How NOT To Spoon Dirt Bike Tires.. *Rage Warning*

  • This is one skill every motorcycle owner should have in my opinion. It is more of an art and I am not Picasso, I have changed probably 6 or so tires using this method and let me tell ya these small ones haven't gotten easier. It seems that the smaller the tire is, the stiffer it is, and after reflecting on this specific tire change on my 2012 KLX110L I would have definitely used a third or even fourth spoon.
Getting that last part of the bead to stretch over the rim is always the hardest and I am sure there are some CZcams experts out there who have the answers so please leave a comment down below!

There is no rage worse than putting everything back together just to realize you popped the tube 😂 the way I do it is wrapping the end of flathead screwdrivers with duct tape, works good and keeps the jagged edge from popping them. I also use wd-40 instead of soap

I have changed many many many z125 tires and when you figure out how to use your knees to hold the tire opposite your spoons. So you will be kneeling on one side and spoons on other . That keeps the tire off the bead in center of rim. Then you will be zipping tires on off easy. Great video

I legitimately haven't laughed this hard watching a video in a long time. You took that a hell of a lot better than I would have. That little pizza wheel would have been tossed out that garage door or I'd have thrown it into the stove. I'd say 3-4 spoons at least and dude, as they say, time is money so look at a stand at least and maybe a changing machine if you plan on doing this regularly. For lube I usually use Armourall or WD-40.

    • @Ricqu

You need to put the tire on the ground and use your knees to push the bead towards the center of the rim on the opposite side that you are working your spoons. If you use this technique it makes taking the tire off and putting on much easier on your knuckles. Ok, I commented before the video was over and towards the end of the video you said you know about centering the bead opposite the the spooning but you didn't do it so....????

biggest factor is breaking the bead and consistently making sure both sides of the bead are sitting in the middle of the rim where there is more room, its neigh impossible to remove a tyre whilst the beads are sitting up against the rim walls

Bead buddy along with the Baja no pinch tool will make this job so much easier. You will never go back to using spoons for the install after using that tool... When removing the tire stick 3 or 4 irons in at once about 4" apart, pry the middle ones first, then the outside. This is the easiest way to get started removing the tire.

He can explain it a lot better than me, but definitely get 3-4 good 13.5" motion pro spoons and a bead buddy. If you have a bearing press in your shop, put down the spoons. Use the ram on your press to press your tire on after putting it on as far as you can by hand. Just work it around 2 to 3 inches at a time. This saves damage to your rim also. I have a bearing press from H.F. 😎

I have the same set of motion pro tire irons. They are ok and pack nicely, but if you try and do anything other than a basic tube type with them I always manage to find a way to destroy the tire because they are too small to get enough of a bite without destroying the bead. The actual "spoon" shaped ones seem a lot better.
