  • Beginners washboard!
    Something we get asked constantly is how and why Jack adds all the accruements that he does to his Washboard.
    This video takes us through this and will be of interest to new scrubbers and seasoned players.
    A three part series of lessons follow this on our channel.

    This is fascinating! Thanks for taking the time to explain it all - I always wondered how you put it together.
    Keep up the great playing you two!

      InstrumentManiac Thanks for the comment. We get asked this on almost every gig we do so it’s great to share this as it seems to mystify some good folks. We hope it opens some eyes to the possibilities as everyone that plays Washboard should have their own particular setup. 🎯

    Thanks for keeping this artwork alive... I've recently started using a washboard in my authentic historical music. I use bottle caps bent around my fingers, (wrapped inside with masking tape on my fingertips).

    I have monted thimbles on to thin workmans gloves (with rubber palms). I cut the finger tips off used Gorilla glue smeared on the inside of the tips, put the thimbles on ran them under the tap, put the gloves on & used elasstic bends until the glue had nearly set. I fid they work very well

      David Wozencroft this sounds fantastic! Our pal José does similar and it works really well especially for quick swaps between Washboard and Drums on gigs!

    Tnx for your insights. Diverting from my usual drum kit I'm asked to play washboard at a one time gig in a couple of weeks. So I'm setting things up from scratchm and this video certainly helps a lot!

    Thank you so much for this insight into 'ways and means'. Like you I have metal fatigue in my original board and now swopping the bits onto a spare board. Plenty of time then to practice,
    my Uke group keep in touch via Zoom, not ideal but better than nothing.

      John Smith That’s a good sign if you’re wearing through them. Means you’re playing loads! Weird times but means we can work on stuff apart and bring it together when Covid goes. ❤️

    I was buying a Stumpf fiddle from some local guy and he threw in a washboard! One of those Sunnyland ones. Yay, me.

    Very helpful, but could you, please, do a follow-up and cover some more
    ground? What should I look for when buying a washboard? What ist he difference
    between ‚real‘ washboards and ‚musical‘ washboards (apart from the percussive
    add-ons)? Which metals and which wood-types sound best? Etc. etc.

    • @TheWashboardResonators
      @TheWashboardResonators  Před 4 lety

      Odysseus Laertiades We feel that is down to the individual with use of trial and error to find what works for you. We see people use very small to much larger ones in all material types. Some with no attachments and some with many more than us. All players develop their own sound and if they’re any good should always be looking to experiment and refine their sound. We’d recommend a genuine old one in zinc or brass or the ones made in Argentina by ‘Cincinnati Washboards.’ In both cases you’ll get lasting quality and a great place to start from. Beyond that it’s your chance to develop something unique.

      Go back through the videos and you’ll see a video explaining what is on the washboard and why.
      Learn basics first and add effects to your taste.
      Good luck.

    Hi, I'm just starting to set up my first washboard and wanted to be clear on what you've said: You've used rubber and felt gaskets as spacers between the washboard and your percussion add-ons? These little details can make quite a difference in the sound - and are very much appreciated! Any other mounting suggestions?

  • @misslace112

    • @TheWashboardResonators
      @TheWashboardResonators  Před 4 lety

      We’re releasing a three part lesson series over the coming weeks. The Washboard was self taught but having studied jazz drums for years the patterns are adapted from snare patterns / rudiments and drum fills to fit the Washboard. In a few weeks the videos will all be up. You can contact jackamblindrums@gmail.com to discuss a Skype lesson too!

  • @blursedhappyminds1398

    Eventually, im going to be playing the washboard, sounds really cool to play and adding more things to it makes it even better! I also have a question, was it difficult playing the washboard, because if so, what was it?

    • @TheWashboardResonators
      @TheWashboardResonators  Před 4 lety +1

      Blursed Knight The more you add the more you can develop your own sound. It’s as easy or as difficult as you make it. Listening to great players is a good place to start then knowing some snare drum patterns you can translate will help hugely. We’ll be releasing a three part lesson series in the coming weeks. 🎯
