    Product Description
The Breville Smart Grill's Element IQ technology bridges the gap between indoor and outdoor at an unrivaled new level. Heat sensors embedded in the grill plates compensate for the temperature drop when cold food is placed onto the pre-heated surface. The sensors then detect this heat drop and compensate by injecting heat for rapid recover back to the desired cooking temperatures. The 1800-watt embedded heating design ensures maximum heat into the plates for faster cooking and reduced pre-heating time. This creates a BBQ-quality sear and sizzle. The flat bottom plate is suitable for eggs and pancakes while the top plate is ribbed to sear meats. Plate positions are interchangeable and can be extended into an opened, flat 'BBQ Mode.'
Breville BGR820XL Smart Grill sears meat, keeping it tender and juicy
The Breville BGR820XL Smart Grill uses Element IQ technology and an embedded element heating system to sear meat on your countertop that tastes just as good as meat seared on the barbecue (closeup on right).
    Why the Breville Smart Grill?
Every Breville product begins with a simple moment of brilliance. The Breville Smart Grill began with the simple fact that searing meat requires continuous high heat. What kind of machine cooks as well as a barbecue, but cleans fast like a frypan? The answer is the Breville Smart Grill, which allows you to sear meat indoors at a high consistent temperature without making a mess. It uses Element IQ technology and an 1800W heating system to electronically detect heat loss and provide rapid heat recovery.
Other Features: Easy cleaning and Versatility
In addition to Element IQ and embedded plates, the Breville BGR820XL Smart Grill has numerous features: the top plate has six different adjustable heights that can be used for large sandwiches, small sliders, open-faced melts, or anything inbetween; the plates are removable for easier cleaning and can be interchanged depending on your needs (so the ribbed plate is either on the bottom or the top). The plates are nonstick plates made from cast aluminum coated with titanium infused Quantanium, for oil-free cooking and easy clean up. The housing is stainless steel, with die-cast arms.
The base can be tilted at an angle to drain, or lay perfectly flat for eggs, pancakes, and paninis. You can use it closed and use it to grill like a Panini press, or open it 180 degrees into barbecue mode, in which fat is drained from both plates into the drip tray. There are three different temperature settings (low, Panini, and sear, ranging from 320F to 450F), temperature and time control dials, and a countdown timer and sound alert.

This link only says Non-Stick Plates: "NON-STICK PLATES Premium quality PFOA free". Whereas the Amazon link for the Breville BGR700BSS Sear and Press; Says:" CERAMIC GRILL AND GRIDDLE PLATES". I can only assume, that if a manufacturer doesn't reveal what material is used, It must be Teflon. With all of the controversy over Teflon, Why do they still use it? I would guess it to be COST! Thanks for your input!

@@SidsTips The GreenPan has been on my shortlist. It's less wattage than the BGR820LX, which may not sear steaks as well? It's priced at $10.00 less on PreenPan's website. Wis you had one now, could save me the grief of buying one and not being happy with it. Be sure you try a steak on it!!!

@@danielspencer5023 I usually cook veggie burgers and hamburgers, but perhaps I can try a steak to. I get 5% back on Amazon with my Amazon card, so I may just get it there.

I just retired my first Breville grill. I got tired of replacing other consumer brand named grills every year or so, at $70 to $100 each. We made the investment in the Breville over ten years ago and it never let us down. We finally wore the coatings off the cook surfaces and had to let it go. It was expensive, but it paid for itself in a couple of years. I estimate it costs about $30 a year to own. My old one did not have removeable cook surfaces, I'm looking forward to the removeable surfaces to help with cleanup.

I had one of these about 8 years ago, or so, and it was wonderful! The food tasted amazing, however, the top grill would fall off, so I returned it. But in all fairness to Breville, I may have not been putting the top grill back on properly after cleaning, so I really want to try another one now! I love Breville and have a Breville Smart Oven and a Breville Espresso machine. Both work perfectly, and I've had the espresso machine for about 8 years, and have used it almost every day, and never a problem. One hint about how to tell the finest Breville products.... always buy the 'brushed' stainless steel, not the shiny ones!

Just got mine a few days ago. I think they may have fixed anything that may have been a slight problem several years ago, as the booklet is marked 2017, and looks different from what I recall. Also, I don't recall that there was a warning on the screen if either plate wasn't inserted properly. Now there is. I'm amazed at how good it makes food taste. The Smart Grill is the next best thing to a real outdoor barbecue! Expensive compared to anything similar, but as the old saying goes 'You get what you pay for', and generally you get more than your money's worth, considering that most high-quality items will far outlive the cheaper ones. Case in point: I went through three different Espresso machines that were less expensive than the Breville, and though mine was about $350 (here in Canada) the first one, from another company, was $100. The $100 one lasted about a year. However, the Breville not only lasted 3, 1/2 years ($100 per year, comparatively speaking), but is still going strong after 8 years!

Great to get your long tern thoughts on this. Have the pressure/slow cookers and that gets used a lot too.
However, being from the UK, I just don't get your plug sockets. Instant power on insertion and easily pulls out just done't seem safe to me.

Can the lower and upper plate temperatures be adjusted separately? Can it cook without a cooking program? For example, I want to toast bread.

You cannot adjust the plates separately. I just turn it on and cook something, so you should be good to go with bread. This is another grille if you want to adjust separately: amzn.to/3WdGekB
