  • Frau has so so many gems on her dress so I thought it would be fun to make a video showing how I cast and decorate my resin gems! This video covers the whole process from making a silicone mold, to pouring and coloring resin, to painting the gems to make them sparkly and finally beading them and attaching them to the skirt. I used Smooth-On Oomoo 30 and Art Resin as my mold making and casting materials and they're super easy to work with!

    It looks so pretty! The number of different skills you've pulled from throughout this project really brings home the complexity of garment making, especially for fancy stuff. Any one of those skills (patterning, staymaking, sewing, embroidery, beading, and now jewelry making) is its own whole specialized trade, and here you are doing all of it!

    One thing for mold making you can do is use a sheet of transfer tape laid flat to stick whatever you’re molding to. Then make walls with what ever you like. I like to use cookie cutters cause it makes cute shapes.. but doing molds this way you can keep what you molded from. And the transfer tape just peels off with no issues. 😊

    All resin will yellow eventually. Some resins take longer than others due to having UV inhibitors added into the formula. Coating the finished pieces with a uv protectant layer can also help. Color can hide the yellowing but that is dependent on the specific colors used. Clear resins, lighter colors, and whites are more likely to show yellowing while darker opaque colors are more likely to hide the yellowing.
    While the yellowing will affect the color the purple gems turning grey may actually be due to using alcohol inks. Alcohol inks in general aren't always very color fast and purples are among some of the worst for fading and color shifting.
    Resin casting and mold making can be so fussy but totally worth it in the end.

    • @moth.faerie
      @moth.faerie  Před 2 lety

      aah that's all good to know! how disappointing that all resin yellows 😅 i keep my resin in a tupperware that stays in a cabinet so it doesnt see any daylight but I guess the color shift is just inevitable

  • @yokoboo
    @yokoboo Před 2 lety

    You might have better luck finding what you need by searching square or rhombus faceted resin molds on etsy? Depending on how square the diamonds are in the reference pic- at least... when I searched under those terms on etsy I found a few square/rectangle/rhombus shaped faceted molds. Also if you want to sew the jewels to the dress without going through the beads, you can use the felt backing and a curved needle (I used to use one in book binding all the time, it might be useful here). But given that the lace is already attached to the dress, that would probably be more effort than it's worth. Either way it's looking amazing and beautiful :3

    It’s my understanding that all resin yellows - Peter Brown has a video on his YT channel where he goes through all the different types of resins he’s used over the years and shows how they’ve aged. In short, all resins yellow, and the thicker the pour the more the yellowing effect, but some brands will yellow slower than others

    • @KaloCheyna
      @KaloCheyna Před 2 lety +1

    The magpie part of my soul is like “yes, we must learn this skill and add MORE shiny stuff to our life!” While the responsible adult human part of my soul is like “girl…please remember that you are messy with things that are not sticky…please say no to this form of shiny creation…”

      ah haha it's definitely very messy, but it's not too bad if you lay down paper or something to catch all the drips!

      @@moth.faerie I would love to say that would solve my issues…but…my attention span is short and my history with adhesives (and even things that are not technically adhesive…but if a perfect storm occurs could act like one) is embarrassingly filled with ruined clothes, furniture, carpet, dishes…and has required assistance to remove from places on my person I STILL swear I did not go near it with. However, I love peyote stitching so…perhaps I can just get the gems I want and then go from there :) it is pretty awesome looking…I thank you for showing me (and the rest of the internet) how it works!

    Unfortunately all resin’s yellow over time. The length of time that this takes will vary greatly though & if you store them away from sunlight (or any strong light really) it should slow the process down.

    Thank you for the distraction. Badly needed these days, I'm afraid. Hello from Centretown/downtown Ottawa. We are literally surrounded by Nazi and 'confederate' flag, um, enthusiasts. Hate crimes have done a huge spike since this started. We got a detective assigned to Steve's case, so, that's a kind of progress. He was physically assaulted by a guy with no mask when he was coming home from his work at the city Chaplaincy (he's an Anglican/Episcopalian Vocational Deacon). Got a piece of rock salt in his eye and a shiner. Neighbours have been attacked, harassed and followed. 'Protesters' are in the heart of our Rainbow District. They have Centretown chopped into a maze - major and minor intersections are completely blocked. The choice is to walk in the street. In which case, cars will speed up when they see you. Or you have to pass through the trucks and hope for the best. Police do nothing. They even let the 'protesters' walk off with the fence that was surrounding the Cenotaph and the Tomb of the Unknown Solider. No one know why they need a fence. But they've got one now...

      ugh that sounds horrible, i hope they leave you alone soon! i truly don't understand why people can't just wear a mask and make literally the smallest sacrifice for the benefit of other people

      @@moth.faerie There are the people who flock to Wellington Street for the weekend party / rave / hot tubs / saunas / bouncy castles / jumbotron TV / BBQ's / food tents and fire pits. They bring their little, little kids and play tourist.
      Then there are the people actually running this thing. Their manifesto originally called for government to government negotiations. In which the elected government would be put on trial for treason. And the "protesters" would renegotiate the constitution with the Governor General and the Senate. The truckers would form, somehow, the acting government until the next (yeah right) election. Your basic Handmaid's Tale playbook.
      They've sworn in their own police force. They think they have the right to detain people.
      The organizers have 2 (count 'em two) former RCMP who used to work the security and sniper detail for the Prime Minister. The RCMP are a hybrid of your State Police, the FBI and a national police force. This "protest" is very well funded. And very well organized. This is more coherent than any Canada Day celebration I've ever seen. Their multiple food tents alone are a logistical feat. American militia members are scattered through the crowd.
      I hope it ends soon. The city is a tinderbox.

    Where are your gloves and respirator??? Resin is TOXIC, PPE is ESSENTIAL. Also, resin fumes are heavier than air and sink to the floor. This can make surfaces toxic for your cat.

      This is the second comment I’ve gotten about the respirator and I’m honestly confused why you all think I’m not wearing one since you can’t see my face??? As for my cat I pour my resin then we both leave my studio and I shut the door until the next day. She gets maybe 5 minutes of exposure, plus she spends most of the time on the other side of my 22’ long room.
