While it's great that you used the Gladiator plot for Commodus as it glorifies Rome (as all history should), I can't help but feel that there was a missed opportunity in that the actual way Commodus died is even more fucking hilarious. Basically, every week, he would write a list of whoever he wanted executed; this would go something like "My best friend, his children, and anyone who sold them wheat in the last six weeks". And then he would just leave these notes lying around the house, for the assassins to pick up later.
One day his wife came home to find a massive list just lying on Commodus' desk... at the very top of which was *her* name. Obviously, she freaked the fuck out and screamed "OH FUCK!", immediately showing the note to everyone else who was on the list, to which they all screamed "OH FUCK!" and agreed to murder Commodus together. Can't remember the specifics, but I'm pretty sure they choked him to death in a bathtub like the pathetic sack of shit he was.

The conspirators convinced Commodus' trainer to kill him by telling him about how Commodus impaired his gladitorial opponents (drugged them, gave them blunt swords, etc.)
The assassination probably happened in a bathhouse. Roman baths were basically indoor heated swimming pools.

In petronius's Satiricon the protagonist is constantlly harassed by the roman elite, and literaly raped in a religious ceremony. He also witnesses minors having sex. The work wasn't written in the horrifying tones that modern novels often apply to fictional material that is grotesque, as to adress its natural rejectability. It was written in good comical and poetical lines. I assume that the romans very commonly did things similar, covetly and in the open. The only humiliatory aspect of it was reserved to the victim, or willfull receiver(for them it must have been things alike) as the comical side of Caesar's "Bythinian queen" will show.

Yeah, but as a consequence, what was left of the empire would splinter into 3: Despotate of Epirus; Empire of Nicaea; Empire of Trebizond. Epirus was the first to attempt an imperial restoration, but also by far the earliest of the three to fall. Nicaea was next who made an attempt at imperial restoration, and, unlike Epirus, was successful, with the restored Eastern Roman Empire surviving until the fateful year of 1453. Yet this was not the end. The Despotate of Morea would numerous times secede and then re-integrate into the main empire, but would in either case be Roman. It fell some years after the fall of Constantinople. Finally, the Empire of Trebizond managed to survive for a long-ass time due to savvy diplomacy and favourable geography, ruled by a cadet branch of the Komnenoi family (yes, those same Komnenoi who brought the empire back from the brink of the destruction in the late 11th and early 12th century). But, the Ottomans under Mehmet II the Conqueror proved to much for all remaining Romans, even for Trebizond. The last remnant of the empire would fall with the capture of the city of Trebizond in 1461.
And thus, the fire of Rome was snuffed out for good.
There once was a dream. A dream called Rome.
