- How to change automatic transmission fluid 2008 Hyundai Sonata 2.4 shown. Other Hyundai Sonatas and Hyundai models will be the same. The TRANSMISSION FILTER IS INTERNAL, and can not be changed. Even though the auto parts store sells the filter.

I current own a 2.4 Sonata gls with 178k miles mix 70%city-30%highway
Original transmission..
And whoever said you have to pull the transmission apart to change the transmission filter did Not know what they’re saying!
It’s not easy and yes the filter is internal but not impossible
Pull the battery out and tray
Unbolt the trans pan
And the transmission filter is located behind the pan and up towards the top..right under the transmission safety neutral switch.. whole job takes about a hour or so..
My car started whining from stop to go
And changing the filter made it stop since just a dump and fill of fluid didn’t.
I also was misinformed by many to use dexton 111 which I bought
And used and noticed a big loss in power and almost like slippage while accelerating.. PEOPLE don’t use dexton! It doesn’t have enough friction for these trans..
It uses Automatic transmission fluid SP111 only…please don’t grind your gear teeth away slowly by using low friction fluids…if you do then to save yourself and car add half bottle of Lucas trans fix..it will add the friction needed in the fluid if u can’t find the SP111 fluid
in the beginning of ownership I had a hard downshift from 2nd to 1st coming to a stop
I also noticed if I just slowed down to turn a corner and hit the gas again it was lagging in speed.
I switch it over to manual mode and noticed it would still be in 3rd gear
At 15mph and was in that gear prior to turning.
I put half a bottle of Lucas transmission fix. And drove it
And DAM what a difference!
More power and no more hard downshifts when stopping and started actually being in 2nd gear (not 3rd) when going around turns
Or trying to get back up to speed from Yeld on highway ramps.
With using the SP111 Hyundai fluid
Or Lucas it gave me the power and even my 2.4 was fun to drive around again! And I have 178k miles hwy city mix. On my trans.

Good looking thats crazy i just bought mine 2006 v6 and the tranny was downshifting a little rough. Fluid was dark and a little too much did this and its made a world of difference thanx ...

I use SP111 that’s what Hyundai recommends to use SP111 is a high friction fluid…u don’t want synthetic
Or dexton 111 you’ll slowly grind the teeth off the trans gears. That fluid doesn’t have enough friction in it!!
If u can’t find SP111
Then get Lucas transmission fix. As a friction additive and put half the bottle of 32 oz.
I did it on my 2010 2.4 triptonic automatic gls with 172k miles.
And the power I got back is astonishing and the hard downshift from 2nd to 1st when stopping went away
And mine was getting stuck in 3rd if I had to slow down and speed up (like getting on highway on-ramp)
Id b stuck in 3rd at 15mph slowly gaining speed to merge on highway unless I really pushed on gas hard it wouldn’t go into 2nd to quickly merge.
The Lucas made my car shift down/up where it needed to be…complete
Restored my power and transmission smoothed out

No, they do not.
Actually they do and you have to drop the trans to replace it.. If you don't feel like doing that, change the fluid, run it through about 500 miles, change the fluid again.
It's really just a screen, not a filter. Technically you can change this if you want to drop the pan (faced sideways) but a fluid replacement every 30k miles should suffice
mine is a 2007 2.4 liter, i assume its about the same as yours. once again how many quarts total did it take for yours?

Mine took 4.5 quarts. Measure how much fluid you take out. And start by putting that much fluid back in.
Get the car warm, go through the gears and put it in park while the car is running. Check the fluid level, on level ground.

I talked to my local Hyundai dealership today. They said the trans filter is internal, and can not be changed. Even though you can buy the trans filter from the auto parts store.

You don't need to change trany fluid? I did the same thing to my 07 sonata 2.4 and on a very slow acceleration it jumps
You absolutely need to change the transmission fluid on ANY car! Fluid degrades. Come on maaaaan
I just bought the same car, well a 2009. I have changed the oil, coolant and thermostat. The transmission is sealed, but I know about dropping the pan like you did, but there is no pan. I've seen on Toyota's that there is a gasket you need to replace as well. We got the car cheap and I was told to just leave the transmission alone. Personally, on my own car I like to drop the pan at 70k. This one I just don't know if it would mess up something. It shifts well. If it ain't broke don't fix it or should I switch out the fluid?

Triptonic automatic 5 speed trans and mines not sealed I have a dipstick on the right side towards the front on the left side of the battery
Has a yellow pull handle.
Yep, many Hyundai's have a sealed trans. You have to have a special machine to pump and pull the fluid. If you want to invest in the machine, go for it or take it to a GOOD mechanic.

Walmart has a good price for the Valvoline Max Life trans fluid. Dollar General had some on sale for $4.50 a quart.
The Crush Washer should be replaced each time the ATF is changed. Avoids dumping fresh fluid on the ground. Hyundai Dealerships are REAL GOOD at NOT changing the Crush Washer. ATF dripping on the ground. It's a 1 Dollar part. But, that's how Flat Rate Artists operate. Save 3 seconds of time.

Just an FYI. The factory change interval is 120K miles. The 2008 does NOT use synthetic fluid it uses SPIII fluid and is $8 per qt. from the dealer.
Also factory warranty is 10 years 100K miles engine and transmission. If you purchased the vehicle as certified it will still be under warranty. Good Luck.
Wow! 120k miles?! My 09 3.3 sonata has 52,000 miles but takes significantly more fluid than the 2.4. I believe slightly more than 11 quarts. I'm definitely not wanting to change it unnecessarily, but my manual suggests changing it every 30k miles so I'm probably getting close if I go with that interval.
120k miles 🤣🤣🤣🤣. Yeah if you are smart and don’t want to replace a transmission you will not listen to that shit advice
Ive never heard 120k... Always check with a HYUNDAI dealer and your owners manual. The 10 year 100k miles only applies to NEWER (like 2020s) Hyundai's...
@@cornholius YES your manual is right. I've worked on Hyundai's for YEARS. 30k miles is standard. ALL fluids need to be changed regularly.
technical manual indicate 7.8 LT ...probably you change only a half of the fluid and we need a drainage machine.
you don't flush? if not, how often do you change the fluid? and you don't need to do leveling?

The transmission filter is behind the transmission fluid pan. The trans fluid pan is facing the front of the car. I am going to do a video on changing the trans fluid filter this weekend.
