, and have always tried to remain a scientific-minded person, I often find monks from RKM, Vedanta society quite interesting in their appoach to try to explain the Vedantic philosophy rationally (although I wouldn't say I fully understand or agree with them). Would be eagarly looking forward ro it.
I can guess Richard Dawkins' reaction to seeing your request . . . Why would I bother with such obfuscated claptrap ? Just a guess I must admit. However I personally find the pretentious mumbo-jumbo of Hinduism and Buddhism just as infuriating as the evangelic knuckleheads. The only positive aspect is that the Eastern crap is less violent. Their one accomplishment is introducing a mind numbing coma to it's ' ' Flock ' '.
It’s a absolute disrespectful disgrace that these hillbillies have the audacity to tell the greatest scientist in the world that he’s wrong
Stupendous Presentation of the beauty, grandeur of the universe through Dawkins' beautifully crafted, clarity of Scientific thought...immortalised....
Still no idea who the artist is that Richard mentioned, Watson and Crick I'm far more familiar with.
wait, why is there something from the 80s playing?
edit: Oh fuck me nevermind. It’s because his arguments are fucking timeless. these have been awesome

What a difference a question makes. What a difference a question makes?
It doesnt get more 90's british at its peak than professor Dawkins cruising the streets in a Rover 400 series in a wooly sweater
To make matter worse, some blend science and religion and teach that combination in university. They use "science" to confirm their belief.
“Science” is only possible with a traditional religious metaphysics
That is ridiculous to the most extreme

Any thoughts on what is happening in some Countries (NZ/Canada), where ‘indigenous knowledge’ from ‘first Nations peoples’, is being integrated and woven into the science curriculums of state Schools? On his website, is Jerry Coynes perhaps right to be concerned?
I'd be a lot more worried about mass forced experimental corporate drug pushers and lock-downers in Canada than even Wokes, when it comes to brainwashing and cr*pping on the masses. At least Christains stood up to the Scientific Dictatorship, as an Atheist myself.

If we all arise from a single cell, where is the concept of a minimum gene?
I am related to a cat in that case.
This is so so so beautiful.
With respect to "fine tuning", when debating creationists, why is it difficult to argue that a species, who developed their number system around the fact that they have 10 fingers, has found many fundemental constants to be "irrational".
Irrational numbers are irrational no matter what base you use.
Dawkins would disagree. See Poetry of Reality, 'Aliens, God...' ( 31m-33m) where Dawkins states the views of Physicists on fine-tuning.
They'll soon want science back after they've been chewing on dog legs for a few years, crouched in a decaying rail tunnel 😢
The case shown at 25:20 has little to do with science, but everything with CSI and related TV hypes.
Where are all of the SCIENTISTS asking about the distribution of steel down the Twin Towers? Where have they been for the last Two Decades? Is that too difficult a thought for them?
Have any of them heard of the Conservation of Momentum?
Where was the center of gravity of the tilted top of the South Tower? Did they send all of their Curiosity to Mars?
Richard Dawkins the legend ❤❤❤
I won't pay but enjoy watching anyway.
What a nightmare life would be if religion became law!
Death, do what you must but, please! Please! Please!...
Spare me the sermon!!!
It would be fair and objective to have all the different theories of origins taught in institutions of learning, but humans tend to be unfair and subjective.
Sure, but evolution is the only actual theory. Nothing else has evidence which supports such a claim. Just people making such claims. That is a hypothesis at best, not a theory. Evolution not only has evidence for the past, but can be observed in the present, and even manipulated to have an effect in the future, intentionally or not.
@SupachargedGaming In the teaching of different views of origins, it should be stated which proposals are regarded as theories and which are regarded as hypotheses or models, as is done in all other disciplines. A sound hypothesis or promising model may eventually attain theory status.
Unbelievable to see Douglas Adams, the friendly giant, make a guest appearance.
And of course a solid piece of popular-scientific educating programming
It was a little bittersweet too, knowing he would pass away just a few years later.
Is there evidence that more people are susceptible to rational thought if they are given greater exposure to it? Or is the reason only some of us ask scientific questions about nature because genetics has lead our brains to be wired in a way that makes that possible, or more likely, or more likely to trigger a pleasure response? Have studies been done on this?
There is no difference between rational and irrational thought when it comes to neurochemical reward. Some people get pleasure from debate whether rational or bull***t.. I can argue Science and Tech. are the biggest threat to Homo Sapien Sapiens, quite rationally, as an Atheist.... Rational people tend to be more prone to irrational mental episodes and depression. There is a strong correlation. Maybe they are suckers for punishment, or maybe too much brain-buzz from thinking burns them out. Clearly happened to Richard during the Plandemic when he went all FORCED MASS EXPERIMENTAL DRUG LORD on us... He's a CO2 phobe too... An NWO Preacher... COLLECTIVE INSANITY RATIONALISED.

This episode speaks of the need to reevaluate the death penalty. To err is human, and even experts are fallible. Court systems aren’t the only ones that should be using brain, experts, prison systems, and primary care physicians as well need them. I don’t understand the same concept as handing somebody medication for something you haven’t even looked at. SPECT imaging shows PTSD, AAD, and so many other causes to the symptoms Doctors are treating with prescriptions that don’t work.

This vid will only persuade those who already knew something about believing science, As R Dawkins said " I believe that science is still the only way of finding answers to life 's mysteries" (21:36). Richard Dawkins believe, he do not say he knows, he said he belive, he 's got faith. It seems that this speech is internal propaganda, those who believe what you said will believe what you say. That is not going to grow up any audience or convince anyone of different beliefs from his own. Fun!

It's so hard to hear all the nonsense that come from believers. Thank you Richard for your work to educate this deluded people. If believers had evidence for their beliefs, they won't need faith.
