  • Heyyyy my lovelies, I am so so excited to bring you this video. When I made my Air Dry Clay Gnomes I knew that I was making them with the goal to Make a Silicone Mould of them soon after. I had no idea if we could make a silicone mould from Air Dry Clay. However, I knew I wanted to try and bring you with me. I made these Air Dry Clay Gnomes a couple videos back and you can watch it here:
    • Air Dry Clay DIY Gnome...
Now that we know this works. Imagine the posibilities ! Just imagine what you can create out of clay and then mould it to be able to make duplicates for a long time to come. I am already thinking trays and small little trinket dishes. it would be so amazing.
I am making a silicone mould of these air dry clay Gnomes using 1:1 Silicone compound. It has no smell and is non-toxic. I have linked the silicone here in my Amazon Storefront. There is a whole section on Making Silicone moulds.

Tip - whenever you are trimming silicone molds or have a 'failure' mold, keep the cut up pieces and use them in the big spaces in new molds.

Came here to say this. Keep waste bits for padding your next mould. Makes no difference how old the bits are that aren't close to the model that you're moulding from. Happy creating, everyone!

So fun and great turnout. Here’s a tip that I now do instead of making boxes. I use leftover plastic food containers from the supermarket - the right length and width and just fill as much as I need. Saves so much time and obviously no worries about leaking. They come out like a dream. ❤️

Heyyyyy Jules .. thank you so much !! • @vincentferrari
    @vincentferrari Před 2 lety +19

The only thing you have to be super careful about when you're making molds like this from a resin or a clay original is that the resin or clay is sulfur free (most air dry clay is, not all polymer clay is). If there's sulfur in the original it will inhibit the curing of the silicone and you'll end up with an uncured layer of wet silicone where it touches the original. You can get around that by spraying a sealant of some kind on the air dry clay (which you did when you painted it so you won't have that problem in this case) but it's just something to be aware of :)
I loved how simple you made this look. Great video!

    • @vincentferrari

@@Sereinslimebar any spray sealer should be sufficient really. I’d go with the krylon clear top coat stuff just because it dries really fast but it might take some experimentation to see what works with your specific clay.

Loved the video Iv used mould mixing paste together but not keen on it so I will try this. The container you used isn’t the same I take it that you had, had it sometime. I have a Christmas ball ornament that I would like to make a mold of the top. The only thing is the top won’t come off! I haven’t ever made a mold before so I could really use your creativity here!
I’m wondering #1. how to make it a little taller so that it will fit the tops of my clear glass ball tops because they are taller than this one?
#2. How to keep the holes in it so I can still put a hanger in it?
#3. How do I keep the silicone from seeping into the holes where the hanger goes?
Girl I wish you were here to help me! I’m older than you and I just can’t figure it out? I wish I could send you a picture? Thank you for listening! Tami

Sorry Claire I can't help with this, I've never used a mould release spray when making moulds. I find that I don't have a problem making moulds from clay as long as I put gloss varnish on it first.

Cleaning molds out after using Resin release spray:
Pour alittle of ethanol alcohol into your mold, wipe clean with a piece of cotton wool or a q-tip & rinse with soap & water.

Mix castor oil with 99% rubbing alcohol and you have a mold release the ratio around 85% alcohol and 15% castor oil

Hello! Was your air dry clay sealed with waterproofing before spraying with silicone spray?

To save on silicon, you can cut off the pieces you do not need, chop them up and use them as a filler in the next project. :-)

    Seeking advice:
I had to say goodbye to my sweet perfect best friend at the emergency vet over the weekend. 😭 I made a print of his paw in some airdry clay because it was all i could get to work with. Since i was blubbering and in shock it didnt turn out perfect. Now, 2 days later, Im researching how to make a mould from that imprint, so i can make memorials for my adult kids, because they loved him, too. I dont know where to begin. I cant ruin the impression because I font have another. Any advice?

  • @Red_Queens_Jubilee_Club

Fanfuckingtastic! You did a great job from beginning to end on the mould. I’m really impressed by this. Would it be easier to demould if immediately after pouring you could remove the area that is cut away for a string? It could then be recut after pouring. I’m just spitballing trying to think of a way to make it easier to demould. I used to pour ceramics and clay isn’t the most forgiving material either. I got the booster shot for the COVID Vaccine today. I never got the welcome aboard package after the 2nd shot. I hope I get it this time. A quasi friend lied and got an extra dose thinking it would have like the booster. That was in June. Now he’s going through gender reassignment procedures.
