from the 1978 movie " Same Time Next Year " directed by Robert Mulligan
starring Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn.
song written by prolific songwriting team of Alan and Marilyn Bergman
my wife loved this song ... until we watched the movie. - Krátké a kreslené filmy
For me, the beauty of the movie was two people carving out a small but valuable place in each other's lives and rising above the judgments that would have prevented this. Was it right? Was it wrong? That's really not relevant when you understand that people are unto themselves just people, with fears, hopes, disappointments and needs of their own. It is an existentially beautiful love story that continues to touch me even after 40 years.
I understand every word you are saying
60 years ago, I was a happily married man. I wasn't looking for anyone else. Then I fell hopelessly in love with a woman who had a fiancé It was gradual and unexpected. For almost a year we were hopelessly in love. I still loved my wife and she loved her partner so we parted.. To date I still think about her and the futility of the arrangement. The movies montages are like my life passing before my eyes. I never regret that love and will always think of it as one of the happiest and saddest times of my life at the same time
For me, it truly started in 1978 with “hello,” when our hands touched - and have never let go. This movie means so much to me - the first time I saw it touched my heart. It was our story.
A film that stays with you for life. It's not a true story. But there is endless truth in the story.
One of the best movies ever!
Our son was killed in a car accident, March 24th 2008. I cry every time I watch this movie or listen to this song. It reminds me of him. There's something very wrong about having to bury one of your children. RIP Marc.
In the event you hated Alan Alda all those years on M*A*S*H, you're probably going to like him in this classic. And you'll probably going to fall in love with Ellen Burstyn. This is truly a wonderfully unforgettable movie.
Best smile on film ever : Ellen Burstyn's smile.
Where can i find this movie
One of my all time favorites, song and movie
I adore Alan Alda. He is a masterpiece of an Actor and a unique and sweet Human Being

Had this song played at my wedding.
If your a little older, and come a few miles down life's road, perhaps you can feel the connection to this wonderful film. It is one of my favorites and I try to view it every year..it never gets old. Of course, Johnny Mathis with Jane Olivor just puts the frosting on the cake.

Now 78 but this still tugs at my heart and brings a tear..... I lived this, for twenty five years....and now only memories.
The only reason I watched this movie 35 years ago was because I was in bed weak from the flu and couldn't find the remote control to change the channel. I LOVED IT.
Love doesn't come to everyone. Some people live a lifetime and never find it. But...I hope everyone who hears this song will find it like I have.
+Andrew Dotson I found true love and since my husband's death a year ago, I know everyday just how truly lucky I was. Yes, I have been told by many that I was blessed, as many never find their best friends, never find their best love. He died far too young, but I am so grateful for the time we had together. I am so glad you found that special love and I wish you continued happiness and joyful times with the love of your life.
For some of us, love came at the wrong place in time. Sadly.

My wife and I go back to the same hotel we had our rondayv. 36 married years. 👍

Just in case you ever find yourself listening to this song...
Thank you...
...the last time I fell in love was when I fell in love with you...
...and that's the last time I ever fell in love...
Always and forever...
My Mother adored this movie and we would both watch it together and cry and I told her I wanted a love like this, I believe she had these kind of loves even though she was married, she never cheated but every man that met her fell in love with her, so I dedicate this to you my beautiful Mother Eda, I Hope to see you soon because there is not one day that goes by that I miss you, however you are always in my dreams, so until God brings us together I will honor your memory, Love, Michele.
Thank God for feeling like this for 37 years...
Perfect song, perfect actors, perfect movie!!!
I love the movie and song. Someone may not like the movie due because it romances adultery lol. I get it, but the music throughout the movie really helped me to fall in love with this movie.
Sometimes you can't choose who you fall in love with.
Their voices are like melting butter. So delicious to listen to.
One of the best songs from one of the best movies of all time and neither get's much credit.
When I conducted a 45 minute phone interview with Mr. Mathis about 13-years-ago , I made a point of mentioning this song and how exquisite & memorable it was. After pausing a beat to bring the song forward in his memory.....the then 74-year-old vocal legend actually began singing the chorus-it taking everything in me to not burst into tears from the honor.

@Gioia Patton I'm crying just reading this
@@gioiapatton4136 Such a rare gift. You are lucky.

Where to start ? Every time I hear this song or think about this movie, instantly it's 1986 again. I was 20 years old and head over heels in love with a girl from high school. We weren't really close in HS, but we met at a New Years Eve party in college with mutual friends and instantly connected. One cold winter evening about a month into our relationship, she came by with this movie in hand, rented from a local video store (and yes, it was on VHS). We watched it, and I didn't know what to expect. It seemed like a "girly flick" but I soon found myself looking into her eyes, holding her tightly, and soon we were sobbing together, I was falling in love as the credits rolled ! We were together for 4 wonderful years but sadly drifted apart. I can't explain what happens to me when this song plays, but it stirs something deep inside my soul. I have been married for 29 years with 4 wonderful sons, I sometimes feel guilty for feeling like this, but it's something I just can't control. Well... I've rambled on about this long enough, and I'm not sure why, I guess it's a way to cope ! If anyone reads this comment, please accept my apology for letting it get so wordy, but thanks for indulging me in my stroll down, loves memory lane!
What a wonderful story to remember ! You are lucky enough to have this memories !
Jane Oliver and Jonny Mathis...great
I not only love this ballad, I also love the movie. Anyone that wants to get a glimpse of growing up a baby boomer should see the movie. Throughout the movie are pictures of meaningful events that impacted all of us. That is part of why it touches so many people. Infidelity was quite common among my parents generation. I think if that is all you hear and see, you missed a lot of the movie.
Adultery is far greater in the susequent generations. The baby boomers just propagated it.
Jon Jon saluting. I wept.
Same here this is a movie you can watch over and over and have lol.
if you can feel this way in your lifetime don't miss the chance...
I fell in love at 35,000 feet and continued to have a 20 year love affair very much like this movie.
My mom forced me to sit down & watch this movie when I was probably 14? And I'm so glad she did. I'm 42 now & it's still one of my all time favorites & when Im really missing her I listen to it. Thank you Mom 💖💕💞💖
Good Mom 🙂
2 years to late, but very sweet honey..

@@January. Thank you teacher. Is there anything else you would like to teach me??
I believe in love/chemistry at first sight!!!
The play was a very clever encapsulation of American history over 25 years, but also a brilliant script, funny, sad, shocking, but most of all a romantic story, the two characters giving their saved -up best to each other each year, until suddenly one needs help from the other. It's a story full of hope and love, and a way to find a different way through the difficulties of life. The film was so well done, and the accompanying music every bit as good as the rest.
My confession....I didn't see this movie nor had I ever heard of it. One day, I had 'All My Children' on as I was puttering around the house. All the sudden I heard this song come on as they were using it for some scene to set the mood. I instantly recognized Jane's voice and watched the end credits to see what was listed. Went out, bought the sound track and have been listening to it ever since. What a duo and what a song. Pure schmatlz and I love it.
one of my favorite movies ever.
For those of you who did not see "ST, NY" in the theaters, there were special nostalgic stills (blended with the Mathis-Olivor duet) from the various periods showing Ike, JFK, movie stars, etc. to reflect the passage of time in the film. Very effective.
Although I have loved this song for decades, I didn't watch this movie until about a year ago. I wanted to like it, but it is simply glorifying the very thing that breaks up couples and rips apart families. Makes me so, so sad.
What a beautiful love song, perfect rendition by Johnny Mathis and Jane Olivor. Their voices are angelic and golden.I never get tired listening to it over and over again. The movie is also one of the best ever.
What's not to love? Alan Alda, Ellen Burstyn, and Johnny Mathis and Jane The Olivor? The movie is a true love story, and beyond that, a tribute to how music can make the movie. Thanks for posting this.
Sadly an evening at the cinema now is just space creatures and comic books for audiences of 11 years of age..........................
Remember spending a joyous evening at the York Cinema in Toronto seeing this.....................
You know that love lasts forever!! Time stands still for a love like that, its a feeling you only know once in your entire life!! I will never fall in love again.... its always you!
Grateful that I found this on DVD for sale back 5 years ago for $1.00. Love this movie and song. When it first came out I was too young to understand but now that I'm almost 50 I wish I could find my one true love.
I've loved this songs since I first heard it more than 40 years ago the film and song are to this day absolutely beautiful.
Love the idea of this movie but in reality..............
just finished watching the movie - for the 157th time
and it still chokes me up.

I love this movie. It still makes me cry several decades after seeing it for the first time! One of my all time favorites!
I'm trying to remember what happens after her baby is born there in their room. Did they stay together? Divorce their spouses? Or did they stay together or separate?
They kept seeing every year until they grew old, i love this movie

I love this movie. And this song is so beautiful. My mother always loved Johnny Mathis and before she passed she started listening to Jan Olivor too. She became one of her favorites.
How could anyone not like Alan Alda???? But I am female. He was
the best at playing Hawkeye, and this is my fav movie. My God, he is so beautiful and wonderfully alive.
I love him. ♥️😊♥️
“If I knew you were coming I’d of baked a cake.” Lol
This song was PURE BRILLIANCE. The extra lyrics played throughout the film scene changes were also beautiful.
So true. Especially the late 60's portion. Robert Kennedy etc... "Dreams make promises they can't keep. They can swindle you while you sleep. And the morning finds you wondering why."

Sometimes... just sometimes... Life imitates art.
I won’t ever consider the 10 years of ‘Same Time, Next Year’ as a regret..although I will never truly be the same. My heart hurts so much, but I know I’m on the right path.
What a wondeful yet very tough movie. Little did we know that the world would see far more of these issues going forward. Relationships are tough.
some older movies lose their pazzazz BUT this one AND the theme song still gets to me. i cry whenever i watch it !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Adultery is SO romantic!
Sure, it makes your eyes all watery, and maybe the words create a lump in your throat, but isn't it all worth it ? The way this vid makes your heart a bit bigger, isn't it worth some breathless tears?
This movie makes me miss my mom.

BTW, everytime i see this movie i cry broken hearted.... it will always have that effect on me... its funny as a kid this movie was so moving to me.. then real love real life came around and I completely understood....

Absolutely beautiful song, and a very good movie. Back when showbiz and singers had talent.
I love the recording... and... oh yes, the film!!
One of my favorite movies & one of my favorite songs. Each gives me a lump in my throat & tears in my eyes. ♥♥ And nobody could sing this like Johnny Mathis & Jane Olivor.
I never get tired listening to this beautiful song. It always bring back fond memories of college life. Thank you Johnny and Jane.....
Jane Olivor never got the recognition she should have. Few have ever had a voice like her's.
+BaahBen --I've been a Jane Olivor fan for 30 years. I agree with you. I don't understand why she didn't become more well-known. She's an incredible talent.
+BaahBen I agree, i love this song!
My mom and dad both loved Jane Olivor back in the 80's, so I grew up listening to her. Her voice is so unique!
She could have however. She chose to walk away from the music industry when she was approaching the top. Very sad! I agree, one of the most gifted singers ever to have come down the pike.

Allen Alda... I never realized what a fine actor you are. Yes, I said "are." and the last time I felt like this... was back in Armarna, Egypt, or was it Rome... at Caligula's birthday party? . He kept yelling, "Let the Christians light up the place ." So he set them unfire... and the party only got more resplendent. Talk about "glitter,"
A gem of a movie
Jane Olivor's voice has always been such a magnificent instrument. I have always admired her musicianship - Just outstanding. Really, she is one of our American treasures.

Solomon says,
“Do not lust in your heart after her beauty
or let her captivate you with her eyes. . . .
Another man’s wife preys on your very life.
Can a man scoop fire into his lap
without his clothes being burned?
Can a man walk on hot coals
without his feet being scorched?
So is he who sleeps with another man’s wife;
no one who touches her will go unpunished” (verses 25-29)

I'm not sure I could handle a relationship like that only seeing someone I loved for 2 to 3 days a year. Hard enough communicating with past girlfriends occasionally on social media.these days.
Wonderful Movie, wonderful song...
The time period covered by this movie ends where my "Same Time Next Year" love affair began. It lasted 25 years. Ended 18 years ago.
I saw the movie first and have loved both since, after many years and many viewings.
Thank God for Love Stories......
I have to see this again one of these day
I saw this with my old boyfriend- I haven't seen him or talked to him in 40 years and recently found out he is very sick. I just wanted to walk down memory lane. Beautiful song and time.
Great movie and a fantastic theme song. Johnny Mathis has such an emotional voice.
Johnny Mathis is responsible for ALL singers that put out a "Greatest Hits" album!!!!!!!! He owed the record company an album back in the 1950's and had nothing - so he compiled a group of his best selling hits and released it as a "Hits" album!!!!!! It was an instant Number 1 Album!!!!!! It was the very first "Greatest Hits" album!!!!! Now - they all do it!!!!!! Keep hitting them long and straight, Mr. Mathis!!!!!!
I love this movie, most of all, i love the song.
Beautiful song and a very cute movie.
I could watch this and listen to this over and over. Thankyou.
