I've seen a lot of sad and angry comments about Taichi however I'd like to say. (SPOILERS) . . . . . Even though Taichi's love is one-sided, that it's to be expected. His story was never about him getting Chihaya. The original story was about Chihaya and Arata, and it's very evident if you read the first chapter of the MANGA that those two are set to be endgame, the author said she wanted to write a story about a queen and a meijin. Originally Taichi was supposed to be a secondary character, however, upon seeing his hardwork she decided to give him a major role and the story became a "trio" story but the core story is still there, Chihaya and Arata will fulfill their dreams. Taichi's importance is to show how a person can change, he will redeem himself and learn to love himself finally letting go of Chihaya (in the romantic sense). There is no denying Chihaya cares deeply for Taichi, but that love is just not romantic.
Taichi plays karuta just because of Chihaya. Not because he likes karuta, I think. Arata and Chihaya are the ones who genuinely love karuta. I'm rooting for Chihaya and Taichi, but as I'm watching this anime, it's only natural if Chihaya ends up with Arata. They share the same purpose.

I think the author used mashima only as clickbait for drama.. but there some point I didn't get it with the author.. why frequently used mashima ( supportive MC) to this story.. why didn't she focusing on chihaya and arata (main MC) on story development.. especially arata he barely enough to have screen time..
@@ahmadshahrul8225 She upgraded Taichi to be a main character, but there really isn't concrete goal with him like Chihaya and Arata being queen and meijin. In my opinion the reason why it focused on him was to make get over with his character so she can focus in the original 2. Plus among the 3, Taichi is the one with the most flaws/inner conflicts, given that Arata and Chihaya are rather simple, one-track minded characters. As for Arata's screentime he is supposed to be away and be mysterious I suppose, in the end his biggest turning point is getting out of his grandfather's shadow and that is just in these latest chapters.

Taichi actually followed Chihaya to the same high school. Knowing Chihaya, she would have definitely asked taichi to join because they promised each other when they were young but she actually realize she was forcing him so she apologized and told him that it was okay for him not to join but in the end, Taichi was the one who agreed to join. She wasn't controlling him. (just saying, its quite unfair to say she was controlling him and was being selfish)😊
I feel like Taichi needs to focus on himself now instead of Chihaya 24/7. Also, you don’t always end up with the person who’s always around you. And you can’t force yourself to love someone. You just do.

Taichi had no chance AT ALL since Day 1. He was only a platonic friend. Arata was always the one in Chihaya's heart ever since they first met. I know most fangirls want Taichi for Chihaya since they've fallen in love with his character, but Chihaya is Chihaya. Arata is her endgame, no doubt about it.
Taichi will be just fine. Chiahaya will end up like Midori Sakurazawa from Fujisaki; spending most of her time coaching karuta. Taichi needs someone like Haruka Inokuma(4xQueen) family woman. I think Sumire is a better match for Taichi.

INTRODUCIINNG: a long comment/rant.... i'm sorry I know a lot of people complain about Chihaya being stupid and how Taichi is SOOO much better for her, but i love how the author made it clear that that's not how things actually go. Psychologically it makes perfect sense that a character like Chihaya would be more fascinated by Arata rather than Taichi. She is a very goal driven character, and sure she is selfish, but she goes after the things she wants and constantly strives to be better at the thing she loves. She wants to be the best. And Arata is very similar in that sense, that he knows what his goal is and works hard for himself. And on the other hand, Taichi has always worked hard for Chihaya, not for himself. He's always catered for her needs and put all of his energy into her, not into himself. And while you think that those things would give him higher chances with Chihaya, they have the opposite effect for a character like her. Taichi didn't have a chance to find a thing that he loves to do for himself because he went after the thing Chihaya loves to get closer to her. We had many examples of him struggling with karuta and not enjoying it, and that's because he never wanted to work hard for it because he was inspired by it and wanted to be the best, it's because he wanted to get on the same wavelenght as Chihaya. And he was bound to quit eventually. Chihaya always looks for inspiration and Arata is just that. Somebody who has a clear goal for himself in life and that goal is very similar to her own, he makes her want to work even harder for herself. Shinobu also has a similar role as Arata in Chihayas life, but with more of a challenge in the mix. I think the direction where Taichi is headed is very good for him and i hope that he'll find something he truly enjoys doing. He's the most developed character and i'm really interested in what will happen to him. He might even have a chance with Chihaya, who knows. But he definitely took a right path for himself. The author has made such a great story so far and i don't doubt at all that the ending will be satisfactory. And also Chihaya is a great character, she gets so much needless hate. #TeamChihaya

The thing is that Chihaya thought she loved the idea of Arata...since she saw him as a Karuta god and all but that's it...it was all Karuta she couldn't seperate the both of them....but after Taichi's leaving the club and all the incidents that followed she finally saw a world outside of Karuta and realised her true feelings for the person she wanted by her side and that's Taichi
I don't think she puts Arata on a pedestal from what we see in the anime. If Arata suddenly decided to leave karuta and go somewhere far away, Chihaya would try and find him and convince him to not quit karuta again. Arata introduced the world of karuta to Chihaya. Yeah Taichi was always by her side but Arata gave her her everything. They both play a crazy amount of karuta because they love it so much and strive to be the best because of themselves. Taichi played karuta to be by Chihaya's side and to be closer to her. Arata and Taichi share similar goals while having opposite personalities. Personally I do appreciate a person that tries their best to strive in an area just to be closer to me but I don't think Chihaya thinks that way

The fact that the first thing she thought to do after Taichi's confession was to recall Arata's confession and depict what he really meant by "lets play karuta together" is enough proof to determine which ship is endgame. I do feel bad for Taichi but boi simply never had a chance. He will be a better player when he's playing for himself instead of for being close to Chihaya.
Remember he never actually loved karuta , he is a studious boy..and he always come first, in terms of studies.. (But still he managed to come in forth place in all over Japan) I think it's pretty impressive..
Much like other people I never got to see much of Arata for the first season or two, so I kind of forgot that him and Chihaya would always have a special bond. I was originally rooting for Taichi but then I realized that he only plays karuta because he loves Chihaya. Arata and Chihaya are both very driven to achieve their goals simply because they love the game of karuta. I believe that they're perfect for each other regardless of how much screentime Arata got or how much Taichi was there to support Chihaya.

I absolutely hate love sick fangirls. they always find a reason to hate on female anime characters and at this point its just becoming pathetic. you all know damn well if that the lead for this show was an attractive man and a love sick girl joined his club because she wanted to spend more time with him, you all would be like "he's focusing on his dream, no one ever forced her to do those things,). the double standards y'all have against women is insane. you complain about not having strong female leads who aren't solely focused on love and then the second you get it you're more invested on the second male lead that you see occasionally simply because he's attractive and then proceed to shit on the female lead for not developing the same weird ass feeling that you all have as well. its disgusting and quite frankly, flat out creepy. chihaya never strung taichi along, she literally never even gave that man hope in regards to an actual relationship. all she talks about is karuta and arata. taichi only has himself to blame. its no ones fault but his own that he tried to 'pursue her' (if one can even call it that) for so long and its his fault that he took so long to confess too.
Arata is such a guy 🥰 he straight up confessed without hesitation. Taichi was just playing games instead of being upfront. And he knew how Chihaya felt about Arata from the beginning.

I really didn't wanted to watch the third season because this is when Taichi was more heartbroken, I'm a little bit more in the Team Arata, but still, I just don't want any of them to suffer this much 😭 For me this is really one of the most heartbreaking triagle love's in a shoujo.
Normally I hate love triangles but this one tugs my heart, as much as the Yona/Hak/SooWon from Yona of the Dawn. You are invested in all three and it really breaks your heart when they suffer.

It's weird after that watching this i watched Strike the blood Asami Seto (chihaya's seiyuu) voices Asagi the secondary love interest who is much in love with Kojou who is voiced by Yoshimasa Hosoya (Arata's seiyuu)
I stan Arata and Chihaya. Arata influenced Chihaya to step into the Karuta. It must be a strong feeling towards him so she is able to change her dream from seeing her sister's success to become a Queen. But I like Taichi's personality too.
I don't know about romance, but taichi entered karuta to be with chihaya, but as episodes go by, i feel like he is actually liking karuta genuinely. Right now, chihaya is madly obsessed with karuta, I hope author could bring her a little out of that karuta zone to aid her overall character development.
I love all the characters but saying that Chihaya should accept Taichi because he should be rewarded for his hard work and dedication to her is so….. shallow. Chihaya cares for him but not in the romantic sense, and she shouldn’t feel obliged to. It’s the expectation and demanding of the other person to have to reciprocate. That’s literally saying that because fans like Taichi the crush, for him to be happy the Chihaya MUST return his feelings. She doesn’t exist for his happiness. Turns out she was an idiot that didn’t understand her own feelings until she lost him and she only conflated her feelings for Arata with Karuta. Took becoming Queen and for it to be put plainly by her kouhai that she still needed/wanted Taichi beside her even without Karuta. She loved the Karuta club, but she didn’t realize til the end what she loved most about the Karuta club was Taichi. It isn’t as if Taichi forced anything on her either, he selflessly placed himself in uncomfortable situations for his education and family life to make her dream a reality and when he couldn’t hide his feelings or pain anymore he left. Because it isn’t fair to him either.
i still havent watched this anime and based on the comments a lot are complaining about how the second lead should get the main girl, but watching this, idc about everything cause I've fallen in love with that glasses guy's accent whatever that is !!
To be honest Taichi is the main lead and Arata is the second male lead. I've never read or seen a non existent male lead in my life. Arata barely had any screen time. That's why people fell in love with Taichi, He was always around and you grew an attachment with his from the start. The anime literally started with them meeting after 3 yrs in the same high school.
Sorry this is a long rant and character study of Taichi and why he’s awesome and cool. He deserves so much more than the face him. (Ps there will be spoilers) I understand that Chihaya and Arata were supposed to be the ideal couple of the show, or maybe it wasn’t at this point I don’t know. I like Taichi as a character so much, he got a lot of development and it would be a waste to not reward him. At the beginning before Karuta it was clear Taichi liked Chihaya. Then for him Arata comes into the picture as an invader, and he doesn’t like him. That’s why he bullies Arata at first, Chihaya stood up for Arata which was the right decision. Then it goes on that Taichi can’t make her get rid of Arata, so he learns to accept him instead. Later Chihaya finds Taichi in the same school and they start the club. Get all the people who they need but Taichi isn’t as invested as Chihaya. Then when they go to Arata he’s more interested to get closer to her on the trip. He sees how much she cares for Arata and it makes sense but in this case it still isn’t firm evidence that she likes Arata so he keeps on trying. They eventually get to there first team match and they lose because of her. It’s ok though they still have the individual games. They get there and she plays Shinobu, she cries about it and that’s when she cries about losing. This is a sign for Taichung that he’s not as invested in something that Chihuahua likes and that’s why she’s not paying attention to him. This is when he learns to try harder in the game, for Chihaya. They watch the queen and master game and then the next season. This is all the development that leads us wanting us to know more. The next season is still about getting better at the game and they but Arata is now interested, Taichi feels invaded again this later turns into a little bit of a tension between them or at least it should I think. The fact that he feels invaded again but not doing anything is probably because he doesn’t want to be a coward again. Chihaya and Arata get closer and every time that happens Taichi feels the need to stop it. He says that he doesn’t want it to distract her but in truth it’s because he doesn’t want them to get close and it would distract him more. Slowly Taichi starts getting really good at the game and is invested just about the same if not more than Chihaya and he’s really good, but there’s no passion. He got so invested because of Chihaya, so when she’s watching he he does worse, maybe because he doesn’t truly want to be better than her or because he gets nervous. He wants to get to class A and when he does Chihaya is happy, Taichi is confused why because of the game that was happening at the moment, he was invested so if she stops being invested it would all be for nothing. When Chihaya is still looking at Arata though he feels cheated but is too much of a nice guy to notice. Taichi loses focus and he only strives to be good because he’s good and he doesn’t want his drive to be Chihaya, someone who’s not looking at her. He’s so good and then they play each other. At this point it’s all on who’s better because they each got good but Taichi was working harder than Chihaya then they face each other, Taichi needs to win this and he feels like if he wins he’ll be rewarded with a lot of happiness. He loses and he gets overcome with being the best forgetting about Chihaya. He feels no joy in it. Then he plays Arata in a game, he loses there as well but finds out the he said something to her. It made him and her flustered so he knew. He now feels more pressure to tell her. There are so many things that are similar to him and Seo because they both don’t play the game for themselves, and they both don’t enjoy it. Showing that you need to have fun with the game before devoting all your time and effort into. Later though he tells Chihaya how he feels and is rejected. He wasn’t just rejected or all the things about Chihaya he’s rejected of all the effort he put into Karuta. He doesn’t enjoy the game because Chihaya doesn’t like him. His passion was taken away. I honestly enjoy Taichi a lot. He believes in hard work and skill. He doesn’t have faith in himself but that’s ok because he works hard so he can acompásate all the things he’s bad in. He’s awesome and want hint to end up with Chihaya. Only reason I stayed with the show and if they don’t get together in the end or at least make Taichi get something from all of this, then I will hate this show. Thank you for your time.
chihayafuru puts more emphasis on chihaya evolving as a karuta player not as a nice high school girl. when we speak of romance. i am shocked that people are fighting over something so trivial when the mc of the story is not only dumb, greedy and selfish too and after a while she never understood some small things as love at all until late with being confessed where she is acting like an idiot. most of her character development is on karuta, the rest is barely less than 10 or 20%. are we going to ignore what's important and fight over romance? yes the author has a favorite, yes taichi this, arata this, this no, that no... but really how exactly do you see chihaya in all of this?
MAJOR SPOILERS IF YOU ARE NOT UP TO DATE WITH CH 225! Very perceptive observation! Chihayafuru is entirely about one character, Chihaya. After all the entire story is a back-story bring told by Chihaya from the Maijin-Queen tournament in Tokyo where she is 18 and down 0-2 in a five game series. She opens her story in Ch 1 with the following clear statement about herself まだ情熱を知らない私 which loosely translated is "I still do not understand my own strong emotions." Does Chihaya really love the game of Karuta in the way that Arata or Shinobu do, or is her single minded devotion to Karuta a way to avoid having to come to terms with her own feelings? I think this is an open question at this point in the story. After all, after the Taichi confession, Chihaya as leader and founder of the School Karuta club, is hosting an induction ceremony for new students into the club, when she drops the mic , and runs off, chasing after Taichi. That does not seem to show a strong love of the game or devotion to her club. She wildly comes running down the street yelling "don't leave", where a young man who has just confessed could easily hear "Don't leave me" and think that his love has actually been accepted. So he goes to kiss her, and she does not respond so he honorably stops and does not force a full kiss. Chihaya is definitely being "dumb, greedy, and selfish" here!!! "but really how exactly do you see chihaya in all of this?" Point taken if one really cares about this story.

When I look at chihaya... the possible thing I can only say is the fact that many will think we have figured chihaya out... she cares about karuta, and the rest, character development.... well the manga hasn't ended just yet and if the author wanna bring something new on the table. This is the stage... the queen match...😎 honestly I fell in love with anime right away... and I dont wanna make a final judgment until the last chapter of the story. Rushing things ain't good. I wanna know more about her and how her journey will end. I dont care much about the romance or shipping. The plot itself matters. But so far chihaya has kinda showed much more of her till now. For the longest time (9 years), I thought that Chihaya really did love Karuta, but after the Taichi confession, I am not so sure now. Its going to come down to what happens in this Tournament. Chihaya has to now win three in a row to become Queen. In reality, that is very difficult, but in a story, very possible. What ever the author wants. So we will have to see where she takes us. Its been a fantastic ride so far both Manga and Anime. And I was very impressed that you saw the story as it is! where most others are hung up on Love Triangles.
@@folcwinep.pywackett8517 as fans we have to stick by the plot and not let our feelings get the better of us. Chihayafuru is not about who she ends up with or whether she wins or loses at times. The manga is about her journey, what she is learning. Of course she has flaws but so far I think we have been seeing just a big face of hers but not everything. And when it comes to romance, I always make sure I dont get swayed by it since the author chooses.... Now regarding her winning three matches, it is possible but hard. I think she hasn't found her drive to give her best fully. Maybe what she is thinking right now lies on the skills she acquired from others and her friends but her core... what is it really? That one is very deep and until she finds it winning ain't gonna be easy. But something suo dono told her about being the queen got me concerned though. Unless I am wrong. We have to see how much growth she will have to attain to keep up with the current queen
As a fan who just binged the series in a week I was rooting for Taichi the whole way as I felt that all his hard work should and will pay off in the end but I enjoy the realism that Arata will always have that special place in Chihayas heart
In my opinion, it's true that Arata is the main reason of Chihaya's dream, but Taichi is the one who strengthen Chihaya to accomplish her dream. I prefer Taichi x Chihaya...
I respect your opinon. But with Arata, he did more than give her a dream. Chihaya was pretty neglected as kid, her parents payed more attention to her sister than her. When Arata told her she had talent for karuta, he was the very first person to acknowledge her, to make her see she could make something out of herself and step back of being in her sister's shadow.

Do you feel she is compatible with him? If a guy sacrifices everything for Chihaya, do you think she would be happy with that? For me chihaya is in love to arata but she didn't give answer to arata when they meet because taichi confess too and she don't want to destroy their friendship.

At the starting of the series.. I had hoped chihaya to end-up with arata..but after watching some episodes, I realised how hard taichi was trying in his life..like his mother was very very strict..with him in About everything... he was doing everything as his mother told him, without a question..(of course he was a bully at first,but developed himself later on..) And then after all of that, when he start following his heart about loving chihaya..he got a heartbreak... (Of course some of you might say that he didn't let chihaya to have arata's email but i think everyone will do that if they get a sense of insecurity about their love once ,I think its a kind of jealously, and jealously is common in love..) In that sense, I think he really deserves chihaya.. And if he still got a heartbreak, then the writer shouldn't have shown us his story in such a sadistic way..instead of taichi's story the writer should have shown us arata's story.. (I mean if we forget about taichi's sufferings and hardwork for chihaya..,And realised arata and chihaya from the begging.. We shall find out that they are meant to be end-up together..) Done watching the anime. It got me hooked! Gotta read the manga! Anyways, whoever ends up with chihaya I will be happy, they all deserve a happy life you see. Taichi is a good guy, so reliable but needs a lot of improvement, I want him for chihaya. As for Arata, HE IS MY TYPE OF GUY, he is such a soft guy, I want him to end up with chihaya as well

Taichi doesn't deserve a "better" women. He just needs to grow up and deal with it. Taichi throughout the story has always been a coward. He took arata's glasses, begs arata to not tell chihaya anything, tried to keep chihaya away from arata, tried to cut arata off, and ends up running away from kurata. You think someone like this deserves better? Arata respected their space when he thought that chihaya and taichi were dating, he wanted to keep their friendship, he got over his own grief over the loss of his grandpa for taichi and chihaya, he wanted to keep their kurata, and he just wanted to have a team who he can enjoy kurata with. If anything, arata deserves to have a better friend.
Just wanna put my comment here from a reply I did months ago because I wanna share my opinion regarding the story's romance and why I felt like Taichi and Chihaya ending up together made sense. "i know it’s been a year but just wanna comment that her “180” is kinda realistic imo. Dont forget they are teenagers who easily fall in love. It is very common how you don’t end up with your first crush just because you realize at the end how the foundation of your love was very weak in the first place. Chihaya fell easily for Arata just because she admired his Karuta, and she felt intense feelings when he confessed to her. However with Taichi, her bond with him is much stronger because of what they’ve been through together, and even when Arata is there, she can’t help but feel hurt and lonely when Taichi left. It was very clear in the story how they portrayed the dynamic of their relationship - Arata is the one she admired, while Taichi was the one she cannot live without."

Chihaya is fond of Arata from the very beginning. She admired him so much and obviously liked Arata. However, its kinda empty. Arata only realised that he likes her when she was already good in Karuta, in her winning season. But Taichi likes her since childhood. He's always there for Chihaya, in winning and losing season. There's a bond between them that goes beyond friendship. They are a perfect match. But Arata and Chihaya is good match too. Like what the heck I love the three of them, its really hard to make predictions. Whether you want her to end up with Arata or Taichi, you simply cannot hate the other.
Shinobu X Chihaya for the win! I'm a male but they are my favorite characters lol. but seriously I only watched the anime for the Karuta tournaments/fights. I have no interest in their love life. If I have to choose then it should be Arata and Chihaya. Taichi is kinda irritating.
I like Taichi, he is the type of character you would like to improve the most. BUT I want Chihaya and Arata to end up together! They both love Karuta so much (and the way Arata calls Chihaya's name is wholesome), I can even see them teaching their kids how to play Karuta in the future. As for Taichi, he's just not into Karuta that much.. I guess he came to love it in the process of chasing Chihaya. I've seen Chihaya and Arata, smiling and having fun playing their opponents but I've never seen that kind of smile in Taichi's face. That's why he needs to be broken so he can find his own strength,his own dream, with or without Chihaya, he must grow.
Everyone here talking about couples and shit. I'm over here wanting them all to be together (not romantically). I think they all need each other. Arata needs them to get past his grandfather's death, break his notions on team play, even help him figure what his style of karuta is. Chihaya needs an exemplar to follow in Arata (even if it's her idea of him), and Taichi to help towards them. Taichi needs Chihaya to help him break out of thinking for himself, and Arata to push him out of his cowardice.
Taichi? Arata? Look, I'm just pissed only 21 volumes have been translated officially into English, out of 44. And I've never liked fan translations. Also. I'd classify this more as dumbstruck, than lovestruck. It's a first for her, she's processing the confession and doesn't know what to make of it. She keeps replaying the event, she did this too with Taichi oddly enough. Later clips I would classify more as accepting of his (Arata's) feelings since she blushes. It will be interesting to see how the relationship gets fleshed out with Chihaya getting more character growth. Cause her feelings for Arata are also synonymous with karuta. A functional relationship, one connection doesn't make. So as she gets ready at some point to become a high school teacher, and she has to become more aware of the needs of her students and teacher faculty alike, how that will shape her and her feelings towards everything will be *really* fascinating to see! She's still young, plenty of room and time to grow as a person!

Its easy to misconstrue the love you feel for your best friend as romantic love. I did, and it never ends well. You will always love them, but its different than what you feel for the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. I didn't want to lose his friendship, but it was never meant to be romantic. I totally understand Chihaya's dilemma.

Even though Taichi's love is one-sided, that it's to be expected. His story was never about him getting Chihaya. The original story was about Chihaya and Arata, and it's very evident if you read the first chapter of the MANGA that those two are set to be endgame, the author said she wanted to write a story about a queen and a meijin. Originally Taichi was supposed to be a secondary character, however, upon seeing his hardwork she decided to give him a major role and the story became a "trio" story but the core story is still there, Chihaya and Arata will fulfill their dreams. Taichi's importance is to show how a person can change, he will redeem himself and learn to love himself finally letting go of Chihaya (in the romantic sense). There is no denying Chihaya cares deeply for Taichi, but that love is just not romantic.
Taichi plays karuta just because of Chihaya. Not because he likes karuta, I think. Arata and Chihaya are the ones who genuinely love karuta. I'm rooting for Chihaya and Taichi, but as I'm watching this anime, it's only natural if Chihaya ends up with Arata. They share the same purpose.

@@ahmadshahrul8225 She upgraded Taichi to be a main character, but there really isn't concrete goal with him like Chihaya and Arata being queen and meijin. In my opinion the reason why it focused on him was to make get over with his character so she can focus in the original 2. Plus among the 3, Taichi is the one with the most flaws/inner conflicts, given that Arata and Chihaya are rather simple, one-track minded characters. As for Arata's screentime he is supposed to be away and be mysterious I suppose, in the end his biggest turning point is getting out of his grandfather's shadow and that is just in these latest chapters.

Taichi had no chance AT ALL since Day 1. He was only a platonic friend. Arata was always the one in Chihaya's heart ever since they first met. I know a lot of people complain about Chihaya being stupid and how Taichi is SOOO much better for her, but i love how the author made it clear that that's not how things actually go. Psychologically it makes perfect sense that a character like Chihaya would be more fascinated by Arata rather than Taichi. She is a very goal driven character, and sure she is selfish, but she goes after the things she wants and constantly strives to be better at the thing she loves. She wants to be the best. And Arata is very similar in that sense, that he knows what his goal is and works hard for himself. And on the other hand, Taichi has always worked hard for Chihaya, not for himself. He's always catered for her needs and put all of his energy into her, not into himself. And while you think that those things would give him higher chances with Chihaya, they have the opposite effect for a character like her. Taichi didn't have a chance to find a thing that he loves to do for himself because he went after the thing Chihaya loves to get closer to her. We had many examples of him struggling with karuta and not enjoying it, and that's because he never wanted to work hard for it because he was inspired by it and wanted to be the best, it's because he wanted to get on the same wavelenght as Chihaya. And he was bound to quit eventually. Chihaya always looks for inspiration and Arata is just that. Somebody who has a clear goal for himself in life and that goal is very similar to her own, he makes her want to work even harder for herself. Shinobu also has a similar role as Arata in Chihayas life, but with more of a challenge in the mix. I think the direction where Taichi is headed is very good for him and i hope that he'll find something he truly enjoys doing. He's the most developed character and i'm really interested in what will happen to him. He might even have a chance with Chihaya, who knows. But he definitely took a right path for himself. The author has made such a great story so far and i don't doubt at all that the ending will be satisfactory.
And also Chihaya is a great character, she gets so much needless hate. #TeamChihaya

The thing is that Chihaya thought she loved the idea of Arata...since she saw him as a Karuta god and all but that's it...it was all Karuta she couldn't seperate the both of them....but after Taichi's leaving the club and all the incidents that followed she finally saw a world outside of Karuta and realised her true feelings for the person she wanted by her side and that's Taichi
I don't think she puts Arata on a pedestal from what we see in the anime. If Arata suddenly decided to leave karuta and go somewhere far away, Chihaya would try and find him and convince him to not quit karuta again.
Arata introduced the world of karuta to Chihaya. Yeah Taichi was always by her side but Arata gave her her everything. They both play a crazy amount of karuta because they love it so much and strive to be the best because of themselves. Taichi played karuta to be by Chihaya's side and to be closer to her. Arata and Taichi share similar goals while having opposite personalities.
Personally I do appreciate a person that tries their best to strive in an area just to be closer to me but I don't think Chihaya thinks that way

The fact that the first thing she thought to do after Taichi's confession was to recall Arata's confession and depict what he really meant by "lets play karuta together" is enough proof to determine which ship is endgame. I do feel bad for Taichi but boi simply never had a chance. He will be a better player when he's playing for himself instead of for being close to Chihaya.

Much like other people I never got to see much of Arata for the first season or two, so I kind of forgot that him and Chihaya would always have a special bond. I was originally rooting for Taichi but then I realized that he only plays karuta because he loves Chihaya. Arata and Chihaya are both very driven to achieve their goals simply because they love the game of karuta. I believe that they're perfect for each other regardless of how much screentime Arata got or how much Taichi was there to support Chihaya.

Taichi and Chihaya are endgame, canon, she has always romantically loved him and in the end of the manga confessed her love to him💓What she felt for arata was a slight crush imbued with Karuta admiration and idealization, nothing more.

Turns out she was an idiot that didn’t understand her own feelings until she lost him and she only conflated her feelings for Arata with Karuta.
Took becoming Queen and for it to be put plainly by her kouhai that she still needed/wanted Taichi beside her even without Karuta. She loved the Karuta club, but she didn’t realize til the end what she loved most about the Karuta club was Taichi.
It isn’t as if Taichi forced anything on her either, he selflessly placed himself in uncomfortable situations for his education and family life to make her dream a reality and when he couldn’t hide his feelings or pain anymore he left. Because it isn’t fair to him either.
i still havent watched this anime and based on the comments a lot are complaining about how the second lead should get the main girl, but watching this, idc about everything cause I've fallen in love with that glasses guy's accent whatever that is !!
To be honest Taichi is the main lead and Arata is the second male lead. I've never read or seen a non existent male lead in my life. Arata barely had any screen time. That's why people fell in love with Taichi, He was always around and you grew an attachment with his from the start. The anime literally started with them meeting after 3 yrs in the same high school.

Sorry this is a long rant and character study of Taichi and why he’s awesome and cool. He deserves so much more than the face him.
(Ps there will be spoilers)
I understand that Chihaya and Arata were supposed to be the ideal couple of the show, or maybe it wasn’t at this point I don’t know. I like Taichi as a character so much, he got a lot of development and it would be a waste to not reward him. At the beginning before Karuta it was clear Taichi liked Chihaya. Then for him Arata comes into the picture as an invader, and he doesn’t like him. That’s why he bullies Arata at first, Chihaya stood up for Arata which was the right decision. Then it goes on that Taichi can’t make her get rid of Arata, so he learns to accept him instead. Later Chihaya finds Taichi in the same school and they start the club. Get all the people who they need but Taichi isn’t as invested as Chihaya. Then when they go to Arata he’s more interested to get closer to her on the trip. He sees how much she cares for Arata and it makes sense but in this case it still isn’t firm evidence that she likes Arata so he keeps on trying. They eventually get to there first team match and they lose because of her. It’s ok though they still have the individual games. They get there and she plays Shinobu, she cries about it and that’s when she cries about losing. This is a sign for Taichung that he’s not as invested in something that Chihuahua likes and that’s why she’s not paying attention to him. This is when he learns to try harder in the game, for Chihaya. They watch the queen and master game and then the next season. This is all the development that leads us wanting us to know more. The next season is still about getting better at the game and they but Arata is now interested, Taichi feels invaded again this later turns into a little bit of a tension between them or at least it should I think. The fact that he feels invaded again but not doing anything is probably because he doesn’t want to be a coward again. Chihaya and Arata get closer and every time that happens Taichi feels the need to stop it. He says that he doesn’t want it to distract her but in truth it’s because he doesn’t want them to get close and it would distract him more. Slowly Taichi starts getting really good at the game and is invested just about the same if not more than Chihaya and he’s really good, but there’s no passion. He got so invested because of Chihaya, so when she’s watching he he does worse, maybe because he doesn’t truly want to be better than her or because he gets nervous. He wants to get to class A and when he does Chihaya is happy, Taichi is confused why because of the game that was happening at the moment, he was invested so if she stops being invested it would all be for nothing. When Chihaya is still looking at Arata though he feels cheated but is too much of a nice guy to notice. Taichi loses focus and he only strives to be good because he’s good and he doesn’t want his drive to be Chihaya, someone who’s not looking at her. He’s so good and then they play each other. At this point it’s all on who’s better because they each got good but Taichi was working harder than Chihaya then they face each other, Taichi needs to win this and he feels like if he wins he’ll be rewarded with a lot of happiness. He loses and he gets overcome with being the best forgetting about Chihaya. He feels no joy in it. Then he plays Arata in a game, he loses there as well but finds out the he said something to her. It made him and her flustered so he knew. He now feels more pressure to tell her. There are so many things that are similar to him and Seo because they both don’t play the game for themselves, and they both don’t enjoy it. Showing that you need to have fun with the game before devoting all your time and effort into. Later though he tells Chihaya how he feels and is rejected. He wasn’t just rejected or all the things about Chihaya he’s rejected of all the effort he put into Karuta. He doesn’t enjoy the game because Chihaya doesn’t like him. His passion was taken away.
I honestly enjoy Taichi a lot. He believes in hard work and skill. He doesn’t have faith in himself but that’s ok because he works hard so he can acompásate all the things he’s bad in. He’s awesome and want hint to end up with Chihaya. Only reason I stayed with the show and if they don’t get together in the end or at least make Taichi get something from all of this, then I will hate this show. Thank you for your time.

chihayafuru puts more emphasis on chihaya evolving as a karuta player not as a nice high school girl. when we speak of romance. i am shocked that people are fighting over something so trivial when the mc of the story is not only dumb, greedy and selfish too and after a while she never understood some small things as love at all until late with being confessed where she is acting like an idiot. most of her character development is on karuta, the rest is barely less than 10 or 20%. are we going to ignore what's important and fight over romance? yes the author has a favorite, yes taichi this, arata this, this no, that no... but really how exactly do you see chihaya in all of this?
MAJOR SPOILERS IF YOU ARE NOT UP TO DATE WITH CH 225! Very perceptive observation! Chihayafuru is entirely about one character, Chihaya. After all the entire story is a back-story bring told by Chihaya from the Maijin-Queen tournament in Tokyo where she is 18 and down 0-2 in a five game series. She opens her story in Ch 1 with the following clear statement about herself まだ情熱を知らない私 which loosely translated is "I still do not understand my own strong emotions." Does Chihaya really love the game of Karuta in the way that Arata or Shinobu do, or is her single minded devotion to Karuta a way to avoid having to come to terms with her own feelings? I think this is an open question at this point in the story. After all, after the Taichi confession, Chihaya as leader and founder of the School Karuta club, is hosting an induction ceremony for new students into the club, when she drops the mic , and runs off, chasing after Taichi. That does not seem to show a strong love of the game or devotion to her club. She wildly comes running down the street yelling "don't leave", where a young man who has just confessed could easily hear "Don't leave me" and think that his love has actually been accepted. So he goes to kiss her, and she does not respond so he honorably stops and does not force a full kiss. Chihaya is definitely being "dumb, greedy, and selfish" here!!!

For the longest time (9 years), I thought that Chihaya really did love Karuta, but after the Taichi confession, I am not so sure now. Its going to come down to what happens in this Tournament. Chihaya has to now win three in a row to become Queen. In reality, that is very difficult, but in a story, very possible. What ever the author wants.
So we will have to see where she takes us. Its been a fantastic ride so far both Manga and Anime. And I was very impressed that you saw the story as it is! where most others are hung up on Love Triangles.

The manga is about her journey, what she is learning. Of course she has flaws but so far I think we have been seeing just a big face of hers but not everything. And when it comes to romance, I always make sure I dont get swayed by it since the author chooses....
Now regarding her winning three matches, it is possible but hard. I think she hasn't found her drive to give her best fully. Maybe what she is thinking right now lies on the skills she acquired from others and her friends but her core... what is it really? That one is very deep and until she finds it winning ain't gonna be easy. But something suo dono told her about being the queen got me concerned though. Unless I am wrong. We have to see how much growth she will have to attain to keep up with the current queen

As a fan who just binged the series in a week I was rooting for Taichi the whole way as I felt that all his hard work should and will pay off in the end but I enjoy the realism that Arata will always have that special place in Chihayas heart
In my opinion, it's true that Arata is the main reason of Chihaya's dream, but Taichi is the one who strengthen Chihaya to accomplish her dream. I prefer Taichi x Chihaya...
I respect your opinon. But with Arata, he did more than give her a dream. Chihaya was pretty neglected as kid, her parents payed more attention to her sister than her. When Arata told her she had talent for karuta, he was the very first person to acknowledge her, to make her see she could make something out of herself and step back of being in her sister's shadow.

At the starting of the series.. I had hoped chihaya to end-up with arata..but after watching some episodes, I realised how hard taichi was trying in his life..like his mother was very very strict..with him in About everything... he was doing everything as his mother told him, without a question..(of course he was a bully at first,but developed himself later on..) And then after all of that, when he start following his heart about loving chihaya..he got a heartbreak... (Of course some of you might say that he didn't let chihaya to have arata's email but i think everyone will do that if they get a sense of insecurity about their love once ,I think its a kind of jealously, and jealously is common in love..)
In that sense, I think he really deserves chihaya..
And if he still got a heartbreak, then the writer shouldn't have shown us his story in such a sadistic way..instead of taichi's story the writer should have shown us arata's story.. He took arata's glasses, begs arata to not tell chihaya anything, tried to keep chihaya away from arata, tried to cut arata off, and ends up running away from kurata. You think someone like this deserves better? Arata respected their space when he thought that chihaya and taichi were dating, he wanted to keep their friendship, he got over his own grief over the loss of his grandpa for taichi and chihaya, he wanted to keep their kurata, and he just wanted to have a team who he can enjoy kurata with. If anything, arata deserves to have a better friend.

Just wanna put my comment here from a reply I did months ago because I wanna share my opinion regarding the story's romance and why I felt like Taichi and Chihaya ending up together made sense.
"i know it’s been a year but just wanna comment that her “180” is kinda realistic imo. Dont forget they are teenagers who easily fall in love. It is very common how you don’t end up with your first crush just because you realize at the end how the foundation of your love was very weak in the first place. Chihaya fell easily for Arata just because she admired his Karuta, and she felt intense feelings when he confessed to her. However with Taichi, her bond with him is much stronger because of what they’ve been through together, and even when Arata is there, she can’t help but feel hurt and lonely when Taichi left. It was very clear in the story how they portrayed the dynamic of their relationship - Arata is the one she admired, while Taichi was the one she cannot live without."

Well, you can say that happened to Chihaya after Arata had to leave when they were kids.
Chihaya is fond of Arata from the very beginning. She admired him so much and obviously liked Arata. However, its kinda empty. Arata only realised that he likes her when she was already good in Karuta, in her winning season.
But Taichi likes her since childhood. He's always there for Chihaya, in winning and losing season. There's a bond between them that goes beyond friendship. They are a perfect match.
But Arata and Chihaya is good match too. Like what the heck I love the three of them, its really hard to make predictions. Whether you want her to end up with Arata or Taichi, you simply cannot hate the other.

but seriously I only watched the anime for the Karuta tournaments/fights.
I have no interest in their love life.
If I have to choose then it should be Arata and Chihaya.
Taichi is kinda irritating.
I like Taichi, he is the type of character you would like to improve the most. BUT I want Chihaya and Arata to end up together! They both love Karuta so much (and the way Arata calls Chihaya's name is wholesome), I can even see them teaching their kids how to play Karuta in the future.
As for Taichi, he's just not into Karuta that much.. I guess he came to love it in the process of chasing Chihaya. I've seen Chihaya and Arata, smiling and having fun playing their opponents but I've never seen that kind of smile in Taichi's face. That's why he needs to be broken so he can find his own strength,his own dream, with or without Chihaya, he must grow.

Everyone here talking about couples and shit. I'm over here wanting them all to be together (not romantically). I think they all need each other. Arata needs them to get past his grandfather's death, break his notions on team play, even help him figure what his style of karuta is. Chihaya needs an exemplar to follow in Arata (even if it's her idea of him), and Taichi to help towards them. Taichi needs Chihaya to help him break out of thinking for himself, and Arata to push him out of his cowardice.
About chihaya being so inloved with arata is because he made her realized her dream, what she wants to do and to be and that just feels different.
Taichi? Arata? Look, I'm just pissed only 21 volumes have been translated officially into English, out of 44. And I've never liked fan translations.
Also. I'd classify this more as dumbstruck, than lovestruck. It's a first for her, she's processing the confession and doesn't know what to make of it. She keeps replaying the event, she did this too with Taichi oddly enough. Later clips I would classify more as accepting of his (Arata's) feelings since she blushes. It will be interesting to see how the relationship gets fleshed out with Chihaya getting more character growth. Cause her feelings for Arata are also synonymous with karuta. A functional relationship, one connection doesn't make. So as she gets ready at some point to become a high school teacher, and she has to become more aware of the needs of her students and teacher faculty alike, how that will shape her and her feelings towards everything will be *really* fascinating to see! She's still young, plenty of room and time to grow as a person!
I like Arata but I thought she will end up with Taichi 😓 ... Well they shouldn’t have made us love Taichi so much if they wanted us to accept this ship easily 🤦🏽♀️

Why Arata is the MC tho? His personality and character as a whole is so lame and boring. It would be better if Taichi was the MC. He has the looks, personality and charisma. What the heck! I’m glad I stopped watching after knowing Chihaya and Taichi were not the MCs. 😪🥱

Its easy to misconstrue the love you feel for your best friend as romantic love. I did, and it never ends well. You will always love them, but its different than what you feel for the person you want to spend the rest of your life with. I didn't want to lose his friendship, but it was never meant to be romantic. I totally understand Chihaya's dilemma.
