- The last of my Drivin n Cryin videos. On this night, Operation Desert Storm was launched to begin the Gulf War. Kevn had something to say about that and it was also reflected in the set list. This sat on the shelf for 31 years before I finally cut it. Good thing I got the master tape digitized before the digi-betacam tape deck died. There were two vhs camcorders as well as the ENG camera at the back. Great sound from a board feed. Rick Richards from the Georgia Satellites guests on Statesboro Blues and Syllables. I saw these guys at Auburn University in 1989. I didnt know them at the time, but I bought Mystery Road a few days later.
I still remember the first time I saw them. Who is this guy who stole the bass player and drummer from my favorite local band? (The Nightporters) Needless to say I was astounded....
Going to college in Tuscaloosa, AL between 1986 and 1991 was a real musical treat. I saw the complete evolution of D&C, from frat party basements as a trio to headlining large shows at Birmingham's Sloss Furnace and the Cotton Club in Atlanta. They always played their asses off...

Stand Up, Scarred, Honeysuckle, Straight to Hell... such great great songs. As a writer, Kev'n is one of the best of his generation.

I was there! I think I went to every concert they performed until I moved away in 1998. I grew up in Athens, GA. The music scene in the 70s, 80s and 90s was awesome.

Me and my cousin found this big phone book for Atlanta at our local library one day. That night we got fucked up and called Kevn. We got his answering machine..😢
This is so good! I saw them open for the Church in Germany when I was in the Army, that would have been 1988, Frankfurt Batchkopf Club. And then again at the Whiskey in Hollywood on this tour. One of the best live shows.
I've been a fan since first hearing them. Kevin Kinney is an excellent song writer IMO. Great live band!
The Truth!!!! Every single night, DNC is the best band in the land!!! Just saw them (Sept. 2022), in Asheville, NC…like I said, best band in the land every single night!!!
I saw them at the Fox Theater a couple of years before this. I think it was their first really big concert (1988 or 1989). I have seen them numerous times live, but that remains their best concert. They were totally focused and at their finest! My friends and I loved them playing "You Don't Know Me" directly followed by "Malfunction Junction" just like they did on Mystery Road (and in this concert)! Love Drivin' n' Cryin'!

@@mojodojo5533 Yeah it was, drove up from Augusta, was stationed at Ft Gordon, then saw them 2 weeks later while I was home on leave in Connecticut.

I have the "Live on Fire" EP that featured the studio version of Build A Fire and 3 tracks apparently recorded live from Six Flags Over Georgia on March 9, 1991 by Russ Fowler, Sam's Tape Truck, mixed by Geoff Workman. It includes Toy Never Played With, Wild Dog Moon and Scarred But Smarter. I wish they would have release the rest of the recordings from that concert. Surely they have the remaining tracks on tape somewhere. Thanks for putting this Athens show out there @oydave, good stuff!
thrse guys changed my perception of a power rock band in the Ivory Tusk in 89, and then I moved to ATL in 90, shoulda been at this show but was in AIM and hired gun for a pop band. Saw DNC again in Athens on the muddy baseball field and they kick ass every single time. They are the Southern Priest! Driving guitars, killer songs.... awesome
And still kicking it today! One of the finest bands to ever plug in an amp. Thanks, man!
Awesome video bro used to catch these cats down in Myrtle Beach at this place called the Afterdeck they used to play every summer been hooked ever since still catching when they come around was able to catch Kevin doing a solo show in Chapel Hill back in may be 03 one of my favorite bands to this day
What a hard rocking set, this is the year that I discovered them, it took one song and one concert for them to become my new favorite band. They are still my favorite band to this very day.

@@nolanwunderlich167 looks like a fun concert but I will not be able to make it . I had a ticket to go see them at the Caverns last time they were there but had to cancel so I gave that ticket to somebody that had been generous and had given me a ticket to see them the Fox Theater blow out a couple of years earlier. I just saw DNC put on a hell of a concert in Tifton at the barbecue and Rhythm Festival. Huge outdoor event ranks as one of my top 10 favorite DNC concert and I have seen them over 150 times since 1991. The EP release at the Star Bar in Atlanta was exceptional also, billed as no hits! My kind of show, I love deep cuts and fresh new Tunes.

They are such a force live! I am so fortunate to have seen them a couple times in the early 90s.
This is one of the very best live videos of my favorite band and the era in which I discovered them.
I wasn't at this show, but I did catch them on this tour at the GSW gym. "Follow 4 Now" were the opening act.

Don't get me wrong, I think the current lineup and all of the previous ones have been fantastic but this Drivin' n' Cryin' lineup is them in their prime in my humble opinion and my favorite lineup. High energy levels from the band and audience.
Yeah it was a great era. My favorite fourth Driver, though, was Sadler Vaden. Not a flamboyant showman but he is a fantastic guitar player and those four EP's are, I think, their best studio work. Buren will always have a big place in my heart, though.

@@cspengler No, the really changed their style for this one. No Ain't It Strange or Friend Song or With the People or House For Sale. The acoustic "cryin" side was missing - and the added the rock star clothes and smoke and lights

Thanks for posting this!! I was there. Also remember Thanksgiving 1991 at the Fox Theater was an Awesome show too. Remember Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes came out and helped sing Straight to Hell. We had front row seats. Got 5 picks that night. 🎸🤘

Hey Dave, Do you happen to know if anything ever came of the footage from the Autumn Anthology they did at the Roxy the week that Smoke was released? I clearly remember there being a film crew there every night. I've asked Kevn about it personally and he doesn't remember, ha. Thanks!
Was that the time they did a week long run, highlighting a different album each night? I don't remember the film crew but I remember getting thrown out for taping the second night by the Roxy staff and the band's manager at the time not stopping them despite the band's policy. Nice guy....
